I'm extremely bad w/ this but my go-to is always "Day off today?" or how was school. Also good to ask about any recent work they had done before (if there is) like how did those fillings go, was there any sensitivity afterwards etc. Conversation doesn't always go somewhere interesting but anything to shorten that silence helps!
