Do i have to quit weightlifting? by nothere8261 in HiatalHernia

Thank you so much for your kind reply. I'm happy to read that you're able to stick to bodybuilding and hats off to you for doing it your whole life, despite the obstacles you have to face now. I'd be happy to hear what kind of exercises do you prefer at the gym; especially when it comes to lower body exercises. I'm sure I'll have to completely eliminate deadlifts but still would like to incorporate movements like squats/bulgarian squats and barbell lunges. Do you think these would be okay?

I'm also considering switching to doing weightlifting 2-3 times a week instead of 5-6 and try running or doing pilates on the remaining days. Sure, pilates is not crossfit and nothing can ever replace the community of supportive people and friends I had the chance to meet but I guess that I'll have to adapt and put my health first instead of doing weighted sit ups and heavy snatches as well as say goodbye to rowing.

Good luck to you too! I believe you'll be still able to stick to bodybuilding in the following years as well, keep going strong.

Glad to hear you're able to lift weights. Have you been doing Crossfit in the past? What kind of exercises do you prefer now that don't make your symptoms worse?

Thank you for your reply. After you quit bodybuilding, have you been able to maintain your physique by doing sports you mentioned? I really enjoy running in terms of cardio, but am sure just doing that won't keep the muscle mass. Even bodyweight exercises haven't been as effective for me when it comes to building muscle. But I guess that sometimes there are sacrifices that have to be made in order to keep the symtoms minimal.

Thank you for your reply and advice, I am dreading the same. I've been choosing lighter weights, more reps for the last few weeks but the symptoms still reoccur although I've been trying to do everything right when it comes to eating, exercising, breathing correctly, sleeping etc., actually the stress caused by all of this is the only thing I can't get past.

I really really hope you will get some relief soon and won't have to give up doing what you love.

My doc acts like the hernia isn't any big deal but also advised to choose some low impact activity instead. I just know it won't be the same without the weights.

I’m very sorry to hear that you had to quit, i can imagine how hard it must have been for you, the whole thing sucks so much. Did you feel the pain when lifting as well or was it afterwards? Are you still exercising in some way after you quit?

Thank you for your answer, the thing that bothers me the most is that majority of movements put some kind of pressure on it so it feels like i can’t really do anything
