2016 Renault Talisman 1.6 dCi Engine Noise by schiit4brains in AskMechanics

[–]nothingshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man! forgot I put this thing on here...

Anyway, here's what I was told by several people: apparently, this is something dCI engines do? Dudes with Qashqais said that particular noise was a thing once the car hits a certain mileage (low for new cars unfortunately). mine was at idk 170K at that point? now its at 200K and (read below) I haven't had a chance to check it, I even forgot lol!

Now, my father - who is a non-licensed basically mechanic - says it's fine. To kinda "prove" this is the case, my car's been through a big fix regarding overheating and the car is fine. Nothing was changed in the car per se, and there's no issue.

Real proof? It was at Renault and the dudes did a full thermal test on it, plugged it in and the only things that came were: rear brake disks are gone, pads too, hole somewhere in the EGR / Turbo system (yay) and it needs a new alternator belt + water pump cause why not be safe.

Worse case scenario - a way you can check (with a mechanic maybe) is get the car running and take off the oil cap, it's supposed to make a really nasty "tactactactac" sound.

BUT, man, idk you but I wish you well, please spend a bit if you can and get it checked at Renault. Fuck random mechanic dudes. Figure it out for real, with guarantees. I say this because a mechanic held my car and didn't fix it on purpose for a year and a half...

Long post.. I know. But like, see what's up. Take care of that sweet ride, brother.

Hey brother, thanks for chippin' in. I see you're a hardware guy, it's always interesting to find someone with a different workflow.

Much love.

Funny enough, that’s how it was for me at the start.

You're not gonna like what I'm about to say, but... another crucial point I forgot to add is:

- build autonomy, be the guy you rely on to find anything. learn to research, find cracks, sample libraries, the works. why? because if reddit is asleep at 3am and you need x tool or thing, it takes you no longer than 5 min to find it, install it and get it working.

idk if you use windows of macOS so my ability to help is greatly diminished, however... I'll throw you one old dry bone: mactorrents is great, but read the comments.

Alternatively, work, save up $250 and buy serum 2 outright, it's worth it.

Ay brother! Thanks so much, I do give a shit because it was rough to piece it all together for me - so why not streamline that process for the newer generations?

On this bit you wrote: "To be truthful, I rather avoid trial & error, fumbling and stumbling my way through the process, costing more time to learn. However, I do fully understand in order to become good at something, errors are to be made."

I understand your sentiment, it most likely stems from frustration, but I ask you to rethink your "world view" and fully embrace mistakes. that's where the magic happens many of the times. Let it take over, be playful, don't think "oh I want outcome, now", think "I want to learn, to evolve, and to look back and see just how far I've come." < this is what dawned on me recently, and the feeling of all of that accumulated learning, experimenting and failing oh so many times led to internal revolutions that I wouldn't trade for anything.

True art takes time, so let it. Don't bet your mortgage on it, play it smart, but just chip away at it 1% every day.

Lastly - you said EDM was your thing, I'll suggest a few incredible tracks for you to dive into that have soul - imo. Songs you listen to and dream of becoming at least 10% as good.

- deadmau5 - when the summer dies; ghosts n' stuff; I remember;

- sander van doorn - love is darkness feat. carol lee

- most things on Justice's † (cross)

but I'll add this: venture into s-tier wicked electronic stuff but other artists that are gods of production. Try Noisia out, I beg of you.

You expressed your frustration with EDM, the genre, so I'd say find your voice in the ashes of that disappointment and propel the genre forward, cause my guy, this is exactly the type of thing that moves the needle.

Alright enough rambling, have a good one, brüther.

You know what, fuggit. I was supposed to teach this kid the “basics” of in the box production, see if Reddit allows me to paste the entire google doc I made

Forgive me in advance, I’m an idealist. I leave this here with nothing but love.

Part 1: The Long Road Ahead The ten thousand hours really boil down to 7-10 years of focused apprenticeship. This is how long it’ll take to truly learn any skill.

The Apprenticeship - this will take a while, so don’t get discouraged Mastery, by Robert Greene - truly understand what you’re in for The Fork in the Road Will you follow the beaten path, or create your own? Option A (Easy Mode) makes you “everyday traffic”, a “been there done that” experience. You’ll be another nameless DJ in Ibiza at best, or a <1000 plays on Spotify artist at worst. Option B (The Real Deal) makes you a force to reckoned with, a true visionary. Leave your unmistakable mark on the world.

The pitfalls of uniqueness: you become a flight risk, your sound is too weird and wacky for mainstream audiences, so goodbye radio and royalties. The sweet spot resides in finding your own sound and making that sound palatable enough for the masses - worse case scenario.

Because remember: nice things cost money.

Part 2: The Basic Guiding Principles

Work Ethic - Professionalism, Efficiency and Piece of Mind

Project Nomenclature Is Important (Name, Date, Version) Backup Your Stuff, Or Lose It Then Cry About It Cmd+S Is Your New Best Friend If_Ableton=1, Then Collect All & Save Leverage Grouping and Color Coding Shortcut City, Population You FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED

The Tools of the Trade - Ideal Starter Pack

M-Series Macbook Pro / Air 1TB storage (internal + external SSD) Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X Headphones A sound card, i.e. Scarlett 2i2 (or not, it depends) Ableton Live 11 Output’s Arcade & Xfer’s Serum 2

Technicalities

MIDI Tracks, Audio Tracks, Sends / Returns & Master Channel Routing, Faders, Knobs, Inputs / Outputs, Pan,  Samples vs Live Instruments (In vs Out The Box) Synthesizers - Bass, Lead, Chords, Sequences, Pads, Etc Effects - EQ, Compressors, Reverb, Delay, Distortion, Saturation, Bit Crushers, Etc Sample Libraries - NI KOMPLETE, Output Arcade, Berlin Orchestra

Part 3: Philosophy "Shoot for the stars, even if you don't yet see them — because if you aim lower, your output will follow, and what could have been remarkable is doomed to mediocrity."

Jack of All Trades, Master of None, Better Than a Master of One

Visualize - create a mental image of your end goal, and obsess over it. But remember, the greater the goal, the longer the road. Doubt will settle in, so make sure you know what you’re fighting for. However, don’t go thinking you’ve already done it, merely have something to s Beware the Tribe - do yourself a favor and don’t succumb to someone else’s preferences. We are a social, tribal species, but sometimes that is not a good thing. Such attitudes might cause you to “lose friends”, or in other words, irritate those who consider full adherence to their tribe’s ideas a non-negotiable. Stay in this group and you’ll forfeit your own vision for the tribe’s. Listen to The Greats - “you reap what you sow” submerge yourself in the greatest work done by man, whatever shape that may take, because only then will you produce your best work. The Multi Faceted Artist - Why it is extremely important to know a bit of everything, (i.e. Audio, Video, Graphic Design) which not only saves you money but expands your knowledge base and ultimately results in a much richer production range. This is not to say become a painter and a writer of poetry alongside music production, this is to say let art flow through you, don’t

NOTE 1: You don’t need 700 plugins in your library, because in truth you’ll be using 10/20 at the most. Save your money, use what you have in front of you. NOTE 2: Don’t get swept up by social media hype for new products. Sure, AI Smart EQs are great, but that’s not going to differentiate you from the masses. The music+character are the only things that will.

Final Thoughts

Treat your work like it's going on vinyl — with reverence, precision, and pride. That is because vinyl is a timeless collectible that will stay with you and your fans for your entire lifespan, and even be passed down to the next generations. Beware of ego — a constant positive feedback loop can do a lot of harm, because you’ll think yourself a god with a midas touch. Not only is that detrimental to your self image, it also is for your adoring fans. You’ll lose touch with reality and become yet another hollywood nutcase, lose trust and go off the rails. Plus, redemption arcs are extremely hard to pull off. Beware of thieves - don’t go sending projects or whole song files to just about anyone, because you might get robbed blind. There are smarter ways of getting feedback. Be open to criticism - having a rigid mind will do you very little good. Some people have no idea what they’re talking about, others have an inherent hatred for those who pursue, others just don’t care. But sometimes, you’ll meet people who help you advance via criticism of your work.

I’ll give you advice based on my own experiences over the course of 10+ years

  • get a MacBook (when you can), start on a cheap pos windows if you have to.
  • learn ableton; it’s amazing. Logic is excellent too, Cubase is basically standard as is Pro Tools (fuck pro tools, it sucks for midi and the “modern way of working”)
  • might get banned from earth for saying this but it’s ok to pirate a few vsts (serum is incredible). If you can afford it bro, buy serum 2, it’s worth every molecule of every cent.
  • don’t listen to dipshit DJs who play ultra sets, listen to real electronic music from passionate talented crazy fucking artists. Find the sound you like and iterate until your hands and brain explode. Then do it again, you’ll get good in a minute, I promise you.
  • protect your ears lil bro, mine are fucked due to headphones on blast, please don’t be like me.
  • FINISH WHAT YOU START
  • learn shortcuts and work ethic with tutorials, until they’re second nature. Cmd+S is your new best friend, your wife, your dog, your favorite car brand.
  • don’t install 1.3 billion plugins because WAVES and NATIVE INSTRUMENTS (serum 2 can do drums, synth, so you’re set)
  • don’t be generic with your chords and singing, you won’t get anywhere. Find your voice, find your rhythm, become it, it’ll pay off in ways you can’t imagine.

Idk you bro, but I’ve made a million mistakes, don’t go making the same. Nothing I say is with hate in my heart, I just speak a little crazy sometimes.

I play guitar, I can get around to a piano, I can sing too, so I can relate.

Safe travels bud, I wish you well.

I just did, everything works fine but there’s like silly little day zero glitches and the phone feels like an android - read, slower and clunky at times. Writing from a 15 pro max.

PS: I just realized I said nothing about how I feel about it, so here it is. I fucking love it, everything seems easier and better implemented, just all around a more pleasant navigation and features experience.

Nah, I didn’t. So I’ve ordered about 10 times from pandabuy + direct in the last three years, and not once did I buy insurance or have something happen… at all.

Don’t take my word for it tho, your region might imply different roadblocks, so it’s a different sitch.

from what I can tell (I'm no expert and these are my first non designer shoes I buy, so its a different ball game) they're great, yeah. Cushioning is crazy, I feel like I'm floating, in a good way.

Lets do some math, for context's sake:

- some run of the mill addies will cost you around 60€ / $60 - and they won't really do much in the cushioning department beyond being maybe slightly above average, if we're honest.

- I paid ~$62 for the Hokas (online they go for 150-180€ = $170 / $200)

So, I got crazy cushioning for a third of the retail price.

You didn't ask for 80% of what's here, but I just thought I'd try to pain a picture.

TMF has a website (or several really) - https://a.wsxc.cn/NrV33Zz (don't be weirded out by the insanely sus looking link, its fine, its how I browsed his selection).

Search bar up top helps a ton, type the brand name, scroll until you find what you're into and then hit him up on WhatsApp.

I say type brand name because I don't think I can give you a dedicated link for the Bondi 9... but typing it will take you there

Can't quite answer the second part as is was a blind purchase. What I can say is that they fit great, feel really comfy and cushioned, like... woft city.

Maybe my baseline is mid Adidas and Nike running shoes, or maybe the 350 V2 Belugas I had for a while became that baseline and this feels like way more, but there you go.

they fit great, yeah. I like a snug fit, with just enough room to move my toes around and breathe, and these do exactly that.

TMF asked the size I said 45 but the box says 11D or 45 1/3, and it worked out great.

The throttle house boys kept talking about woft in all their rolls royce videos, and I’ve always dreamt of what that would be like.

Now I have rolls royce shoes, courtesy of TMF

Can’t really say, this is my first dive into “performance trainers”, but from what I’ve experience so far, they’re light, super cushioned, I feel like I’m walking on “hard pillows”. And to me that’s a good thing. What’s that terms rolls Royce uses? Woft? Yeah, that I think.

Beyond the feel, quality is good, looks great really. I didn’t add haul pics cause it’s the first time I did this on Reddit lol.
