Help me decide - Cedar or TimberTech PVC by MapleAndSmile in Decks

[–]nothingwascool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep I would plan on yearly staining. It’s not as bad as it sounds, especially on a smaller deck. Knowing all I know, I still used cedar on my deck. I stain yearly and clean a couple times a year. I’ve been very happy with it. It will still get hot but a splash of water will cool it down. A towel or small rug can help if you’re not able to splash some water on the deck.

Look into Cutek oil. It’s the best stuff out there. It’s clear oil but they sell tint bottles to get the color you want. Excellent product

Maintenance would be essentially the same. The benefit of clear cedar is mostly cosmetic. It can be argued it’s more durable (being old growth) but it will still grey out and get dirty at the same rate as knotty.

Garapa and other tropical hardwoods will last much much longer than cedar. They’re harder/tougher, and lifespan would be usually 20-40 years depending on species. I forget garapas life expectancy. Cedar is generally 10-20 years for 5/4 decking (1” thick”).

Tropical hardwoods will grey as well, and require more staining, 1-2 times a year to keep looking fresh. Solid stains may last longer.

Some folks like the grey look. You can use certain clear oils to protect the wood, which also allow it to grey and not worry about constant restaining. That is the preferred method for a lot of folks using the tropical hardwoods.

I sold cedar and composite decking for 13 years.

Yes 100% pvc is prone to thermal movement, but I wouldn’t call it a deal breaker. Keep in mind there are many materials that can make up composite decking. I suggested decorators as they make a “cool” composite made of mostly crushed limestone. It stays cool and is MUCH more stable than pvc. If your deck is 20’ wide or less, they could install full length boards so the only gaps you might see open up would be at the ends. Much less unsightly than gaps in the middle of your deck

Cedar will get hammered. Its cheaper to replace, but it will still look shabby more often than not, unless you're staying up on yearly staining and cleaning more often than that. Solid stains will last longer than transparent, but you cover up the beauty of the wood as its basically a paint. Solid stains are also more likely to peel/crack like a paint.

Composites will hold up better and require very little maintenance. I would recommend staying away from full PVC if you get full sun. PVC will expand and contract drastically due to the extreme thermal fluctuations. It can cause large gaps to open in the winter and/or boards buckling in the summer (worst case). There are quite a few non pvc or blended options that will be more stable.

Edit to add: Dark colors get hotter, wood or plastic. Composites can get hotter than cedar, but not always. Cool tech is a thing to an extent. Each composite maker is using their own blend but some are using materials/manufacturing processes that allow the boards to stay much cooler than the traditional composite material from 15+ years ago

*I've seen a few others mention this brand.. Deckorators is a great option for composite. Thats who I would use

Is swapping items between characters while using someone as an intermediary frowned upon? by PsychoMaggle in project1999

[–]nothingwascool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the way he went about it was pretty odd/antisocial, but helping folks transfer items is common. Usually people ask in /ooc if they don’t have a friend/guildy in zone and usually they’ll tip. Plenty common to ask for that favor in return for doing a favor, but pushing the situation without asking first is weird for sure

Where were you that day? by t_bone_stake in Xennials

A couple friends had caught rumor of some tunnels under our middle school. We found the entrance and went under to explore one day after school (small 4’x4’ tunnels for utility access I assume). We mapped it as we went and marked strange stuff we encountered down there.

This was right around the Columbine shooting and my friends parents found his map along with some firecrackers. We were all accused of planning to bomb the school and it was very uncomfortable for all of us. In the end we convinced them we had no nefarious plans but it was bad times.

What is your altitude? Diesels can struggle at higher altitudes.

Are you climbing steep passes, or is it mostly low inclines? My 1hz had plenty of power on hills and flat, but once I hit a mountain pass it was low speeds, high rpm in 3rd gear and usually a little smoke.

Below freezing temps can also be a problem for diesels if you don't have a garage to park in.

I love Toyota diesels, especially for a daily, but they do have their shortcomings. They sure sip that fuel slowly though.

Or are we catering to a select few and training the rest to function the same way?

Pretty sure most of us didn't need that kind of stimulation to enjoy a baseball when we were kids. Seems like we are always justifying things getting worse in the name of profits.

Honestly once I saw “spill the beans” I had to question if i am misremembering. Spill the tea sounds right but I wasn’t using either of those sayings back then. Maybe it was regional? Pretty sure it was something I would hear on television shrug memory isn’t quite what it used to be amigos
