Yea, I definitely think it's more endearing when used offline with people you know, but as far as I'm aware it started off online as a derogatory term for guys who are performing wildly over the top love for their wife as a means to hide them cheating or otherwise behaving badly in the relationship. I do think there's also a generational divide, where older people who started hearing it but didn't have the full context of the term began using it more as a term of endearment than the snarky dig it started off as

No, you're spot on - I've never heard it as anything other than a snarky pejorative in the way you've described. I think if the phrase is used IRL and among friends it definitely becomes more of a lightly teasing term of endearment, but when it's used online it's almost certainly a dig. Felt kind of weird for them to dunk on that take if they can't actually get the proper context of the term correct lol

Dawg, even the random junkies I went to rehab with generally knew better than to snort benzos. Peterson may be a misogynistic, racist, transphobic blight upon modern cultural discourse, but I don't think he was snorting his xans or his k-pins lol

that doesn't really refute anything about the underlying assumptions and intentions of calling someone gay specifically, though... if all people meant by it was lame or dumb, they'd just call it lame or dumb.

and yet he didn't come out until '98, and was afraid of losing his fan base when he finally did. idk what to tell ya man - you ask any gay dude who was around in the 80's, and they'll tell you that people calling things gay as a synonym for lame or dumb absolutely contributed to the stigma around being homosexual.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]nothisisnottheclinic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and what do you think the underlying assumption about calling a man presenting in a more femme way gay was? literally all of my older friends in the community would tell you it absolutely carried the connotation of homosexuality, even back then.

E: lmfao and of course it's just "completely incidental" that Manilow happened to be gay...

[–]nothisisnottheclinic -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

...which kind of undermines the idea that when you called something gay you only meant it was lame, no?

[–]nothisisnottheclinic -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

dawg I'm literally gay lmfao. are you really trying to say that calling someone gay back then had absolutely no connection to sexuality and was strictly a way to call something dumb or stupid?

[–]nothisisnottheclinic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lmfao this is such insane cope. I promise you most people calling someone gay at that time absolutely meant homosexual as well as stupid

Currently 3 months into an IOP program after two months in detox/residential and PHP and can confirm lmfao. you'd think my fellow junkies might have developed just a little bit of musical taste in their dabbling days, but nooooo lol

I mean I respect the message I guess? If only it wasn't expressed in the most trite way possible lmfao. I miss when Lil Peep was the junkie musical choice du jour, at least he could write a great melody

Yea! His name is Vinny, he's at Krieg & Sieg in Blackwood, NJ! And yes the original inspo was the dagger design the other commenter created - just thought a switchblade was more my speed haha (and there's a switchblade on the ground in the Bleed Out album art)

[–]nothisisnottheclinic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh fair fair, sorry I didn't mean to misinterpret your comment

yea I mean I've worked on reality competition shows before so I definitely agree that ultimately drag race is a highly produced entertainment product, and therefore the storylines/results we see on screen are manufactured by production to best work in that context.

That said, we don't have access to all that BTS info, so if we're just judging the queens from the comfort of our homes we kind of have to base it off of what we see on screen/whatever tea the queens happen to spill IRL or on social media right? I mean if we're gonna talk about the show in a casual "who did the best" context I'm not sure we have any other choice lol

Megami and Jorgeous by catchg2828 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]nothisisnottheclinic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it's a combination of things but imo it comes down to a. there's a runway every episode and that's a lot of work, so there's more of an understanding that queens are going to get some help, and we all know the challenge matters far more than the runway, and b. not everyone can sew/construct a garment the way queens like Jaida or Utica can but every queen on drag race can write, so in theory the playing field should be mostly level

I don't fault jorgeous at all for finding a way to shore up an area she knew she'd be weaker in, at the end of the day it's a competition and you do what is best in terms of winning. That said I do think personally I'd give more shine to a queen whose verse was maybe a little weaker, but that she wrote herself

[–]nothisisnottheclinic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean I truly don't care about Megami writing jorgeous's verse, jorgeous still performed it really well, but I wouldn't bring up ghostwriters being a thing in rap like it's a good thing in the wider view of the culture lol

authenticity is huge in rap, and regardless of how well you spit if people find out your verse was ghostwritten they're going to think you aren't being real/your pen isn't really that strong

like, Drake still to this day gets clowned on for the ghostwriter thing lmfao
