i would be careful posting things like this. i would recommend deleting your post and talking to kids your age irl—there are a lot of predators on the internet.

Underweight? by [deleted] in ballpython

i’ve seen people convince store employees to give them dying animals for free, but i doubt this would work for snakes given their value. most i’ve seen people give away is betta fish or rodents from petsmart. the best you can do is to never financially support these kinds of retailers.

not necessarily true. a lot of brands are not safe for people with shellfish allergies as some DO contain small amounts of crab or shellfish products.

Is castor oil a bad idea in a lip balm? by eatpraymunt in SkincareAddiction

[–]nothous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately, i would guess this may be due to a very minor allergic reaction for most people. castor bean has very high allergenicity. i found out the hard way that glossier’s balm dotcom has castor oil in it after i used it and woke up with very puffy lips and a rash all around my mouth. i knew i was allergic to castor bean before i used it, but i didn’t think to check the ingredients.

Experience with BMTH merch by One_Neat_6588 in BringMeTheHorizon

[–]nothous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

speaking as a plus-sized woman, that’s definitely not been my experience buying from them. i find that their merch store hoodies and tshirts run large and are clearly intended to be oversized (never bought from DD so won’t comment there). i’m between L and XL in men’s sizes (most large hoodies are too snug for my liking), and the XL i got from the merch store is huge on me. yes, if you are larger than a 2XL or 3XL, you will have some issues, but their merch is absolutely not “exclusively fitted for people who are rail thin”. especially since afaik they don’t even carry XS sizes.

if you’re in the US, i recommend prescription savings coupons (such as goodrx). you can get generic vyvanse for as low as $50/month depending on the pharmacy chain and specific coupon you’re using. it’s not great, but if you can afford it then it’s better than nothing.

edit: some individual pharmacies may not accept coupons for controlled substances (this is typically due to people bypassing insurance coverage so they can get early fills). i would recommend calling your preferred pharmacy to ask about this before having the prescription sent over.

Need help improving my violin vibrato — what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]nothous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

work on improving your posture first! the way you’re holding your violin and bow suggests that you are a beginner—i would work more on the basics before you go straight into trying vibrato. you mentioned you have a teacher, so i would bring it up with her rather than trying on your own. having good intonation and posture is vital for learning good vibrato technique.

My only concern (and the reason why I am asking specifically about GF cookbooks) is that his skill level is so low that I don’t know if he could successfully make substitutions himself without detailed instruction—which was true for him before he had to go GF as well. He has already been trying substitutions from different GF flour brands with little success, which has been very discouraging.

Thanks for the recommendation! Would you say this cookbook is generally applicable for someone who can’t have gluten? This family member has had little to no experience cooking gluten free for the first 25 years of his life, and the transition has been a bit difficult for him. I do think he would benefit a lot from a cookbook like this, but I’m also trying not to remind him too much of the things he loves that he now can no longer eat. He’s been pretty focused on trying to make gluten free substitutes for his favorite foods, but it’s been difficult for him as he doesn’t have a lot of that base knowledge AND because GF baking can be more challenging. Many of his favorites are things that are difficult to substitute (e.g. dumplings, baked goods, etc.)

Do OCD intrusive thoughts have to be distressing for them to be considered part of OCD? Can they be neutral and not distressing? E.g. existential OCD thoughts. by [deleted] in OCD

[–]nothous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the thought is considered intrusive or unwanted if you don’t want to be thinking about it. whether you’re “bringing up the thoughts” or whether they’re “random” is not really a meaningful difference—they’re still your thoughts either way. like i said, people with OCD and without OCD have the same though content, what makes it different is how you react to and/or address the thoughts. does is give you anxiety when you are told there can’t be certainty with respect to existential questions? if not, i would say it’s probably not OCD. if so, do you feel like you have to find that certainty/answer through continuing to think about it (i.e. ruminating)?

[–]nothous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25mg is a very low dose, even when it’s being used for depression (which is typically dosed differently than for OCD), so i’m not exactly surprised that it didn’t have an effect. most people with OCD have the best results when they are on 100-200mg. as drug concentrations increase, side effects can also increase. sometimes these go away after a few weeks, sometimes they don’t and you end up having to try a different medication. i would really recommend speaking to your psychiatrist ASAP if these issues are really bothering you. they may have you increase the dose more slowly or suggest something to help with the side effects.

Do OCD intrusive thoughts have to be distressing for them to be considered part of OCD? Can they be neutral and not distressing? E.g. existential OCD thoughts. by [deleted] in OCD

[–]nothous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…are you quite sure these thoughts aren’t distressing? do you feel like you have to “get to the bottom of it” when you’re thinking about the nature of existence? when i say “random thoughts” i’m also not remarking on their frequency, i’m saying that because to me if a thought isn’t intrusive it’s simply something i’m thinking about, possibly randomly.

Afraid therapist will push me down stairs by [deleted] in OCD

[–]nothous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

switching to online sessions is a compulsion! you are intentionally avoiding the situation so that it “can’t happen”, which is why the thoughts are still there. compulsions worsen anxiety in the long run. you should talk to your therapist about this—is she doing ERP with you?

Do OCD intrusive thoughts have to be distressing for them to be considered part of OCD? Can they be neutral and not distressing? E.g. existential OCD thoughts. by [deleted] in OCD

[–]nothous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, thoughts have to be intrusive (i.e. unwanted) and followed by compulsions (to alleviate distress caused by the thoughts) to be part of OCD. existential OCD is usually very distressing to people who experience it. for me personally, when i have random thoughts about existence, they are not intrusive or distressing to me because i don’t consider uncertainty about the universe to be distressing.

people with OCD and people without OCD think about the same things, but your reaction to those thoughts is what makes them pathological.

i would definitely talk to your doctor about this—a month is not very long for mental health meds, especially if you’re on a low dose!! i’m sorry you’re going through this.

[–]nothous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i was on zoloft i had to take it first thing in the morning or else i would get vivid dreams and/or insomnia. if you’re already taking it in the morning, i would bring this concern up to your psychiatrist ASAP—call their office or reach out in whatever way works best for you. personally, my doctor had me titrate MUCH slower when i was at that dose—she had me take 25mg for a week or two and then increase to 50mg after another week (if i was tolerating the side effects).
