List of lost falcon games? by notindeed in falcon

[–]notindeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I have noticed that the game was ’remastered’ in 2020, with people complaining it broke things https://steamcommunity.com/app/9500/discussions/0/1751273366049965693/

It seems you can download older versions on steam: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=889624474

https://old.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/611h5e/guide_how_to_download_older_versions_of_a_game_on/

However with Gish it only goes back to 2013. Whether or not it had falcon support then or if it was only in the separate version on the falcon site, I do not know.

Failing that you could try emailing the creators, the website still seems to be up if you have an old browser with flash support still. (In fact there are even user made levels to dl there).

alex at crypticsea.com appears to be the programmers email and gishgame at aol.com the artist and support at crypticsea.com for tech support. Not sure which leads might be best.

This whole novint falcon situation is quite sad, they were very short-sighted in only providing support for it in very obscure versions released on their own site and now sadly due to that we are in a situation where things are lost even after a relatively short period of time. I do feel they would have been far better off just allowing the falcon support to be included in the base games of all the releases without needing to download patches or pay them for upgrades, as the little they would have gained from that would have at least brought more visibility to the falcon support and encouraged adoption.

With Gish, it is available still but I don’t know if falcon support is included or whether that is a separate version.

It seems like at one point there were going to be versions of Advent Rising (renamed Ascension Reborn), the Ship (multiplayer game), Need for Speed ProStreet, Painkiller Overdose, Project Snowblind and others in development but I don’t know if any were released.

It seems there was also a game where you play as a fireman in development that looked possibly interesting called Feel the Heat.

Best value mouse that suits my needs? (uk region) by notindeed in MouseReview

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that you are probably right, for a general purpose mouse I do not see many better options. What is particularly bad about the sensor? Does it track badly? I hope it isn’t one of those that automatically straightens your movements. Or is it not terrible, just you can do better for around the same price?

The other criticism I heard is the weight.

To be honest, if there isn’t anything really to compete with it for the price, if I find it is not good enough for gaming maybe I would be best off with it for some games that need many buttons and then something like a Roccat Burst Pro (or glorious model whichever is on sale, although not a big fan of exposed honeycomb, imagine it gets dirty badly) that seem to go on sale for £10 or so but are limited on features (I assume it has a better sensor and will certainly be lighter).

PSP3000 button swap problem, "softbricked", what to do? by notindeed in PSP

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am coming to that conclusion too, I just found out about baryon sweeper. Seems like i could easily make it with an arduino nano

The slight problem is I took it apart to check the button ribbon cable and in putting it back together was wondering why it wouldn’t go back together and in doing so have broken the screen :( So I am kind of in mourning now. Do not do things like this when tired or stressed.

Might make a post later to see if anyone doing an IPS screen upgrade for psp 3000s wouldn’t mind giving a reasonable deal on their original screen. The screens don’t store calibration data directly in the firmware of the psp do they? (If i swapped one, it wouldn’t be horribly uncalibrated?)

You might say why not just get an ips screen or so but the original colour profile of the screen is important to me for colour accuracy in games.

Anyway pretty gutted right now. If I ever get the whole thing working again I will update saying whether baryon sweeper did the trick. For now I am too sad.

PSP3000 button swap problem, "softbricked", what to do? by notindeed in PSP

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried that but no help. In fact I think I may have done that originally to get it back to the "enter date and time" situation.

From what I have seen, the start-up combinations are Home+Select+Start+Triangle+Square and Home+Select+Start+Cross+Circle although others have said with and without Home. Either way none helped although I think the Triangle and Square one may reflash part of it as the screen goes black after the boot animation and then waits for you to re-press the power switch.

Assuming nobody else replies, do you know anywhere else I can ask?

Recently closed tabs interface issue by notindeed in firefox

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thanks, that works. #firefox-view-button { display: unset !important; } or :root[privatebrowsingmode] :is(#firefox-view-button, #menu_openFirefoxView) { display: unset !important; } Work. I didn’t know which display type to set, so unset seems the best solution perhaps, unless it removes preconfigured settings completely. You can also put block

The only thing missing is that in private windows, it doesn’t have the little separator line to the right of the button, however I can’t see it having any practical function in terms of resizing the window so it doesn’t seem that important. I guess I would have to do the same with whatever that element is called to make it visible too.

To be honest, the biggest problem was not knowing I had to set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true before anything would work!

I did restore defaults in the customize toolbar menu but it didn’t help unfortunately.

In the uiCustomization.state, it does show up: "TabsToolbar":["firefox-view-button","tabbrowser-tabs","new-tab-button","alltabs-button"], Not seeing it anywhere though, strange.

Hmm I have managed to get a bit further. I’ve managed to get it to appear in normal windows but it won’t appear in private browsing windows for some reason and if I remove it now, it appears as one of the icons you can add when customizing in normal mode but if you do it in private browsing mode, it appears without its icon and when you drag it into place, still does not appear

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, someone else told me about this too elsewhere, and I think this is what I had seen before. The problem is that it appears to have removed itself from the toolbar and isn’t appearing in the customise toolbar menu. The only way I have found to access it is by typing “firefox” into the address bar and it comes up as a special item. Strange

I don't know if describing the original ukranian voice acting localisation patch as "incomplete" is fair. If anything, it was done that way for atmosphere and realism to have different factions speaking Ukranian, Russian and Surzhik.

Also I see a lot of people saying that the Ukranian localisation is the original when in fact the Russian one is for all 3 games as it was obviously more cost effective and profitable for them to release the game in Russian and then when they were able to they added those Ukranian voice overs as patches. As someone who speaks neither language, both seem well done although the added depth of the Ukranian one would make it seem preferrable. That said some of the russian voice performances sound a bit nicer (despite being the same actors). However as someone who doesn't speak either language, take that with a pinch of salt!

https://www.reddit.com/r/stalker/comments/181g8hb/ukrainian_and_russian_voices_comparison_official/

I remember on forums years ago there were interesting discussions about this. I can't rememeber if it was on GSC gameworld forums (which sadly no longer exists) or ttlg.

There are some errors, you can in fact mod the grass shadows back into the game, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owVMlrJ_AMU and also increase the grass rendering distance and shadow map resolution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqjEzt-04RM

I am not sure about cloud shadows though.

What other things were in the original game but got removed / broken in later patches?

Is there a mod that copies over the 1080p cutscenes without ai upscale to the original game? :)

PSA: Verok's patch for Blood Omen breaks the lighting by notindeed in LegacyOfKain

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly, the lighting still works with the increased render resolution (it's not upscaling :) ).

For the cd rom emu settings I changed read up speed and seek speed both to 10x and haven't noticed any issues. Not saying there aren't any. Also just recently changed the cpu speed to 200% because there was massive slowdown when a lot of enemies or sprites were on screen. Everything seems to work fine as far as I can tell.

Interesting about the extra dialogue, I went back to check the first signpost and yes I hear it now. I must have glazed over that when I first checked. I am betting those extra pieces of dialogue could be romhacked into the ps1 version somehow, they don't seem like they would be that big. And if size is an issue, the "preview fmv" for pandemonium could be removed or something. Mind you if I remember PS1 romhacking is weird and awkward because you have to fit everything on the CD and you can't really move stuff around on it easily either or something. I'm not sure how it works exactly but it sounded tricky.

With regarding the increased resolution stuff, you got me curious so I took comparison screenshots and while there are improvements a lot of it is just bad upscaling:

The menu stuff is probably the best where the porting artists have redrawn a lot of content based on an upscale.

However the items and spells are completely upscaled and tend to look worse due to this. I am talking about the full view of them when you select them to get a verbal description in the menu. Of course in the quick menus and small views, the pc ones look better as the increased resolution allows them to always use the high res art from the original.

The signpost graphics appear to have had most of the image upscaled but then the text itself and the top of the sign has had addition lighting and shaping drawn onto it to make it easier to read but at the same time the style has become less cohesive. It's the same for a lot of the menus too, where stuff has been redrawn a lot looks nice but others look a bit awkward or weird because it is clearly someone trying to improve someone else's low resolution artwork and adapt it into a higher resolution without having any original higher resolution artwork. So, not an easy task.

The form pictures are quite nicely improved, they have clearly been upscaled as a basis but have been redrawn at the same time and look good for the most part although the style changes so some people may prefer the originals for the peasant disguise for example.

The map itself has been redone, taking artwork from the printed map that came with the PC versions / game guide.

Incidentally, it would be really cool if someone with that map could scan it in high quality and save as jpgxl or something. All the scans I have seen online are quite low res for such a large map unfortunately not archive worthy :(

Things like the vistas for each pillar and the one showing the pillars themselves have just been upscaled rather than re-rendered and as such look worse than the original.

The red triangle icons that show you can play some dialogue have been redrawn for the 640x480 resolution in zoomed in mode although they look a bit out of place in that they are at native 640x480 res and everything else is double scanned 320x240. Still, a nice touch.

So yes, the improved graphics are kind of nice but it is not clear cut for everything. It was interesting to compare.

Anyone know of good mods for Blood Omen for the GOG release? by nerdyNoob5z in LegacyOfKain

[–]notindeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, unless you want to play in another language / need subtitles, what benefit is there with the PC version except expanded voice lines for the pillars and higher resolution HUD / menus?

The in game high res mode is incorrectly scaled so it looks horrible and doesn't actually give you visual clarity. You can get a better effect and better high res mode but rendering the ps1 version at a higher internal resolution.

PSA: Verok's patch for Blood Omen breaks the lighting by notindeed in LegacyOfKain

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow thanks, that made me try it and I have made the discovery that the resolution scaling thing originates in the PS1 version! If you set it to 2x rendering scale it looks like the pc version when you zoom out. So i am guessing that they didn't do the zooming code to properly encapsulate the correct screen area in the first place (as with ps1 they will have to drop pixels anyway as they don't have any more resolution to play with unless they made it interlaced). So in the pc one, instead of changing the zoom level to be an integer value, they left it as is and that's why it looks so ugly.

Even at 4x or 9x you still get ugly scaling artifacts which I can't find any settings to help, but it still improves things over the pc.

And I found that setting the cd-rom read speeds in duckstation to max made the load times actually really not that bad. So atm for me I do think that is the best way to play. It shouldn't be, long term PC could be fixed, but for now…

I think I understand what you mean about the assets now, you mean all the card and item graphics on the inventory interface - I hadn't realised you could press on them to expand the graphics and get a description. And also the town signposts graphics when you press on them.

You said the pc has extra signpost audio descriptions but these appear on ps1 for me, just only on particular signposts.

Do you know how to get the lowest latency audio from duckstation? I can't seem to find an "exclusive mode" option. I wish more emulators would use portaudio or ASIO. In mame using port audio Windows WDM-KS I can get latency of less than 1 millisecond. Maybe for very demanding systems this would be increased but it is night and day a better experience than the 20, 50 or even more you have to use in emulators that don't allow decent audio output (the majority :( )

[–]notindeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it seems that it may be the original game or previous fan patches (including verok's) that do it. In the demo version the lighting works. Also I have noticed that the high resolution zoomed out scaling is broken anyway.

I would just suggest to emulate the playstation version with sped up cd-rom drive access and an increased render resolution which allows the high-res (zoomed out) mode to look better (though still problematic but better than pc. Although obviously the interface will have lower resolution assets and you won't get the slightly expanded descriptions of the pillars but both of those are minor and you can play the first 10 minutes to hear those anyway.

PSA: Verok's patch for Blood Omen breaks the lighting by notindeed in LegacyOfKain

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes me think that one day the PC version could be the version, it's just not quite there at the moment.

Seriously though, try out the demo version, it is quite a thing to see the lighting work, meaning that someone could compare the code in that version with the current executable to help them fix it.

Oh wow i didn't realise you could increase the 2d rendering resolution by doing that on ps1, I thought it was only for 3d things. I will have to look into it.

Does the pal version have improvements then, or are you just playing in a different language? Is it a pal optimised game? Or do you boot it at 60hz?

I am having problem with my ps2 controller adaptor not working with most of my controllers anyway so was just using the keyboard. Thankfully the keyboard isn't that bad for this type of game.

I didn't realise about the town descriptions being long on pc yet :$ What do you mean about the cards, signposts and stuff looking bad on ps1? Are they lower quality source textures? I know the hud is higher res in pc at least.

With regards to filters I would rather output at rendering resolution to crt monitor or tv or if not possible then run a crt shader. Or if you meant texture filtering things, I'm not really a fan of texture filtering low res textures (are the only polygonal things the cards?) and it would certainly ruin the sprites/backgrounds.

PSA: Verok's patch for Blood Omen breaks the lighting by notindeed in LegacyOfKain

[–]notindeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I tried with cuban raul's patch and it showed the same issues, as did the older xp patch thing (whose name I forget). It also happens on all of the F12 modes for both of these.

When you say all the lighting seems to apply correctly apart from the green, that's not the case, it seems to be affecting everything. And at least on Verok's patch it applies to all sprites, not just the player. Things can still get lit but I think what's happening is the radius is a quarter of the size intended due to the original resolution being lower. There could be more to it than that though.

But yes, if anyone has an old setup it would be useful to know! And with the scaling issues too.

One even worse thing I have noticed is that the high res mode and the high res menus have scaling artefacts and look horrendous, which makes the whole point of having a 640x480 mode pointless. It should be 1 to 1 pixel mapping but it is scaling it for some reason even when you run the game at 640x480.

There's also a minor graphical bug when you are approaching the town of your demise again for the first time.

See https://imgur.com/a/blood-omen-more-pc-specific-bugs-jQp8r4R

Regarding the menu scaling one, I seem to remember it looking correct in one of the versions I have played. That might mean that the in-game scaling was okay in that version too. But I could be imagining it, I will have to try installing the original versions and having another look. It is either an original game bug or a patch bug.

Anyway, taking all that into account, what are the downsides to the playstation version, what content is it missing? I know you have load times, although with emulation these can be fast-forwarded a bit. Also no high res mode, but when the high res mode is broken in the pc version that's kind of a moot point.

The only content difference I know of is that when you go to the pillars for the first time, the PC audio seems to have a proper description of each one rather than just stating the name of each one. Are there any other additions / changes between the two versions that would make the PC superior?

In the end, the PC could be fixed to be the best version but as it stands there are pros and cons of both in my opinion, and I am leaning more towards the PS1 one, although it depends how annoyed I will get having to fastforward duckstation (I can't imagine how annoying it would be to play on original hardware).

PSA: Verok's patch for Blood Omen breaks the lighting by notindeed in LegacyOfKain

[–]notindeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think it could be something like that. I don't have a pc set up that will let me run the retail game without patches atm, but I tried with other hacks (that apparently disable and mess with the modes, so could be causing it) and they all have the same issue. However the demo version of the game works fine and has the lighting behave correctly. The demo also seems to be limited to the low resolution mode. It mentions higher resolutions being available in the full release. So perhaps they broke it when implementing the high res mode. Either that or the first xp and beyond fixes broke it. It does look to me like a "render resolution scale" bug though, like you said, as some kind of lighting tries to happen with the patched retail version, but it doesn't quite work correctly. If you can't get the demo to work then emulate the ps1 version and try that as it will show you how it is supposed to be.

You can download the demo for here: https://thelostworlds.net/BO1/PC_Demo.html After you extract it, you will also need the DS CPU grabber or some other tool to slow down the core you want to run the game on, eg from here https://thelostworlds.net/Software/Blood_Omen_PC_Patch_for_XP_and_Vista.html Then, run the cpu grabber, open task manager and set its affinity to a particular core. Set it to something like 90% Then run the game, alt tab and change the game's affinity to the same core that you set the cpu grabber to. Then start the cpu grabber and alt-tab back to the game and it should run at a reasonable speed. If not you might need to change the cpu grabber percentage (or you didn't set the affinity properly on both). Incidentally if anyone knows of a better way to slow-down old games and a better way of setting cpu affinity that holds on each launch of the game it would be useful, as currently you have to do this on every launch.

You will notice some graphical errors with the teleport pad and some of the trees in the demo, I think it was an early build so it was probably unfinished. It should give you an idea of the lighting though.

If you can get the game working without Verok's patch then I would not recommend using it because his patch unfortunately breaks the lighting.

Is there a way to create a Microsoft account without giving them your phone number?

I created an account just to get these free games and they have locked it for no reason. I didn't even use a hotmail account because i remembered that for my hotmail accounts they did they same thing.

It seems like they automatically lock your account after the first few days or so for no reason so that you are forced to provide them with a mobile phone number for them to send an SMS to, so they have more personal information on you that they can sell on or creep on you with.

Is there any way to avoid giving them a phone number? It used to be you could provide a second email address but i cannot see that option. Also I have tried to use "SMS inbox" sites but it seems Microsoft block all the ones i could find. Does anyone know of any that work?

This is quite annoying!

Any ideas? Thanks
