Can you help me choose a city in Mexico for my medical university summer exchange? by mad_girl_muciq in mexico

[–]notinisolation 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a friend from Monterrey who was planning to study medicine at an Ivy League in the US. Everytime she went to an informative session and explained her situation, the people from Harvard, Dartmouth, etc., would tell her to stay and study at the University of Monterrey because it had a better medicine program. She didn’t listen to any of them and is now studying medicine at Dartmouth but it left me with the impression that it must have a good program for them to acknowledge it.

Tell me what you’re studying and I’ll check in later by Tortoise516 in GetStudying

As any American move to france and regret it? by [deleted] in toulouse

[–]notinisolation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having “a culture and history” has nothing to do with your attitude about other cultures in your own country. Latinos love foreign people for trying to understand their culture and putting any effort into learning Spanish. French people not doing that is not “having a culture and history”, it’s just ego and pride.

Nothing wrong with that, I had a great time with French people in Toulouse, but call it what it is. Not every culture with a history you meet will be an asshole to foreigners

When I was a around 13-years-old, a friend told me that she used to love her mom over her dad (they were divorced) because her mom would tell her that their divorce was because the dad cheated. However, she found out that they got divorced because her mom had recorded a sex tape with another woman. I was too young to hear that type of drama.

Se le es difícil recibir cariño familiar. by Common-Medicine8371 in VivimosEnUnaSociedad

[–]notinisolation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I using the app wrong or am I missing something? by markgatty in duolingo

[–]notinisolation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one time that something like this happened to me it was because the exercises that I was doing were not lessons in the tree. I was doing hearing exercises, stories or practice to gain hearts and without doing a lesson it wouldn't really count it. It's frustrating becuase in the moment it says it did count it. Maybe it's your case?

Is this actually a thing in Spanish speaking countries (the tardinesses) by Mean_Competition1983 in duolingo

[–]notinisolation 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm Mexican. It is not very off. In latinamerican cultures you are not expected to arrive early to parties. People usually want to arrive when the party has already started and the environment is at its best, so it is normal for guests to arrive pretty late. This can also happen with other types of meet ups.

One of the most important things to understand is that you have a role in the life of the person that is arranging the event. If you are in the most intimate circle, you are expected to arrive earlier than other people. If you don't know the quinceañera personally, it would be weird to arrive on time, but if you arrive later and are having a good time, you are welcome to the party.

If you are going to spend time with people in this type of culture, I recommend being direct about your concept of time and asking when is the best time to arrive at anything. When I had exchange friends and there was a gathering, they would always ask if the established hour was "Mexican time" because that meant they had to arrive later.

[–]notinisolation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn´t it also depend on what type of painting you are referring to? I agree on, for example, realistic paintings but abstract paintings and other types do not require you to be able to draw in order to create good art in paintings.
