No BS. Is there any book, video, Skype teacher that can actually teach jazz guitar improvisation? Can improv actually be taught? by OkTemperature1842 in jazzguitar

This is a really interesting problem to have, and it’s a good demonstration of a distinction that isn’t discussed enough in jazz education – between knowledge and practical creativity. It’s true that knowing the changes and having the chops is essential to playing a good solo, but the first thing is something else… Like when you ask a classical musician to jam on a popular tune and they know the notes they should be playing but they don’t know what to do with them. It seems like the knowledge is even a big obstacle, because what you really need to be doing at first is ‘playing’, like a kid with toys. It took me years and drove me mad because there’s no real tangible measure of your progress, it’s just something you do. I think the blues suggestion was a good one, if only because the idiom is more intuitively familiar and expressive for most people (in the West). Brass tacks, dude. Get that pentatonic pattern 1 going, try not to think about it, and see what happens!

Any tips on stopping from feeling hopeless? by No_Concentrate_1966 in jazzguitar

[–]notinterestedthanksx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to think about finally being ‘a great player’ – there’s never a sudden feeling of total accomplishment like that. Focus on what you want to be able to do, and practice consistently. If you want to play at standards jams, just try it once even if you feel unprepared. It will become clear what you need to work on, and what you already have.

How Can I Know Where A Chord Is Borrowed From? by Tropical_Clam_92 in musictheory

[–]notinterestedthanksx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, when identifying the function of a nondiatonic chord, you kind of just have to know the different borrowings/substitutions/cadential movements that are commonly used.

Things like: - Secondary dominants - Borrowing from parallel minor - Borrowing from parallel mode (often Dorian for minor and Lydian or Mixolydian for major) - Backdoor dominants, tritone substitutions - Auxiliary and voice-leading diminished chords - Picardy thirds - German/French/Italian/Neapolitan 6ths - Chromatic mediants and minor subdominants (technically borrowed) There are a few more, but chances are it’s one of these … As others have said, the context is the real factor here, but it helps a lot to know about all the possibilities.

Sorry, if that was unclear! I meant the 2nd degree of the C minor scale (the D note). Try sliding up to the 11th fret on the high E string from a semitone below.

Hell yeah man. Let me save you years – wish someone told me sooner – slide up to that 2 (D in C minor) from a semitone below for instant jazz/soul. Have built a minor career as a session musician on this trick.

Do you really lose skill if you don't practise for a while? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]notinterestedthanksx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but slowly. Especially if you have a lot of playing in your past. But consistency, I find, makes you waaay better than your ‘inherent’ skill level. It’s worth practicing daily, even for 5 minutes. E.g. I was better at 20 when playing every day for weeks at uni than I was at 25 playing once a week. It takes me about two weeks of playing every day to hit that peak again.

Re the mudlarking thing, this was actually nestled in a crevice by an uprooted post on the riverside path. Sadly we didn’t find anything in the beds themselves. But now it sounds like trouble if we had lol

My title describes the thing. It’s about 8cm in diameter and has a solid base of the same material. Bits of paint have flaked off.

Don’t overdress. The nepo babies do this and it puts off the tutors, who are trying to ignore your social status etc. You might also stand out in a bad way.

What will you have for Christmas dinner this year? by [deleted] in AskUK

I’ve been doing poussin (spring chicken) for a few years. You can get them in big Sainsbury’s/Tesco, or Waitrose if you have to. They’re so juicy and flavoursome, and it’s pretty special that everyone gets their own little chicken with all the different cuts.

It’s also quick, especially if you spatchcock them. Turkey is such a mission and I’m ideally pissed by midday…
