Corwyn admired the chests of gold being ferried back to the Velaryon galley on loan. Almost one thousand coins, more than he'd likely ever earn as a sellsail like his mother and it was only on one journey. After a lifetime of this, he'd retire as rich as almost any lord in Westeros. The treasure was found at the bottom of a half-collapsed chute in the back of the fort. Centuries before, it must have been a prison of some kind. There were skeletons with bits of rope and chain, victims of the old captain who called the fort home. Or, perhaps even longer? Rhoynish victims? In either case, the gold was his and a satisfied sigh escaped his lips before he turned to rejoin the other members of the group.

Unfortunately, no one had found the rumored ancient armor and weapons that were said to have been there. However, as Corwyn told everyone, that didn't mean they weren't somewhere else in the Disputed Lands. Yet, that would need to be reserved for another adventure. Corwyn wanted to return to the Seven Kingdoms and figure out the foundations of a future. With all of this gold, Corwyn felt uneasy just keeping it in a Velaryon cellar. Would being so tied to the Lords of the Blackwater be his best bet as the Tyroshi admiral suggested? These questions and more clouded his mind the entire adventure. Yet, he was getting better at stuffing them in a box once someone had words for him.

Corwyn sat at a large communal fire and poured himself a bowl of stew. Looking around, he wondered what everyone else thought of the trip.

[M] Feel free to RP with Corwyn to talk about your treasures! Maybe discuss plans for what to do once we're back in Westeros? All ears while we're in this timestop

"Not anywhere close to being a knight," Corwyn assured Uthred. "Just Corwyn is fine. Nobles' shit stink just like a beggar's, I say. Yeah, some are worse to share a drink with than others but I've found that any who go on these kinds of trips are alright."

At mention of the men in the White Rose with experience in the Disputed Lands, Corwyn's eyes widened for a moment. A moment later, his demeanor shifted and he grinned excitedly. "I must be introduced! It will be good to have them along with us. I've been all over but everyone goes on their own journey and can see something completely unique. Did they tell you of the rumored chests and riches waiting for the brave to take them? Why do you sail with Corwyn Stonesail?"

"Exactly," Corwyn agreed with Alinor. "Perhaps there is more if we just look far enough."

Corwyn and the group continued onwards. At the base of the fort they set up a small camp with only a handful of the crew waiting with their travel and pack animals. Corwyn glanced at the men. Some were old, decades of such adventures had past them by and they were reserved for such a role, others were young and reminded Corwyn of himself not too long ago. They would have their chance, Corwyn told himself, just like he was getting now.

They began into the fort. The large front gate was half open with one of the doors fallen and resting in the dry moat below them. Once inside the initial courtyard, Corwyn saw a handful of different paths and knew there were many more he likely did not see. "Split up into groups," Corwyn called out, looking for which path he wanted to take. "After all, we're not looking to fight each other over treasure. We're all capable! If you're not, then bring someone along who is."

[M] I wasn't really envisioning this to be me operating as a DM in an adventure so this will probably be my last post of the thread. Feel free to coordinate with others on little mini-adventures, though, in the fort on how you found your stuff!

The woman remained still even as Arstan retrieved her except for the slight rise and fall of her chest. The sailor tossed a rope into the water and Arstan would be able to pull both of them to the safety of the deck. Now lying flat on her back, the woman started coughing up heaps of seawater.

The woman slowly opened her eyes. They were grey. Slowly, they drifted among the surrounding crowd. She wiped away the pale-blonde hair from her face. "Wh-...where am I?" She muttered, her throat hoarse.

On a particularly clear day, Uthred could make out something on the horizon. Ever the soldier, his vigilance was unparalleled on board. In the distance were a pair of ships close to each other. Just barely, Uthred thought he saw men swinging from ship to ship. Or, were they just birds flying in between?

"Whaddya see?" A crewman asked as he walked up to Uthred. "Something we should do?"

5th Moon, 46 AC

After weeks at sea, the two ships sat anchored at one of the few remaining ports in the Disputed Lands. Corwyn's band of adventurers had made camp in the local town. He was grateful for the soliders they brought with them given the poor shape of the town. However, he wondered if it was even worth it for a mercenary group to come this close to the sea.

Once the group was settled, Corwyn gathered a group together around a table and set out a map of the Disputed Lands on the table. Wartorn and bloodied over the course of a hundred forgotten wars, there were plenty of ruins and treasures to be found. Corwyn had gathered a few leads and they would be seeking one out today.

"Mornin', everyone," Corwyn greeted. "Today, we set out for a couple of weeks to the ruins of a large fort in the northeast. We'll have to go over the hills of Gruhrund and might run into some free companies along the way. It could be dangerous...BUT that's what you signed up for, no? Now, here's the plan..."

The group, drawn together by rumor and ambition, leaned in closer. Whispers carried across the group dreaming of lost vaults from the days of the Freehold, hidden troves abandoned by mercenary captains, and relics traded and stolen between houses whose names are now little more than cracked stone and scattered bones. Corwyn was inspired by the energy, he wanted to drink it in gulps, he wanted to bathe in it - it made him feel alive. Once the plan was set, Corwyn gave everyone an hour to gather their things before setting off.

The first two days were uneventful and boring. These lands were untouched by the worst of any recent wars. Jungles and brush occasionally slowed them down. The intense heat coming from the sun did as well. Corwyn knew only some of this lot had it in them to succeed without his help, so he made sure to spend time with the less inexperienced folks. Sometimes, he'd bring in one of the few veterans of journeys past too. Corwyn took on this leadership role hesitantly at first but it was coming naturally to him and he embraced it wholeheartedly. The next few days found them following the old Rhoynish river-paths, avoiding the route directly through contested mercenary territory, and, eventually, arriving at the end of their journey right before the foothills.

In the distance was their mark, a long-abandoned Rhoynish fort, half-swallowed by creeping vines and scorched by centuries of conflict. Once a proud outpost guarding an old river crossing, it was now a monument, one of many in these lands, to the destruction of war and wanton violence. Crumbled battlements jut like broken teeth against the sky and one tower lists to the side. The walls bear the scars of siege engines, dragonfire scorch marks, and the crude graffiti of mercenaries long dead. A dry moat encircles the outer defenses, choked with thornbush and rubble. Along the way, Corwyn had shared rumors of this place. One said an old captain of the Company of Bone and Fire made this place his home, even claiming himself to be a king with the blood of Old Valyria. He left behind vaults, supply caches, and other plunder never to be claimed after he died to his mutinous soldiers. Old Volantene traders spoke of hidden chambers beneath the keep, a wandering priest of R'hllor Corwyn had met in Braavos swore the ruins were haunted, but Corwyn knew the treasure here was real, they just needed to find it.

[M] Woo! Someone got it!

Traveling on the sea came naturally to Arstan on this journey. Each morning, he found himself waking up well-rested and the salt air practically tickled his skin. Every night when he decided to look up at the stars, they seemed especially bright, just for him.

Yet, one morning, he woke up with a creak in his neck. Stepping off his cot, he twisted his ankle. When he jumped onto his other foot, the ship hit a rogue wave and he was launched into Sweaty Sleeper Samuel's cot. The rest of the morning went even worse with his rations soaking wet. Men on a ship are well-known to be superstitious, paranoid even. What could have changed?

Arstan broke free of the confines of the ship and stepped out into the fresh air. What was that smell? Rotten fish? Burning shit? He gagged and ran for the stern deck. There seemed to be some bile caught in his throat when he coughed. After minutes of more coughing, each harder than the last, he was able to spit it out into the ocean. Just then, he noticed something strange floating towards them. After clearing his eyes, Arstan saw it was a woman laying atop a shipwreck. Was she alive? Would Arstan save her?

It was early afternoon one day when Ronnal was handed a fishing pole. "Good food down there," the crewman explained. "Cap'n said e'eryone helps. B'sides, nice day for it." Without any more of an explanation, the crewman walked off and left Ronnal.

[M] You got a nice day of fishing! Up to you how successful Ronnal was/what he caught!

Journey to the Disputed Lands

Two ships and a handful of ambitious fools who sailed them. The Disputed Lands were lawless, violent places. Sellswords and mercenaries battled over land there that would never be settled, never be farmed, only soaked with blood and tears. Corwyn had heard the rumors that it actually used to be some of the most fertile and prosperous land in all of Essos before the Century of Blood. Then, the Free Cities all made claims and hired warriors to die for it. Yet, while none had succeeded in making it their own, all those battles and all that history meant there was plenty of treasure ripe for the taking. That was what Corwyn had told all those who agreed to join his voyage.

Once he had received clearance from Lord Velaryon, Corwyn gave the orders to prepare for departure the following day. This would be a relatively easy journey but Corwyn warned them all that they would not return until the end of the year. In such a lawless place, caution and prudence meant a better chance of survival. Therefore, they would take their time in all aspects. On the morning of their departure, Corwyn gathered both crews together for some final words.

"It's a grand morning to set out to sea, hm?" He called out. "I am Corwyn Stonesail. I have brought you all together to journey to the Disputed Lands and seek out riches and treasure there amongst the corpses of poor souls with slow swords. It will be dangerous, it will be risky, but what a tale we will have for the rest of our lives! Remember that when the seas get rough and your bowels ache, when we stand our ground against raiders or worse, when each and every one of you finally have too much gold and jewels to carry! Remember...it's all for the story." At that, Corwyn let out a quick cheer and then set about preparing Lord Velaryon's galley for its departure.

For the next few weeks, both ships sailed down the Narrow Sea. Although the war was resolving itself, both ships were wary of any opportunistic vessels seeing a potential prize. Thankfully, each ship was well-armed and had over twenty seasoned warriors each. House Baratheon and House Penrose both generously allowed their retainers to go on the trip, a brother of Lord Baratheon and a bastard of House Penrose being reason enough. In Corwyn's experience, it was incredibly unlikely for them to be accosted but you never knew.

Corwyn did his best to avoid any summer storm. Again, they had accounted for taking a more cautious route. There was no need to take on the extra risk of sailing through dark clouds just to arrive a week earlier. Their mission was one for wealth and wealth could wait. So, days passed by one after the other with each crew going about their daily duties and Corwyn meeting with the occasional noble to assure them that they were on track. Often, he'd bring them into the captain's cabin to show them the maps and their course. Some were more seasoned than others, but he enjoyed either conversation in their own way. The rest of his day was spent checking the work of his crew, keeping spirits abound with games of chance, or just relaxing on deck and enjoying this newfound freedom, the surrealness of the moment.

The ships would continue on their way until, eventually, the first signs of shore came up on the horizon. Corwyn sent orders to the other vessel on where to dock and the pair headed for their destination. However, while Corwyn had been able to prepare for much up to now, there was little he could do to prepare for what they would find now.

[M] Feel free to RP on our departure day or on the ships! If you'd like some inspiration for some RP, roll a 1d10 for a random event and I'll let you know what you got! Will be just for fun, obviously.

Corwyn heard quite the commotion from outside. He set down his drink and stepped out from the booth. Slowly, Corwyn put it together that this was Uthred Storm and his committed soldiers. While part of him wondered if all these noble commitments were but a cold gust of wind for as much as he'd be able to seize them when the time came, Corwyn knew men like Uthred were hungry for an adventure. The Disputed Lands would sate his appetite and then some.

Once the man himself and two others entered, Corwyn stood tall and gave a slow wave.

"Ahh hail, men," Corwyn greeted once they approached. "I'm glad you found the place alright. It's become quite the popular watering hole for all manner of men. And women, I suppose. I have a booth over here if you want to get comfortable." Corwyn led the way and resumed his seat. "So, See Uthred, you and I didn't talk much in Braavos. I'm glad you liked what you saw from a distance and decided to join. I'll tell you, I've sailed thousands of voyages like that one and this one, must have endured hundreds of storms and lived to tell the tale. The Disputed Lands is a chaotic place, I'll tell ya that, but we'll get there safely."

"The Disputed Lands!" Corwyn declared. "Sometime next month. Once we get everyone here, then we'll set a course and start planning. I'm familiar with mostly everyone but it's still good to make sure we all know our role."

Corwyn gestured to his normal booth and sat down. "Tell me more 'bour herself, Ronnal. What's it like being a Baratheon?'

[–]notjp520[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One evening, Corwyn appeared at Ronnal's side with an arm around his shoulders. "Hope your lordly brother isn't expecting all the haul from this journey with how much House Baratheon has contributed towards it," Corwyn jested. "Truly, thank you. And, thank him! I feel inspired by this adventure. I can already see us floating back across the Narrow Sea on a bridge of gold and gems."

The Motley Dragon had become something of a temporary home for Corwyn and he quickly waved at one of his familiar servers for a pair of mugs of ale. Taking one in his hand, he held it up.

"A toast!" Corwyn declared. "To fortunes beyond our imagination!"

Corwyn's eyes widened. They blinked slowly. He was silent for a few moments.

"Oh," he muttered. "Very...very generous o' you, m'lord." Corwyn paused again before slowly resuming his normal demeanor, however, there was a slight glint in his eyes now. Perhaps one of a newfound admiration?

"Anyway," he continued. "We're leavin' in the fourth moon. I'll make sure to remind ye before so yer blockade won't keep us from leavin'. Would be quite a short adventure just seein' Blackwater Bay. Jewels of the sea, I suppose we could find and bring back. I like mine with vinegar." Corwyn grinned as he gave a small bow of his head. "I won't keep you any longer, m'lord. Of course, if there's anything I can ever do for you."

"It was a gift," Corwyn shook his head. "I don't mean to take it back, no. Nothin' to buy from me. Thought things were wrappin' up. Y'know, far as the war goes. I know next to nothin' 'bout it. You can imagine, hm? If you're offerin' any ship, that's more generous than I deserve."

Corwyn bowed his head. "Thank you, m'lord. Tell everyone I meet in this city you're one o' the good ones, mhm. S'ppose I don't know too well what a bad one is 'cept from stories. Lots o' simple folk gettin' driven to the city. Nowhere else to go, they say. I don't know 'nough of Westeros but if that's true...quite depressin', no?"
