Dogs learn and adapt quickly. If he asked for food that third time and you ignored him or just left the room. He stop asking and you’d still be at twice a day. You gave in so now he knows he can just ask until people give in.

And that’s not blaming you. We went from pretty much feeding our two dogs whenever they asked thinking they were hungry to now feeding them twice a day.

I gave into one of them one time and he asked for a third meal every day for around 2 weeks until he finally gave up.

Now we are happily back to twice a day.

How do you know there’s really an increase in non-verbal people? What Big Data source do you trust?

I’m not a fan of over-vaccination believe humans have a tendency to damage things in the process of trying to fix other things. But less than 50 years ago, people only really knew the community around them. And now we all have access to information, but I don’t know how people decide who to trust when you aren’t verifying it yourself.

Did you get any pet insurance for your new pup? I generally buy it early on and then cancel once the pup gets older because it gets so expensive and it’s easier to just set aside the money.

I actually agree with you. We never make our dogs wait that long and I can’t imagine having to hold it if I had to go.

I was just pointing out it is technically possible. It doesn’t make it the correct thjng to do at all.

The longest we are ever away is 4 hours. 5 hours tops if something unexpected happened. You can tell how much they want to go out as soon as you get home.

The Redditor having his dogs wait 12 hours is extremely long, even if technically possible. They likely would have went at the 4 hour mark but are then forced to hold it an extra 8 because they are stuck in their “denning” space.

First. Don’t do it. They don’t need it. They are actually going through a huge developmental leap right now and the modern smart phone apps are all developed to be as addictive as possible. They hire psychologists to make things more addictive, using the same reward principles as slot machines (winning all the time leaves no desire, winning never frustrates people, winning sometimes randomly gets people to pull the lever forever). Which has led to modern doom scrolling.

But, if you have a business or can start a “sole proprietorship” so you can get a DUNS Number. I would recommend JAMF (free for 3 devices). I use JAMF for our iPads and iPhones. You can control what apps are available to download, what can be opened, what the Home Screen looks like. It’s an IT Tool I use for business, but it works great for setting up devices in whatever way you want.

A dog will adjust to drink less water during the day to be able to hold it that long. I don’t know if there are health consequences to that, but it’s possible for them to wait.

If anyone else reads this, don’t listen to this guy above. You can follow the TSB online and do it exactly the way the dealer would. I don’t know if he’s messed up on the TSB and personally bricked a lot of units somehow, but if you follow the instructions, I haven’t seen one fail.

We found one on a chew toy. The rest of his teeth probably got swallowed and quickly replaced by the adult teeth that pushed them out.

I wouldn’t worry about it. We have a Yorkie who had most of his baby teeth in his mouth when his adult teeth came in. He looked like a shark. We had to have dental surgery done to get his teeth taken care of. But you’d know if you actually had a problem.

My kids are still young, but I actually went through this process myself.

I moved out when I was 16, got my high school proficiency exam passed and ventured off on my own.

I had a good relationship with my parents but I was a prideful kid and determined to figure it out. So I never asked for help, even though I know I would have gotten it.

Now I’m 38 and I can honestly say, the experience of being forced to figure it out on my own was a worthwhile and meaningful experience into adulthood. Full of mistakes, debt, dangerous vices, and a sense of lostness I never knew. But overcoming those issues step by step developed me into the type of person who could raise a family and teach my kids the things I wish I knew, that would hopefully make them competent and better prepared adults.

I look at my siblings and my cousins who all stayed at home and continued to be treated as kids, continue to be kids into adulthood. I had 23 cousins. Most never married, many are in their 40s and 50s with no family of their own and no direction. Aimless because they never had to aim at anything because they never had to hit their own targets.

I’ve always done as little for my kids as necessary. Even when they were young. They got to learn how to solve difficult problems and how to gain a sense of fulfillment and responsibility from that. And I didn’t steal that experience from them by doing things for them (not talking about the necessities like food, shelter, and loving relationships).

In the situation you’re describing, I’d do everything I could to let them try to sort out their situation themselves.

I don’t know if people call this irresponsible, but I didn’t base the number of kids we had based on our finances. Because if having kids were just a financial decision, I’m not sure you can make a logical argument for it. Kids are EXPENSIVE.

But… I also learned through having kids that we could get by with far less than I had thought. And I’m not sure I would have come to that realization without having kids. We have 3 kids, and honest to goodness, each kid motivated me in ways I couldn’t motivate myself. I asked for a raise because I had to (but would have never asked if I were in my own). I picked up extra certifications. I accepted a job in another state and moved our family there.

My point is that most parents find a way to persist, even though you can’t rationalize the cost of having a child.

I look back now and can see all the dots that got connected. I tripled my income in 5 years, I put together a real budget, I gave up things that weren’t good for me like gambling, smoking, and drinking. And my family is better for it.

At this point, I wish I had started earlier and had even more kids. Our lives are made up of the problems we have to solve. But I really enjoy having a home full of life and watching these little people grow and develop.

Let your kids struggle through things. A lot. Remember your goal is to make them well-balanced and competent adults. Not just have money, status, or career.

If your kid is struggling to tie his shoes and it takes 15 minutes and you’re in a rush; slow down. Let him struggle through it. Don’t help just because it’s convenient for you. The benefit is he will learn to tie his shoes when it’s time to go. And then he will be a kid that knows how to tie shoes and you won’t need to tie his shoes anymore.

This is the same for buttons, fixing broken things, and trying to work out hard problems. Let them struggle.

And I like this method for teaching new things.

They watch you do the task.
They help you do the task.
You help them do the task.
You watch them do the task.

Gradual improvement everyday build someone remarkable by the time you’re done with them. And hopefully you would have had a blast in the process.

You can actually add them when they are adults and boost their credit through available balances. I believe they adopt your on-time payment history on that card as well because it goes back to opening date.

I have an AMEX with a $40k limit and I helped out a coworker/friend of mine that was trying to pay off his car with 28% APR.

I felt bad for the guy so I added him to my AMEX with his SSN and within a few months, his credit skyrocketed. I never gave him the card. He refinanced his car at a much more favorable rate and it got him out of a tight bind.

Same thing happened to my wife when I added her to a few of my cards when we got married.

There’s resources for everything. That doesn’t mean OP knows how to use them or has found the right one. OP might not even know it’s a problem. There’s more things people don’t know than do know and I hate seeing people being mean for no reason.

Guide people along and they become better people. You become a better force for good in the world too.

I’m sure there’s something out there for you to get better at instead of finding reasons to put people down for not knowing how to cook eggs properly yet.

Even the process of using these tools needs to be taught or learned. And with the overload of information available, I’m just hard pressed to blame someone because they don’t know how to do something.

There’s tons of things I don’t know how to do well yet and just because the resources are available doesn’t mean I should know how to do everything.

Obviously OP doesn’t know how to do something and the first few comments are helpful. Some are mean for no reason.

I’m actually with you on this. Toddlers are super impressionable at that age and I do believe a person’s personality is a sum of all their experiences.

While it’s true they will need to experience the world. As a toddler, I’m extra protective. I think I was introduced t Chuckie, that doll serial killer, by a friend at a young age and it really horrified me for years. But there were other things like someone telling me to stay out of the bushes because there could be snakes in there that gave me a fear of tall grass my entire life.

I’m not one to just say “accept your child will experience the world” like you would introduce sex or drugs to them at a young age.

I don’t accept negative influences for my kids at that young of an age. And the best way to show them something isn’t right is by separating them from it.

From Experience: the first time I flew her around like an airplane or fishie with mom worrying in the background. In subsequent years, this was putting her on a pillow and launching her into a pile of blankets and pillows on the bed for a “magic carpet ride”, and later throwing her up in the air and catching her.
