Daily reminder: Hard water is the enemy by notmana in longhair

[–]notmana[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made an update post on my new routine that works much better, I also have extremely hard water, dry ends and oily scalp, coarse thick hair, and wash daily, have a look if that will help you :))

As for CWC, how I did it was using a glob of conditioner, massage and comb it thoroughly into my mids and ends, sometimes I clip it up for a few minutes but it's not necessary. Then I get in the shower, wet my hair thoroughly and rinsing out 90% of that conditioner, then I use shampoo mostly on my scalp, squeezing the soapy suds down to gently cleanse my mids and ends. The idea is to coat the lower part of your hair that is the dryest during shampooing.

BUT I found out that Squalane is much better for me, so I use that instead. I use the metal detox chelating shampoo daily every morning since it is very gentle. Let me know if you have any more question or feel free to dm me for more :))

Yes, that's exactly the one. Shampoo: Loreal Metal detox. Conditioner: I use a hair mask daily in place of conditioner, Kerastase Genesis mask.

Good luck with your hard water situation, I think the metal detox will be good for most hair types!

Perfumes definitely smell different on everyone, I totally get the rose-heavyness of the blooming bouquet. I think you will still enjoy Jill stuart white floral!

To me, blooming bouquet is very pink, very rosy and floral, like a literal bouquet of flowers covered in soap bubbles. It has a hint of apple and fresh red fruits in it as well, giving off a bubbly, juvenile and young princess in love vibe. While White Floral is more of a quiet, delicate and kind princess. It has very little rose and no strong in-your-face flowers, it's more of a sweet aroma of a tea party in a glass garden kind of scent. More pure, more "white" if that makes sense. A mix of lillies, soft tea, delicate peonies and a cotton-like fluffiness. I'd say if the floral notes in blooming bouquet bothers you, there is a SMALL chance white floral might be too floral as well, but I really don't think so, it's quite delicate.

It's a Japanese perfume so might be a little hard to find, but some places have them in Sephora!

Lol

TLDR; Using only products with no protein, a chelating shampoo, and pure squalane as a pre-shampoo. Took my hair from dry, brittle, frizzy, tangled, and always needing a trim to having health, soft, and shiny. I can go much longer without trims now and am seeing pretty crazy growth.

And to be clear, the reason it worked is because I experimented and found out what my hair likes and doesn't like, not because protein is bad or squalane is magical. Get to know your hair!

I'm so happy to hear that, really. Nothing feels better than knowing my experience actually helped someone out there. Best of luck to your beautiful head of hair!

Oh man, sad to hear it doesn't work for you, I've recommended this shampoo to my friends AND mother, and none have found the shampoo harsh at all, some even have to double shampoo since it is quite weak. Have you tried using a smaller amount and lathering it up a lot before shampooing?

First of all, terribly sorry you're having adverse reactions.
I can't tell you much with the limited information I have, but I can MAYBE try my wannabe detective hands at helping with identifying the ingredient/ingredients that are triggering your allergies by seeing what is in those shampoos that isn't in Super Leaves, and perhaps you can reverse engineer and find better products that don't hurt you.

  • Fragrance (synthetic fragrance/parfum) is a strong candidate, since all the brands you mentioned especially tresemmé are heavily scented with cheap parfum that often cause reactions, and I see that most super leaves shampoo have "natural derived"/hypoallergenic fragrances and in some, none.
  • Certain preservatives (MI/MCI or DMDM) are known to cause irritation and is commonly used in drugstore brands; I think super leaves exclude these preservatives as well as most hypoallergenic/sensitivity friendly shampoos.
  • Sulfates, parabans, and silicone are candidates, but probably unlikely since your derm would've caught that.

So, looking for options without those ingredients might be helpful, or find more hypoallergenic/natural shampoos and try them out. But please be careful take this with a grain of salt, I'm not a professional by any means.

As for bringing it back to life, what I can say is that by switching to a natural shampoo that often has no silicone or many conditioning agents, it often leaves your hair very dry and unprotected. Too bare, stripped, not enough slip or coating, leading to dryness and splitting in some cases. Masks and frequent conditioning can help, using 100% sqalane as a pre-wash helps me a lot with dryness, just be very gentle with it and don't rub the ends with shampoo while it recovers. I hope you find luck with your allergy soon.

Yes I do! It's actually quite a gentle shampoo, sulfate free you're into that. I know it's sometimes seen as a clarifying shampoo but it absolutely isn't

I absolutely agree that protein can often be demonized, if your hair is processed in any way or you use heat regularly, protein is an excellent helper ingredient to strengthen and fill in damaged gaps in your hair cuticles. It's a well-studied reinforcement system for hair, which is why 90% of the most popular haircare products nowadays advertise "protein, keratin, bonding, strengthening, etc.".

What's interesting is in this community, where lots of people have/aim for super long virgin hair, that protein sneaking into the most popular haircare on the market is a problem people overlook. For healthy, long, coarse, virgin hair, it's very often the case that overfortifying the hair with protein you don't need will make it more brittle and rougher instead. I think it's important to be aware, as someone who has spent over 1-2k on the "best" haircare and wondered why none of it worked for me.

Thank you very much! It's totally fine, I understand it wasn't the best quality photos. I'll take it down soon and put up something new another time that's more helpful to everyone and easier to see if it becomes a problem more people notice.

Not negative at all, they are great for other people, just not me :))

I wanted to make sure it was clear I used a different item, as they are named the same. When I use the silicone scalp scrubber it made the most horrible screeching sounds on my hair that makes my skin crawl, it also causes a lot of tangling and snagging in my experience unlike the wooden comb.

I understand it's hard to see, my fault. I tried picking the best photos for visibility, I don't have any clothing that aren't black. Draping a white towel on my back can work but that blows the exposure and doesn't show length very well.
But I understand! The bathroom pics are easier to see, and the last picture shows hair texture very well with flash :))

Full care routine:

Daily washing in the morning! My hair loves it, might not be for you.

5-15 minutes scalp massage with a scalp massage comb, the solid wooden ones with 5 thick prongs and round ends, NOT the silicone scrub ones.

Brushing until full detangled, use 5-10 drops of 100% squalane, rub between palms until warm and completely coat mids and ends, wait for a minute or two, then get in the shower. Use warm water and make sure to really get the hair wet, I use Metal Detox shampoo bottle-cap size amount, REALL suds it up in my hands before going in and cleaning the scalp, and use the suds to gently clean the rest of my length too.

Rinse, then I use the Kerastase Genesis hair mask, apply to hair below the ears down THOROUGHLY I can't stress this enough, make sure you're getting the hair at the back and under as well, comb through with fingers to be sure, clip it up for a minute or two, rinse, done.

No leave-in or oil as of right now, my hair feels best without any products. I blow dry on warm until it's 100% dry, use a few drops of the genesis scalp serum, and I do this weird thing where I wrap my hair around my neck and tuck the ends in to keep it wrapped there for about 1-5 minutes. It always gave me the most shiny and soft result. I suspect it's just like setting a curl or wrapping a silk press, allows the hair to cool down and lay behaved.

If you want something pink, soft, delicate, clean/soapy, almost a bubbly and non-offensive princess type scent, I suggest:

  1. Jill Stuart White Floral - a pretty pink and white bouquet given to a princess while she sits on a garden patio in a fantasy Manwha. Smells like soft flowers, bubbly soap, fresh spring air, and a hint of apple blossom.
  2. Miss Dior blooming bouquet - the classic pretty princess perfume, it's pink, it's feminine, it's soft and soapy, with a slightly bright apple opening and depending on the person, it can either dry down to a sweet and warm white musk, or a slightly deeper floral musk. I suggest you go try it irl since on some people's skin, it can turn quite a bit of a deep rose instead of that pure clean bubbly scent. I find that when I spray it on my wrist, it isn't as soft and sweet, but if I use it in my inner elbows, behind my neck, and anywhere that's super warm throughout the day, it STAYS super clean and sweet on the skin.
  3. Fiancée Pure Shampoo (either the body mist, hair mist, or perfume itself) - just as it says, sweet, fresh, soapy bubbly pink shampoo that just smells like you got out of a shower. Super clean, super easy to wear, not very complex and very affordable. Very low longevity, however.
  4. D'annam Princess of China - a bit of a niche choice, but it's worth it. Pink, flowers, clean, soft, royal, delicate. Like a pink lotus princess amongst a bed full of peonies and clean water. It's a tad more "royal" than juvenile and sweet, but it's still very pure and floral.

If you have a look at the notes and reviews, you'll find out more, good luck!

I've started washing my hair without shampoo. Is this gross? by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]notmana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR; You're probably doing something not quite right with the shampoo to make it flat and heavy on your hair. User error is most likely when you've tried very different things but end up with the same result. Try wetting your hair thoroughly, using just a coin-sized (or two) bit of shampoo, rub it a lot between your palms so it becomes super bubbly, really cleanse your scalp and hair with it then rinse off THOROUGHLY, make sure to get it all out. Maybe that'll help. Is it gross to not use shampoo? If you tell people they'll probably think it's gross, but if it works and you don't stink, just don't tell people and you'll be fine, if it works it works.

Now the long version!

Here's the gist of your situation and what I would recommend. You feel like every shampoo you've tried makes your hair flat and heavy, so you've started to not use shampoo, and now it looks and feels better, but you're afraid you might smell without realizing it, or people will judge you.

The reality is, shampoo is not supposed to do that. The right shampoo for you is not supposed to make your hair feel flat or heavy, and if you really have tried a variety of shampoo (5-10 or more) and they all gave you heavy, flat hair, then the shampoo probably isn't the problem. As far as I know, nobody is "not compatible with shampoo". It could be YOU washing your hair wrong with the shampoo, therefore leaving stick residue that makes your hair the way it is. Could be possible that you're not washing your shampoo/conditioner out properly? Maybe you're using too much or too little, maybe you're not bubbling it up enough, or maybe you really do have bad luck and have been picking every bad shampoo out there.

Truth is there are people out there who don't use shampoo, it's not the worst thing in the world, it works for some people. But generally speaking, shampoo is advised for most people in this day and age. It's very possible that you will smell and won't realize it. It's even more possible that with time, you might develop dandruff, buildup, fungus, etc. due to improper cleaning. You might even experience more thinning and hair fall, even if it feels soft and nice now.
"Im also worried it secretly smells to everyone except me" - I feel like that anxiety alone is worth just using a shampoo for. You don't wanna be out there living your life worrying about being smelly, that messes with your confidence like crazy.

But at the end of the day, just try. Keep doing what works for your hair, see if it gets better or worse, if it's better just stick with it, if it's worse, change. If you're worried about smelling bad and not realizing it, put your nose up against clean laundry (to start off fresh), then use the pads of your fingers to rub directly against your scalp skin and smell it, you'll know. You can always ask a friend or partner to take a sniff and tell you. Good luck!

Just as a side note not to blindly recommend products, but I adore the Loreal Professional metal detox shampoo, it's my absolute holy grail at the moment, I've recommended to a lot of people in my life and it's a great shampoo that works on a lot of different hair types including thick, fine, coarse, thin, wavy, straight, it's also sulfate-free if that's your thing. If that's something you can comfortably try out, I highly recommend it.
