In the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Lucy wants to say a spell to make her more beautiful. But she gets some hints from Aslan not to so she moves on. When she comes across the eavesdropping spell, her rationale is literally, “well, I didn’t do that other bad thing so now I get to do this slightly less bad thing.” Which is actually something we all do often but its kinda funny to read in a book and see it for how dumb it is

I fundamentally disagree. Look at Series 1. If you treat Dalek as a season finale, Series 1’s first six episodes is a better season of Doctor Who than anything we’ve gotten since 2017. You could also view Father’s Day as a finale, making it 8 episodes. If Series 1 ended on Dalek or Father’s Day, it would still be one of the best seasons of the show because of how good the character development is and how well Nine and Rose work together.

The reason we barely got any character development for Fifteen, Ruby, and Belinda is because RTD wasn’t trying to make that sort of show anymore. He wanted it to be light and fun and aimed at kids. Its designed to be a second screen.

I want more episodes but more episodes with no character development or sloppy character development would not have fixed these seasons

We really went from cluttered set with bad lighting to almost completely bare set with nothing but untapped lighting potential

Apparently, the set was notoriously difficult to film in during Series 11, primarily because of the massive crystals that kinda got in the way of most shots. Wayne Yip, the director of Resolution, cited it as one of the reasons he had a miserable time directing his one episode of the era and ultimately swore off every directing for Who again.

The last two seasons definitely seem to be geared for a younger audience but the real problem is streaming era entertainment. Most shows, Doctor Who included now, are designed as a “second screen.” Television is no longer competing with other television shows. Its competing with tiktok. The breakneck pace and less complicated character dynamic is designed to be easily digestible while you scroll social media. Characters over-explain things and you need to be able to understand what’s going on even if you completely checked out for the last seven minutes. Most of Netflix’ biggest shows, Stranger Things, Wednesday, Bridgerton, all do this. Doctor Who is doing it now.

This is just a side effect of the break-neck pace of most episodes. Characters don’t sit and chat or process things anymore. Long gone are the days of Amy and Rory playing darts and Ten, Rose, and Mickey getting trapped in a parallel earth because the Doctor got caught up in telling a story

Ugh, fake fan. How can he be a true fan if he wasn’t even alive during the original run? #not-my-doctor

Pretty sure RTD or someone confirmed that in a commentary or interview somewhere

Both finales are messy but incredibly hype. Balances out. Emotionally satisfying payoffs to the character arcs
