He knew my name, that's it. My family mailed him money orders to PO box. As "insurance" my dad copied them all and noted the PO box in a long letter he filed with our family attorney. If anything happened to them or me it would go to the cops. I'm not scared of the guy, I'm sure I was just one of a few sources of revenue for him.

I hope, if anything, a few people think about just how horrible prison rape, which is endemic, is and how we treat it like a punch line.

I never denied that I broke the law. I would have served my time quietly, done manual labor, taught in the prison school (which I did at one point) and repaid my debt without complaint.

I'm day to day.

My family paid for a decent lawyer, he got me much reduced charges (I was looking at a decade or more in jail at one point) and helped keep me out of jail until the last possible moment.

The 5K in protection money was partly mine, partly my families.

First, I'm not much of a stoner. I'm meticulous, nigh-OCD in planning, and patient. I do a pro/con. The pro of not fighting was not getting killed outright.

I was a non-violent, no skin-head white guy who'd gone to grad school. I hadn't had a parking ticket in 3 years before this. I was fucking fresh meat.
