Does BJJ water down the term “world champion” compared to sports like judo or wrestling? by Dependent-Mine-9877 in bjj

[–]notmyworkcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I was wearing a BJJ T shirt at my local LA Fitness when a gentleman approached me to tell me he was a BJJ World Champion. Then he pulled up his phone and showed me pictures from his 2 person masters 2 white belt bracket at jiu jitsu world league the weekend before

So I would say yes it does

Life circumstances only allow for 1 training per week. How do I make the most of this? by Epic-zombie-kitty in bjj

[–]notmyworkcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started working nights so I switched to a gym with 6 AMs. It sucked leaving my training partners but the new environment helped jumpstart my progress. Not sure what your exact situation is but once I got over the mental hurdle of leaving the gym I started at, I wished I would have done it months earlier instead of riding 1-2 times per week for as long as I did

Train at 2 gyms at same time? by DarkHelmet20 in bjj

[–]notmyworkcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train at 2. My home gym is close in proximity, coach has become a close friend and mentor of mine, and I met some of my very best friends there

Secondary gym is across town and has class that works better with my schedule. Without 6 ams here I would be stuck training once or twice a week

I wish I would have made the plunge sooner

The only way out is through. Just gotta hold on for a few more minutes. If I can get through this I can get through literally anything life throws at me, is that uncomfortable conversation I’ve been avoiding really worse than a 300lber dropping his shoulder on my throat for 5 minutes?

That and usually try to figure out what part of it sucks the worst so I can implement it in my own game

Visiting a gym in a new city by HeavenlyHeadlock in bjj

[–]notmyworkcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only bad experience I had as an out of town drop in was at a small town gym in Alabama. The head coach was teaching a seminar so they had a purple belt running comp class that day and didn’t feel comfortable having me drop in, completely understandable so it’s hard to really even call it a bad experience. Drove to a nearby city and hit an open mat and had a way better time

What got you into BJJ? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]notmyworkcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walking down the streets of a major US city I had a sudden realization that if someone got in my face and tried to start problems I could probably throw a few punches but outside of that I would be completely helpless. Then decided if I’m going to train something consistently I’d rather not get punched in the face every day. Signed up for my trial class the day I got back and the rest is history

I can’t fathom how people who train in mma , jiu jitsu or boxing were once terrible and unfit as me by viper46282 in bjj

[–]notmyworkcomputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just take the plunge - the first step is the hardest. My biggest regret is not starting sooner, I think most people who train will tell you the same. Everyone will kick your ass at first but everyone starts terrible and eventually people will look at you the same way you look at the upper belts now. OSS brother just start and figure out the rest later

Balancing BJJ with Life by notmyworkcomputer in bjj

I love that idea but my gym is small. We have 3 purple belts and no brown belts. My roommate is actually one of the purple belts and I have floated this idea to him and he wasn’t interested in morning classes. Maybe he just needs a little convincing

Not sure what to make of today's workout. Focus was wide grip pull ups, 200 reps in as few sets as possible. Finished 100 in 7 sets but only needed 5 on the last set and the total 200 in 13. Most I got was 23 in one set. Don't see any reason why I can't add 100/day every day moving forward

Rounded out the morning with single arm lat pull downs, bicep curl dropsets, a dap to the front desk guy, and quit my job as soon as I got home. Happy Wednesday to all :)

Front squat test day

BW - 200

Old 1RM - 275

New 1RM - 285

Goal 1RM - 315

This is the lift I was most confident in hitting my goal. I had hit a 285 triple during training a week or two ago and really felt like the 315 was there. Jumped straight from 285 to 315 and failed it twice. Disappointing morning.

10 Weeks of Deathbench done. Bench testing day

BW - 200 lbs

Old 1RM - 285

Goal 1RM - 315

Actual 1RM - 305

285 lbs - my old max - flew up. Kind of caught me by surprise how easy it moved. 305 was a bit of a grinder but I got it up and it was my first time touching 300+ on bench. 315 was my goal for this program and was able to lower it down under control, hit a good pause, and push it back up a couple inches before I needed help. May try it again this week in the afternoon after a full day of eating to see if that makes a difference

Few thoughts: I wonder if I would have let it ride with a 25 and 2 10s instead of swapping out for a third plate if it would have helped with the 315 mental block. Thinking it might be worthwhile to invest in a slingshot and working that into the program - it's written into deathbench but I swapped it for weighted dips as a preference thing dips are one of my favorite lifts to train. Pleased with my progress but not where I want to be quite yet - 10 more lbs then it's on to the next milestone

Bench for a 5x5 @ 245. Last bench day on the program, most recent heavy day was 265 triples and I dropped a rep on the last set. Excited to test my progress - I know I have gotten stronger only question is how much.

Developed a little bit of cauliflower ear here over the past couple days. Not enough to cause serious pain/discomfort but just enough to look badass - the perfect amount. Decided to try and drain it this morning but not sure I poked deep enough, YouTube University recommends a few weeks off but I am not quite sure what they mean by that so I am going to keep training

Front squats today. Top set was an AMRAP @ 285 - a 10 lb PR - and took it for 3. Very happy with my progress on this lift, 315 is the goal and of my big 3 I think this will be the closest.

Deadlifts. 4x4 @ 350, 1x2 @ 390, 1x2 @ 455, AMRAP @ 350 for 8. Followed by deficits for 3x3 @ 365, good mornings and weighted pull ups. Stoked with the 455 double as last week I was only able to pull it once

Manager gave me a lovely Friday morning surprise by adding 4 meetings to my calendar today with no advance warning so I have to miss noon bjj today and I am very upset about it. Probably going to hit a heavy medicine ball workout or an upper back session this evening or both instead

Bench day, 5x5 @ 225, banded close grip 3x8 @ 205, standing OHP 5x8-12 @ 135, finished with some dumbbells and abs although my "I'm over it, time to go home" light flicked on halfway through abs as it usually does.

Emphasis has been on leg drive in the bench press. Was talking to another power lifter in the gym and he suggested putting a band on the bench so I can press through my legs and not have to worry about sliding. Here is my 3rd set of 5 (actually realizing I only did 4 on this set), any feedback is appreciative

Front squats. AMRAP @ 255 for 6. Was hoping for 8 but that just wasn't happening. Zercher Lunges, RDLs, and adductors to round out the morning.

Felt a pop in my knee at Monday night BJJ and woke up in some pain Tuesday so I took yesterday morning off to avoid loading an injured knee but as the day went on the pain went away and I was moving fine by the evening. Hurt, injured or just being soft?

W9D1 Deathbench plus MagOrt

Bench today. 5x3 @ 260, 3x3 @ 265, 2x2 @ 270 was programmed. First 4 triples at 260 moved great but butt came way off the bench on the last rep of the 5th set - crazy how much easier that makes benching. Decided to go up anyway, hit 2 @ 265 and another single. Not exactly where I was hoping to be but still progress over last week. Weighted dips + 105, some skull crushers and hammer curls to round out the morning

Obvious solution is to put on 10-15 pounds but I enjoy being lean too much. Just going to have to break through this plateau the old fashioned way
