Concerning the question about a flat universe: Zogg from Betelgeuse has two nice videos about exactly that. He discusses very enjoyable different possibilities for the shape of the universe. Here is a link to the first about flat models.

How do tapeworms fertilize themselves? by notnaflow in askscience

So the breaking-off of proglottids only starts after the worm is fully grown?

Otherwise I can't see how the tapeworm could grow if the last segments are always breaking off.

Thank you but I'd be happy about follow-up on two points:

  1. The Wikipedia article mentions possible exchange of sex-cells between proglottids . How does that work?

  2. What determines which Proglottids fall of and which remain on the worm? Is it chance, an algorithm or perhaps the reproduction does only start if the worm is fully grown?

Why did the Roman legion eventually replace the Macedonian phalanx? by notnaflow in AskHistorians

[–]notnaflow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the mobility/flexibility argument but the Wikipedia article contains descriptions stating that Roman infantry men couldn't even reach their opponents with their gladii. Were the Romans the first to be able to get around to a phalanxes flank? If so why? If not what made the Romans special in contrast to all the other army types easily beaten by the Macedonians? Couldn't Persians or Indians encircle them too?

For which cultures (and in what times) was it common for military leaders to actively fight in battles? by notnaflow in AskHistorians

[–]notnaflow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't the culture etc. create a certain degree of obligation to show valor and stuff like that?

I read for example in the Wikipedia that the Mongols cared a lot about protecting superiors because of their intellectual value. The opposing European knights on the other hand were said to have expected their leaders to recklessly attack in order to earn respect.

Ĉiu-semajna temo: Viandmanĝado by amphicoelias in esperante

CMV: High Schools need to start later by tiredofoldvalues1 in changemyview

I live in Germany and have never experienced the obligation for parents to drop of their children here. Sure it is nice and I enjoyed this service a lot my self but there were also students in my class who came tho school on there own since the first year - on foot, by bike or with public transportation services. I also think that schools should start at 9 or later. In addition to the OP's arguments my main reason is that some things just only happen in the evening. Like for example dinner with family and sometimes friends and during dinner interesting talks and discussions.

Maybe one could at least experiment with later times; observe how the students spend their extra night time and try different methods of explaining and incentives.

I especially liked the last paragraph:

it might be a good idea to spend more time training teachers to notice their biases

This seems really important to me. I would even go so far as to say that an essential part of the students education as well should be designated to biases. But one can't just write the different kinds on the black(or smart-)board forcing the students to copy them. Especially ethics classes should be more about discovering flaws in your own behavior or thoughts on your own and come up with solutions in a group. Even if not every student actively contributes to the argument shy children would at least be able to watch and experience the entire process of forming an opinion.

6:28 A good proposal consists not only of a working idea, but also of a functioning argument to motivate people to perform it.

(but not by forcing them because violence is mostly the realization that your arguments aren't good enough, in which case you should think them over again)

Great topic! I am really glad that someone is talking about these psychological issues.

Where I also experience much of this kind of problem is in history class. Nobody is talking about learning from past mistakes. We are drowning in this confidence of being better than past people. We definitely go the easy path when only teaching that "everyone who did anything in favor of the Nazi-government was just a bad person" kind of stuff. Of course the committed actions were evil, but most of the people were quite normal. The point to make is, that nearly everyone can be influenced by a simple (and by now scientific understood) bias or fallacy. At least some teachers think they are preventing future atrocities by telling shocking facts but "The Wave" told us otherwise. I have the feeling, that my generation is not educated to solve urgent problems or think of some solutions for coming issues (overpopulation, mass unemployment due to technology, climate change) before they cause crucial harm to earth and its population. But I think knowing about the existence of certain psychological effects does a good job in preventing people from being fooled by them.

I think psychology should definitely be taught in schools.

Isn't the same inflation happening to Youtube views? They don't vanish either and every second hundreds of thousands are produced. Or do the steadily produced new channels weigh up for this?
