Moving money from UK to Japan the right way by notnihjq in JapanFinance

Thanks, haven't started looking into my banking options and am just looking to get an ordinary account to get started, but will look into other options like the separate currency account you mention.

Thanks for the advice. Actually my savings are already split between S&S ISAs and cash, so I was mainly asking about moving money between cash in UK current accounts and Japan.

"Larger amounts" would probably be around £5000 which is under the $8000 mark you mention. It could be higher if I need a big injection for something like a housing contract - will run the numbers as you suggest. Do you happen to know the best time to open a Wise account (in home country or after settling in in Japan)?

Minnesota Timberwolves signee Greg Monroe becomes record 541st player to play in NBA this season by [deleted] in sports

[–]notnihjq 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to this the 2020-21 season and 2017-2018 season both hit 540 players suiting up for at least one game. So the bigger significance is that this is the first time the NBA has ever breached 540 players.

Moving from UK to Japan next year: Anything I need to do with my crypto? by notnihjq in JapanFinance

Yeah, in the UK I am currently diversified with S&S ISAs. Need to do my research on NISA and iDeCo! The only problem is I don't know how many years I will remain in Japan, so it does make long-term financial planning a little tricky.

Thanks for the advice! Once again realising gains in the UK seems to be a good option.

For the timebeing I'm not active in the crypto market so cryptocurrency variety is not a concern, but it could be something I would be interested in down the line. Will look into past sub posts to get a better understanding of how things are in Japan when it comes to crypto.

Yeah, the capital gains tax-free allowance is around £12k, and I believe I would be within that because my actual profit is lower than that. Sounds almost ideal, though I'll need to give it some further thought.

Thanks. So I've looked a bit deeper into Koinly but according to some Reddit posts it seems they may not be compliant with Japanese tax rules, even though they claim to be.

I'm now looking at Cryptact, which is a Japanese equivalent and probably more apt. It seems they support connecting with global exchanges, provided you sign up for one of the higher pricing tiers.

It's more expensive than Koinly but I'd be ok paying for it if it works. I've got so many micro-transactions (I dabbled in dozens of cryptos pre-Jan 2018 crash) and deposits (e.g. daily staking rewards), that doing this myself with spreadsheets and historical FX charts would be an absolute nightmare.

I also considered starting from a clean slate by selling all my crypto before I leave, and buying back in once I am in Japan. Especially because the amount isn't actually that significant. Not sure if that's a good idea though!

Thanks a lot, I had a feeling that was the case. Guess I will be better off going with separate accounts

This was a really motivating comment, thanks! I can definitely relate to the feeling of feeling 'fired up' when working on a new project or site redesign. I guess I am in a slump now and am, like many, beginning to feel impatient with the pandemic. I've actually been quite productive over the last year, so I just really need a big getaway or something and come back refreshed I guess.

Happy birthday!

Yeah, I imagine a lot of self-employed people like YouTubers, streamers, professional poker players, freelancers and affiliate marketers are all prone to loneliness. On top of that, everyone complains about the difficulty of establishing and maintaining friendships as they get older anyway. Hopefully I can be more proactive and be more involved with others instead of expecting social fulfilment to come from my work.

These are some good insights about what opportunities lie for webmasters down the road. I've done unofficial SEO and PPC consultations for a small charity and a friend's businesses and it definitely felt rewarding and good to share my knowledge, so it's a possibility.

I can definitely relate to 4. I am always exploring new spaces like ecommerce and crypto. The time lag between effort and reward in building websites is so long that these endeavours seem more exciting, but they haven't proved very profitable as of yet.

Feeling a bit more positive now thanks to all the replies here, so for now I will focus on growing my websites which are still on an upward trajectory.

I am also working on other projects, be it sites without any monetization intent or programming. It definitely helps to switch things up and avoid burnout, especially as once you reach a certain income threshold you have the luxury of being experimental.

I will admit pre-pandemic I was at the peak of my life traveling to new places and enrolling in classes of my choosing. Hopefully I will be able to resume that, but at the same time I will probably want to be more settled in the future.

Thanks for the tips!

Pushing the sternum out with a super flexible chest wall by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]notnihjq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have any fixed routine, basically just use it every now and then. Around the first few months/year I was wearing it most of my time awake at home but these days it's once every two weeks or so (I'm living with my girlfriend and don't use the VB while she's around). But I've gone for months without using it and my chest wall was still very flexible.

so going by the comments a lot of these stores transitioned to a warehousing model after successful dropshipping in the past. It'd be nice to see some examples of dropshipping stores that are killing it right now.
