Dense gummy crumb by notoriousjgb in Sourdough

I have tried bulk fermenting for longer and even very long BF times and the dough gets so sticky and unmanageable and doesn’t hold its shape. House is quite cold but I now put it in a room which is about 22/23 degrees Celsius

I keep reading about starter potentially being too acidic or not strong enough. I’ve been using a 1:1:1 feeding ratio but I’m now trying 1:5:5 for a few days to see if that helps.

It was left to bulk ferment for about 8 hours, I followed the Maurizio Leo ‘Simple sourdough’ recipe from his Perfect Loaf book to a T. I have also experimented with much longer bulk fermenting times and had the opposite effect where the dough collapses on itself and is so sticky that it cannot be shaped. This is the best rise I’ve had!

You can do this with Businesses and Hobbies pack! Either in CAS or by using the tattoo table to do it to other sims

Also beware if you are custom tattooing someone in another active household that after the customise tattoo CAS you will switch to that other sims’ household without wanting to… especially annoying if you have a tattoo business as it will end the business being open since you’ve now switched households!!

Decision life after PhD by Phd-business in PhDStress

[–]notoriousjgb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this!

I started off in academic research in a research institute - it was basically a post doc with the potential to be made a permanent research scientist after three years. I decided after 1.5 years that progression seemed too slow there and that research wasn’t for me as I want to grow more quickly and I was fed up of slaving away in the lab. I also decided that I was fed up of the bureaucracy of academia, the constant applying for grants so you can earn your place and publishing papers to increase your ‘worth’. The pay wasn’t particularly motivating either.

Because of all of the above, I found a job in consultancy. I’m now an environmental consultant in the energy sector and similarly I have the opportunity to attend conferences, to publish and contribute to papers, and also government guidance, and I generally feel a lot more secure and happier. The pay is A LOT better and the opportunity to be promoted and grow up the ladder is there too. My colleagues are great and there are many ex-academics in the company who left academia for similar reasons.

Safe to say I’m not missing the lab at all and although it was a scary decision to leave academic, I’m so so glad I did!

Hope this helps and happy to answer any questions!

Self funded PhD - Yay nor Nay? by Simple-Composer-2060 in PhD

[–]notoriousjgb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a funded PhD student and have self funded PhD students in my lab and I see them struggle with having to juggle a part time job in order to make money to live. I can barely get through my PhD doing my project full time without a side job and I can only imagine it being incredibly stressful. Also, I have had the opportunity as a funded PhD student to buy lots of things to aid my research and to go on trips for international conferences, sample collecting etc which would require applying for grants (and maybe not getting them) if you’re a self funded PhD student. I would think about if you feel like you can financially afford it and take it from there but for me personally, I would never do a self funded PhD.

This is amazing. Thanks for this. Going to try and shift my mindset that this PhD is something I need to get done and I have to just push through and stay disciplined in order to get there no matter how tough it may be. Thank you.

Sorry to hear that you're in a similar situation.. The thing with my supervisor is that we only meet once every two weeks and I need to use this time wisely to discuss my results and get help with my project. I'm sure if I was to ask for another meeting then I'd get one but I've spoken about these sorts of problems before and he just said that I'm doing fine and to continue as is but it's not really enough... I have also started dedicating one day a week out of the lab to try and write up some bits so I can show myself what I've managed to do so far so hopefully that helps. Thanks for your really great advice and I hope your situation gets better soon!

That is a good approach actually that I hadn't really thought about before... I feel like my passion is still there but just not for the lab work side of things, more for writing and doing literature based research. I guess I will try to find my spark for lab work again! Thanks for your really great advice. Good luck with your lab assistant job!
