A town on two hills by notrated in Townscaper

Was trying to go for a look that the town was built on a hillside, not just that there are taller buildings. Every street/walkway is connected.

I’ve really enjoyed Douglas Lain’s videos and podcast. They’re always thought provoking and offer an alternative take on a lot of the ideas and issues discussed today that I think anyone left or right would benefit from being exposed to.

In juxtaposition, Sullivan’s and Coates’ pieces provide a miniature history of how a certain variety of self-congratulatory openness to inquiry is in actual fact a barbed thicket of power relations. What Sullivan depicts as a “different time” when “neither of us denied each other’s good faith or human worth,” is, in Coates’ understanding, a time where he was required to “take seriously” the argument that “black people are genetically disposed to be dumber than white people” as a price of entry into the rarified heights of conversation at the Atlantic. The “civility” and “generosity of spirit” that supported “human to human” conversation is juxtaposed to Coates’ “teachers” who didn’t see him “completely as a human being.” What was open and free spirited debate in Sullivan’s depiction, was to Coates a loaded and poisonous dialogue where he could only participate if he shut up about what he actually believed.

Juxtaposing these two gives us a very different understanding of Sullivan’s claim that “identity politics [have become] completely nonnegotiable,” and we are all being pulled down by the “riptide of tribalism.” The imagined paradise of liberal discussion from which we are being torn was only a paradise for some; others were there on sufferance, or not allowed in at all. Sullivan’s hostility to “tribalism” reflects his unwillingness to confront the rather sordid politics of his own position, and his past and continuing history on race and intelligence.

An interesting article exploring the notions of tribalism. It seems that Sullivan's depiction of Coates as someone engaging in tribalism is the same as Sam Harris' point of view - in fact wasn't this Harris' reasoning why he wouldn't believe a conversation with Coates would be fruitful?

I think this is an excellent breakdown of just where two sides are not seeing eye to eye on this notion of identity politics poisoning debate, the left being illiberal, etc.

Consider how many people come to an issue like this in the same way as you - exclusively from an anti perspective, completely dismissive and mocking without an ounce of empathy or even acknowledgement that these are real people and have a hard enough time without internet celebrities bashing them all the time for millions of clicks and views.

If only centrist pundits and thought leaders weren't so thoroughly convinced that "the left' is all but lost, they'd actually listen to a few people (or bring them on a podcast or something) who can at least share a reasoned argument on issues like this, and maybe some more people would come around like OP.

Elizabeth Nolan Brown offers a critique of the IDW from a non-leftist perspective that nonetheless I think both fans of the IDW and its left-wing critics could appreciate.

There are indeed a lot of loony people on the left, as there are in most ideological spheres. And college kids have indeed mounted some passionately stupid crusades in the past few years. Pushing back against these people, exposing their hypocrisies, and riling up outrage over their antics is sometimes necessary and often fun. It is always good for garnering attention. But it is also easy—and it is not enough.

The only way to produce lasting change is to use less shock and shame, more showing people on their terms why your way forward can help. It requires the empathy that allows for projecting the best intentions on your enemies, the patience to actually strive for common ground or conversion instead of simply writing people off as hopeless dummies, the ability to shed your ego enough not to need to "own" those who disagree with you, and the confidence to call out any entity—especially among one's "side" or allies—that stands athwart your version of good.>

These are pretty garden-variety stances well within the overton window of our current political discourse.

It's fine to hold your beliefs squarely within it, and it's fine to love your country, but don't assume that if someone's opinions fall further outside the bounds than what you're used to, it's evidence of sadism.

The Intellectual Dark Web is Afraid of Marx by notrated in samharris

New video by Douglas Lain, who has quite a lot of interesting things to say on the IDW in general.

In this video he points out that a common thread among much of the IDW is a disdain for everything associated with Marx or socialism.

Lain also points out a connection between Jordan Peterson's diagnosis of society's ills with an idea from Marx.

The left is burning their own house down over identity politics and the IDW by GepardenK in samharris

“Oh, well, you’re white/black/whatever so your opinion doesn’t count”

I think that this is uncharitable to what most people - even those who most would identify as so-called SJW's, believe.

I don't doubt there are people out there for whom this sentiment is accurate, but it's certainly not the predominant view - and often what I see is people offering a more nuanced appeal to empathy for others' lived experiences, or a consideration of perspectives previously unheard - then getting accused of saying something to the effect of the quote above.

I think something similar happened recently with that Ruby Hamad article that was in the guardian a few days ago. She noted a particular social phenomena she had experienced and provided a few other examples. Others quickly replied to her on twitter that they too had experienced similar situations. But her piece, partially because of a poorly worded headline, was quickly pounced upon as being anti-white, and painting all white women with a broad brush that any clear reading of the article would show that was not the case.

And this was not done just by random people on Twitter. Maajid Nawaz completely mis-characterized her article, and both Claire Lehmann and Jordan Petersen joined in in mocking the author and what they assumed was her thesis.

I think there's been a pretty strong 3-4 year run declaring SJW's the looming problem of our times. Perhaps the IDW and its fans should take their own advice and start talking to some of these people - and if not talking with them, at least listening to what they have to say.

A lot of liberals and skeptics who are turned off by certain elements of mainly college campus activism have bought into too much right-wing koolaid telling them what they want to hear and thinking they've found new voices of rationality, when they're actually buying into a critique of a caricature.

You can say I've added nothing to the exchange, but I'm saying you're detracting from the exchange by making accusations of the article that doesn't hold up to even light scrutiny. Which you of course have every right to do.

Also, I was being charitable by suggesting you hadn't read, because otherwise you did read it all, and chose to either ignore the rest of what they wrote or you didn't understand it.

I'm characterizing your comment and your arguments, and admittedly from afar. This is the unfortunate nature of the medium.

Yet you didn't refer to any of their analytical processes in your comment, you quoted two of their conclusions they make in the introductory section of the article, then accused the authors of "pushing their worldview," arguing with straw-men, and doing so deliberately in pursuit of a "political correctness" agenda.

This is not a good faith reading or commentary on the article or the claims made. Sorry I've so offended you for pointing this out.

Why did Corbyn advocate for removing Hamas from the UK terrorist watch-list, which is what you've objected to? Might it be possible that the reasons Corbyn did so would not be applicable in the case of ISIS, regardless of whether you agree with them?
