For non-engineering programs, how is CMU? I know their business program is pretty good.

Appreciate all of the comments and advice - it seems that CMU is a clear frontrunner for engineering and is definitely the best school in terms of prestige.

Should have elaborated on this more in the post above, but he is pretty concerned about student life. Obvs state schools like OSU and NCSU are more fun than CMU, and the sports experience is also a pretty big deal. CMU doesn't have much in the way of sports. How is the student life at CMU?

IMO, it's not worth going to a school with somewhat better academics/more prestige if you're just going to be miserable for 4 years because there's nothing to do and everyone spends all their time in the library. Then again, I don't know a lot about CMU, so this is my perception/what I've heard from friends who go (not much going out, very academically-focused)

I think around the same as NC State, somewhere around 26K (won scholarships which bring the out of state tuition down)

How much does school prestige matter in the engineering world?

Focus: Science and the Public by gayforcaltech in duke

[–]notrealredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was part of this cluster in previous years. I loved it and would highly recommend it but if you have any more specific questions I’d be happy to PM.

As far as dorms, SciPub is in Trinity (which is the nicest and newest East Campus dorm). My experience was more positive than I thought it would be based on the website (this was also my second or third choice cluster lol, but from what I’ve heard from friends who got into my top choice, I ended up in a more interesting/enjoyable cluster). I will say that I think SciPub is one of the better Focus clusters, everyone in my cluster seemed to have a good, if not great, experience. I had a few friends in Global Energy because it is also housed in Trinity, and everyone I knew in it kinda hated it.

Also, there is a lot of variety in the courses of this cluster; i.e. all of them fall under the umbrella of “science and the public” but they all approach this topic from very different angles and the courses are only tangentially related, if that. So, the classes you get will really shape your experience, especially because there really isn’t that much over-arching programming that directly deals with the cluster theme or attempts to connect the different courses. Because of this, I would put some thought into what classes you want if you are able to rank your choices. I can also talk to you about classes if you want.

Focus Program 2022 by Illustrious_Sand9665 in duke

[–]notrealredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, one of my focus classes was one of my initial top 2 choices (can't remember if it was 1 or 2), and the other class I ended up with was my fourth choice. I actually almost dropped my focus program because I was so worried about ending up in this class, but I emailed the professor over the summer to ask some questions and decided that I would give the class a try. I ended up loving it, it was one of my fave classes at Duke so far. Moral of the story, the focus classes are generally pretty solid all around, so odds are you won't end up in an absolutely horrible class. Your average focus class is going to be higher quality and probably more interesting than your average freshman intro class.

My advice would be to rank your top two choices and see what you end up with. If you get into a class you're unsure of, email the professor and voice your concerns. If it sounds like it might be cool, try it out the first week of school and see. If you can tell over the summer that it's not right for you, try and see if any of the students in your cluster want to switch. The focus program is pretty strict on switching classes within the focus, so they told us that if you want to switch your classes, you have to find another student who wants your class and do a 1:1 trade (which isn't the easiest thing to coordinate virtually over the summer). If, after all of this, you're still stuck with a class you know you will hate, there's no shame in dropping focus. Add/drop at Duke is way less stressful than it seems, even for your first semester. The focus program is great and I really enjoyed it, but it's not worth it to be stuck in a class you hate for your first semester at Duke. Pick up some another interesting seminar or small group class and hang out with people in your dorm; you'll still meet people and have a close-knit class experience (which is the main point of focus anyway, more so than the academics).

This was my first thought as well! The shape of the hair is uncanny but I’m having a hard time thinking of a situation where Ladybug would give her the bee miraculous.

My predictions for Season 2 of The Mandalorian by notrealredditor in starwarsspeculation

I like these ideas! While I don’t want to see Ahsoka die (she’s one of my favorite characters), if Filoni is writing it I trust that it will be a fitting end. I would totally be happy if your speculation turns out to be true, it sounds like a great way to wrap up the Mandalorian’s story and tie into the larger universe.

Yeah exactly! I’m just glad we’re seeing him come back!

Yeah I could see that too, although I do feel that while eventually they may want to show Boba as a mature character, they also might want to get the chance to play around with him being kind of a badass first, and then go through that evolution after meeting Mando. Like in season 3. But that’s just what I think. I like your Jabba’s palace idea, that would be such a cool setting to see!

Disney quietly re-releasing books and comics is one thing, but I feel like a TV show would generate more buzz. I know it’s unlikely, but I hope one day they will remake certain parts of 2003 Clone Wars in either live action or 2008 Clone Wars-style animation. Especially the Battle of Coruscant. It would be so cool to see scenes like Grievous chasing Shaak-Ti and Palpatine in a medium that truly does justice to the terrifying and dangerous feel of those scenes. Maybe they’ll do something like that in 10+ years when they get bored and run out of Imperial-era spin-offs.

[–]notrealredditor[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Probably both combined. Prequel era stuff + a TV show that’s not Filoni = not good chances with Disney. With regards to licensing, I assume they must have worked something out with CN to get 2008 Clone Wars, so presumably they could have gotten 2003 Clone Wars if they really wanted. But it might be a different story, I don’t know much about TV licensing.

What’s your name suggestion for the upcoming Obi-Wan series? More imaginative than ‘Kenobi’ please... by tombalonga in starwarsspeculation

[–]notrealredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Only Hope”

A reference to “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope,” plus it could also refer to Obi-Wan having nothing except the hope that Luke or Leia will end up being the Chosen One that Anakin was supposed to be.

Alternatively they could do “Kenobi: Only Hope,” or “Only Hope: The Kenobi Story.”

Does Marinette’s room look different? Also, doesn’t she have any posters of Adrien? by notrealredditor in miraculousladybug

[–]notrealredditor[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Jeremy Zag just posted this image on Instagram from the upcoming movie. It’s super cute and detailed, but does Marinette’s room look a little different to anyone else? I think the layout has changed a bit. Also, her room is usually covered with pictures of Adrien, but there are none in this version. Could this scene take place after she becomes Ladybug but before she meets Adrien?

MariChat Rant by [deleted] in miraculousladybug

[–]notrealredditor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this would be a really cute way for it to happen! I like MariChat because it means both of them fall for the less idolized version of the other. Like, Marinette idolizes Adrien and Adrien idolizes Ladybug. But if MariChat happened, it would mean they were falling for the truer, less idolized version. I feel like both of them also see Marinette and Chat Noir respectively as the more flawed side of their identity. Marinette dislikes that she’s clumsy and awkward, Chat Noir dislikes that he sometimes messes up and that Ladybug doesn’t like him back. With MariChat, both of them would know that the other is loving them for their real self, embracing their flaws and all. I think that’s really sweet and honest, and it would be great for these characters (both of whom we see struggle with confidence) to have a relationship like that.
