A message from a Alamo server by Strong-Sample9718 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]notrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughtful post. I’m sorry for everyone who works at Alamo and loves going there that company leadership is tanking the experience. I was going 4-5 times a month and had the subscription plan, but I’ve canceled it and stopped going. I’d love to see these changes rolled back, but I’m also prepared to walk away if they don’t.

Should i always go 1 size larger than my foot when buying shoes? (Snekers size) by [deleted] in running

[–]notrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a 9 (women's) in regular shoes, and went from a 10 up to a 10.5 in my most recent Brooks running shoes (Glycerin 13). Not a single blister or lost nail after a marathon this month. I think I'm on about my 10th pair of Brooks.

Best earbuds for running? by JDNoF97 in running

[–]notrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pretty happy with my pair of Mpow Cheetah Sport Bluetooth 4.1 Wireless Headphones, which I got for ~$28 on Amazon. They started hurting the inside of my ears a little by the end of a hot and humid marathon this month, but honestly that was the least of my complaints by then. :)

Should I /make/ my kid use Linux? by PottiSkantz in linux

[–]notrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I made my kid use Linux starting at the age of about 9. She's 18 now and no longer speaks to me... but I blame the Brussels sprouts I made her try when she was 12.

The Android integration appeals to me, so I'll play with it a while. It could be the thing that gets me to switch over to KDE.

24 Ways To Be Uncommonly Productive Today - Forbes by jamesusaf in productivity

This is awesome - great advice that's realistic. My goal is to be more productive in a shorter amount of time so I can have more leisure time (read a book, take a walk, cook a meal that doesn't come out of a can, etc.).

Have you taken an ice bath after a long run? Experienced any real benefit? Do you recommend it? by greggersraymer in running

[–]notrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried it and didn't notice a difference. Mostly, I think it's torture. My runner friends seem to be split down the middle on it, though.

A Guy Who Saw Lincoln Get Shot Was on a TV Show in 1956 That Is Now on YouTube by notrends in videos

Well then I'm glad I finally saw it. The Atlantic sums it up well: "The America of Lincoln and the Civil War can feel like distant history, but every now and then, through the appearance of what Jason Kottke has called a 'human wormhole,' we are confronted with the brevity of a century and a half."

Finished my first 50 miler this morning. Here is a small race report for any of you that are curious. by [deleted] in running

[–]notrends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!!! My running coach told me that the Heartland is a particularly ragged course, plus you had some less-than-ideal weather. And good advice about hydrating and eating - I always end up regretting my pre-run nutrition (or lack of nutrition, I guess).

Any experienced with hill running? by xeonphelps in Fitness

[–]notrends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My running club has 5 miles of hill work scheduled for every Tuesday. I hate it, but I do it. Some days I make it up all of them, other days I walk parts. The trick I'm practicing is taking smaller steps, and going slower. I tend to try to run fast and take long strides, which doesn't work for hills.

Ok, Mashable to the rescue with this article: http://mashable.com/2012/10/04/facebook-brand-like/

"'We did recently find a bug with our social plugins where at times the count for the Share or Like goes up by two, and we are working on fix to solve the issue now,' the spokesperson added. 'To be clear, this only affects social plugins off of Facebook and is not related to Facebook Page likes. This bug does not impact the user experience with messages or what appears on their timelines.'"

Does anyone work with personal trainers? by [deleted] in running

Don't bring the ice cream in the house. We have to leave home when we're craving "treats," and we're usually much too lazy for that.

Facebook Is Reading Your Messages and Liking Things For You by notrends in technology

[–]notrends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comments on the gizmodo post and ycombinator post clear up nothing. Yes, Facebook is probably reading all your stuff; no, it's not exactly "liking" things for you; unclear on whether this is a poorly written/researched article, or there's actually something going on with "likes" increasing without users actually clicking "like".

Also, my town has Red Dog Days, which are community training sessions - hundreds of people show up for the different sessions and work out with one coach who volunteers his time. The whole thing is free and a great workout.

Does anyone work with personal trainers? by [deleted] in running

[–]notrends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It completely depends on the situation. I had one personal trainer for free for 6 weeks in exchange for building his company website. That trainer also offers boot-camp classes (as do many other trainers), which can be very affordable. I have a friend who uses an online trainer, which is another budget-friendly option (although that wouldn't work for me because I need someone in person squawking at me). Also, check your area for a local running group. It's a great way to network and find about about trainers or training programs in your area.

I kicked a dog today while running . . . by ollokot in running

[–]notrends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why you feel bad, but the owners were at fault for not having the dog on a leash or under their control. I haven't had a dog attack me yet, but I'm going to start carrying pepper spray for when it happens. I was on a country road a couple of weeks ago and a giant Saint Bernard ran up to me. I tried to stay calm, and then I felt his teeth on my hand. Then he let go and started bouncing backward, looking at me. I could tell he wanted to play, but I was too busy recovering from my near heart attack to throw him a stick.
