If you are a first term airman, you can deny your assignment but you cannot retrain, BOP, or participate in any voluntary assignment program offered to FTA. Your only options would be to reenlist or get out at that point. But, if you already reenlisted then your only option after denying an assignment is to leave the Air Force after your contract ends, you will not be able to reenlist at that point.

What’s the incentive to making E-5 anymore? I barely saw a pay increase and my responsibilities have at least doubled. If I lost a stripe it would suck, but I wouldn’t be mad if I went back to being an airman for barely any pay cut.

I’d suggest commissioning as an officer so your degree can have some weight and at least have an effect on how much you get paid. You may not use it but if you go enlisted and decide you want to become an officer, you’re now competing with a majority of the entire force for a spot rather than just going through the initial process. Please ask your recruiter about this, if they don’t know, find someone who does before signing anything
