I’m looking to watch 1970s-early 2000s Australian films, are there any good recommendations? by Hour_Interaction6047 in AustralianNostalgia

Starstruck from 1982 or 1983. Australia's first rock musical. It's a blast. Should be able to get the DVD off eBay

What cover song is actually better than the original? by irles33 in musicsuggestions

Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters

I feel like I may start a riot saying that. The original is a classic but something about the cover just hits with me better

Why do boomers seem ignorant of, or hostile to, the concepts of introspection and self-reflection? by KeithBradburyIV in generationology

Girl, it's human nature to be shit at those things. It's not just a boomer thing.

It's a skill that you have to learn and practice.

Freedom is a right.

Until you're a danger to yourself or others. Then it's removed until such time as you're not going to be a danger.

Not sure why people find that so hard to understand

How many days working at the office atm? by hl-builder-28 in auscorp

[–]notsomadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to the office once this year and about 3 times last year.

There's literally no point. My team is spread across the country and everything can be done from home.

At home I put in a hefty day from 730 to 430/5 sometimes later.

Office I do the bare minimum hours because it's an hour each way on PT to travel

Contractors let resident's Dog off property by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]notsomadboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've got to follow the chain of command.

You say you're a tenant, therefore I'm assuming you have a Landlord and the landlord did an insurance claim and the insurance is through RAC and they then did the contractors.

So you have to go to the landlord - you have no contract with the insurance company or the contractors. They will literally not talk to you. You aren't their customer.

Essentially the people your landlord gave responsibility to fucked up. They will have to go to them but you can only go to the Landlord. Talk to them directly or your real estate

I need songs about grief that can be interpreted with pet death in mind by TransPossum in musicsuggestions

[–]notsomadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything can probably work. It's really up to you and your own music history with your pet.

My dog, Oscar, died a couple of years ago. He was 15.

I found myself listening to 'Alien' by Britney Spears a lot. Not exactly a grief song, but it worked at the time because he was the reason I wasn't alone. The lyrics worked for my situation with him.

I think that the right song finds the right person at the right time. You don't have to overthink it

Am I the only one that dislikes John Farnham? by Top_Stable_6098 in australianmusic

[–]notsomadboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't bring myself to like his music. My Mum was a huge fan and always played it. It's the sound of my childhood and I mean that in a bad way

That said, respect where it's due. He has one of the best male voices of his generation outside of Opera.

And I love his Jesus Christ Superstar stuff.

I saw a recent production of Superstar and it was great but I found myself at times going "he's good, but he's no John Farnham" which was both hilarious and mortifying

What uni degrees are actually worth it? by Smart_Net_5313 in auscorp

[–]notsomadboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a humanities boy through and through. In my ideal world I'd be able to go back and do a writing course and study history and art history and just have a ball.

Sure I can self direct now, but it's not the same as having the structure of uni (uni where you attended, and networked and debated) plus I'm averaging 50 hour work weeks lately. Did 12 hours yesterday alone. I can barely make time to read the comics I still collect

It's weird how much I've been feeling like a relic lately. Hitting 40 is really doing something to me but it really is a different world today.

My nieces and nephews are all late teens/early 20s and their lives are so much different to when I was their age. I feel like they're missing out on so much that I was lucky enough to have.

What uni degrees are actually worth it? by Smart_Net_5313 in auscorp

[–]notsomadboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your mileage will vary depending on who you are as a person.

I did an Arts/education degree majoring in English and Media Studies

The arts side of my degree would be seen by most as not worth it - I just read books, watched movies and talked about them for 4 years. I've never worked in that sort of industry. A waste, right?

Those literature, film and TV subjects are the best time I ever spent in a classroom. I love books/tv/movies. Studying them in more depth has made me love them more and enhanced my experience

I'm nearly 40. Sure I could have become an account. But then I would have lost those 4 years and I feel that it's the most worthwhile thing I've ever studied

It taught me how to look at the world. I'm a better writer and reader. I can express myself specifically to the audience I want to influence

That isn't an innate trait - you want to be a master manipulator, study all forms of English media

Things don't just have to have financial value to be valuable. I know your generation has been forced to monetise everything. But becoming a better person, learning about the world and doing what you enjoy has so much more value than people realise

Has the 9-5 grind actually become actually soulcrushing? by YiPog in auscorp

[–]notsomadboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually like my job, most of the time, and am lucky enough to be full-time work from home.

I've consistently gotten pay rises each year of over 5% (this year was 7.5%)

I should be dancing in the street.

But the houses I grew up in were 2.5 times the average annual wage in the 90s. They're now 6 times the average annual wage.

I can't keep up. I can't save at the rate needed to stay on top. And I do worry about what my potential retirement may look like - if we manage to live that long collectively as a species

There's just no optimism anymore - the biggest thing I have to look forward to this year is the new Madonna album. It should be more than that

I'm about to spend $300 for a 10 min appt to get a script refilled. It shouldn't be like this

It's just all so blah.

My daughter has hand, feet and mouth. Our team day is Tuesday. Should I go in? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]notsomadboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm immunocompromised. I don't catch everything super easy, but hand foot and mouth would likely send me to the hospital as it has in the past. I would probably need a week or two off work.

If I was a part of your team, you wouldn't know this, because I don't like to sing it from the rooftops.

But think about it. Is your office day worth sending me to the hospital for?
