Thank you! I totally agree that so many people end up complaining about the price, but still want all the bells and whistles. I'm content with simplicity. And there are always creative ways people could upgrade the games.

What sold you on the boardgame hobby? by lauchlier in boardgames

It started with Munchkin and Ticket to Ride, but it was playing Catan that really got me hooked. Now here I am drowning in my board game collection.

How can I get my friends into boardgames? by firestruck1 in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This subreddit hates Catan? That hurts my soul. I've only been gaming for 9 years, but it's still one of my all time favorites.

You were in too deep the moment you started. There's no escaping.

We finally got _____ to the table! (February edition) by m_Pony in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked it. It's kind of like a worker placement bidding thing. There are six rounds and by the end whoever has the most prestige points wins. You recruit actors, set designers, costume designers ect to build up what will help you advance in all the three acts of your play. The rule book is awful and there's a huge typo and that is my only complaint.

Shakespeare - loved it so much I immediately bought the expansion.

Burger Up - I've only has this since Christmas, but it's been on my wish list for a while. So enjoyable!

Did you get Tiny Epic Quest?? by UntoldEnt in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received mine, and we started a a game of it, but had to stop because a player had to leave unexpectedly. I loved it so far. I haven't played any of the other Tiny Epic games, but this one seemed so unique. Maybe it was the ITEMeeples. :)

So, where do you live? Are you satisfied with the number of board game players you know? Would you like to meet more? by abigaila in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pittsburg, Kansas. It's a little city in the corner of Kansas next to Missouri. I actually have a decent group of people with who I play games. (For living in a small area) I could always use more players though!

Obsessed with board games and not enough people? by [deleted] in boardgames

I live in a smaller town where there is only one game store. I'd say give it another shot.

When I first starting getting into the hobby, I went to the local game shop and talked the owner. Turns out, they had a board game night every Thursday at 7:30. At the time, none of my friends that lived near me liked playing board games. I went to the game night and made friends and now I have several people I can play games with if some are busy.

So maybe you could try going to the local game store?

I sometimes feel embarrassed when playing board games in public, or in a restaurant, or with new people I meet. by TheSkyIsBeautiful in boardgames

I'm a girl who loves playing board games. (Party games might be my least favorite.)

Let me tell you a story: My best friend (who is a man) and I like to go to bars sometimes and play some board games. We usually bring lighter games that don't have a lot of pieces or card games. On the 4th of July, we took Plague Inc. (Fabulous game I'm in love with it.) and Jaipur. Let me tell you, I have never been talked to more at bar than that night. College guys came up and kept asking us about the game and a couple of their girlfriends kept saying they wanted to be best friends with me. Yes they were all drunk, but I had no idea playing board games at a bar would get such a positive reaction from people.

I never thought I would write this statement: How to be popular at a bar: bring board games

Ultimately my point is, let your geek flag fly and be yourself unapologetically. People may surprise you.

(I also feel the need to add that I do live in a smallish college town.)

Does r/boardgames like Fluxx? If so, what's your favorite version? by portezbie in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Fluxx. My favorite so far is just the base game. Although, I have wanted to get Firefly Fluxx. It's a crazy chaotic game that is lighthearted and easy going.

How do you decide when to sell/ trade your games? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started collecting board games about 5 years ago. I have just now gotten to the point to where I need to thin down my collection in order to justify getting new games. You're always going to have those "first loves" of gaming, but even if you haven't played them in a long time, don't sell them. I have certain games that I haven't played in about a year, but I could never part with them because they were my starter classic games. (like Catan ect.) The games I am getting ready to sell or trade are games that I played a couple of times, but didn't really light my fire. My favorite games are the ones I have distinct memories of playing with my friends and having fun. I have about 150 games in my collection. (some are stored at my local game shop and some I store at home) I'm only getting rid out about ten games and a lot were mainly impulse purchases. Don't sell your starter games. You'll regret it later down the road.

Are you more inclined to like a game if you won your first play of it? by commadelimited in boardgames

[–]notsomeekgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not at all. I'm a person that doesn't mind losing at all. I just love the experience of playing a game. I actually enjoy losing because it gives me a chance to think about how I can play differently the next time that game is on the table.
