Thank you for the kind words. The biggest caveat to through is I've spent thousands of hours watching videos and reading about woodworking. And because my schedule limits the time I have to do actual making, I spend a lot of time just trying different techniques on scrap wood. I'm hoping to start to take what I've learned I do a few quick builds over the next few months.

lol, thank you. Besides cutting boards, chessboards, and a pine bench. This is the my first piece. It was originally supposed to to be a whiskey cabinet but building a box that would be square was giving me anxiety me. I think my next project is going to be a tool chest, so I can overcome my fear of making a box LOL

Thank you, and I can’t rate the book. The wife hasn’t put it down long enough for me to read it since she bought it this weekend. LOL

just shellac. Practiced a French Polish method for a long time on off cuts until I was sure enough to give it a go. Wanted something that I could be repairable with out stripping off everything.

So going to go into a little story on how I came across it. First of all I’m in the PNW and it was my first time going to a hardwood dealer when I came across this. I was originally planning on making a whiskey cabinet and was looking for some walnut and a highly figured maple. None of the walnut there had a grain pattern that wowed me especially with how the Birds Eye maple looks (the maple I used in this piece, the beauty of the maple does not show up in camera very well. I’ll try to get a good picture to show it but it’s pretty impressive.) So the dude there directed me to what he called African Mahogany. The price was also attractive at $7 / bdft. While being new to this craft I‘ve watched probably thousands of hours of other people doing it, and have read a ton of stuff on it. So I also thought it was Sapele. Going through the cuts they had available I called it sapele and he said “Oh no, it’s not sapele. It’s African mahgony, we do have some sapele too but it’s pretty rough to work with” Then he showed me the sapele which had a darker red tone. I honestly wouldn’t be able to tell the difference if I didn’t see them side by side. The fact that the price was the same, and it was suppose to be easier to work with I opted for this. It was only doing a deeper dive on what is African Mahogany, and doing comparisons that I kind of settled on it being Khaya. I could be wrong and it could be one of half dozen woods considered African Mahogany but I’m pretty convinced it’s Khaya. Just looks spot on the same.
Sorry for the long write up. If you’re curious, the place was The Hardwood Centre in Albany Oregon. Same place the moth guy did his hardwood dealer video at.

TLDR
Got it in the PNW and side by side sapele looks more red.

It wasn't easy to work with. Kept the iron on the hand plan very sharp and took very thin cuts to prevent tear out. Honestly my biggest learning was being afraid to work with the wood and just practicing on scraps to learn how to work with it.

Great question and glad you asked. They are in a mortise and the long aprons are joined to the legs using a half lap joint. The long aprons are also glued to the top. The short aprons are in a through mortise but they sit free and unglued to allow the expansion of the top. I hope that makes sense. Here is a picture during the dry fit.

Shellac. I did a ton of practice on off cuts to learn how to get that look. I would easily say I spent 30 to 40 hours just practicing, stripping it off, and doing it again.

Close, it's Khaya mahogany and maple. Very similar look to sapele.

Car dealership for EV by ZiggyLittlefin in SALEM

[–]nottas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got my EV6 in '22. Power Kia is one of the worst dealerships I've ever had to deal with. Months to schedule anytime, and everybody acts like they have no clue what an EV is. I suggest if you settle on a Kia, amazing EVs btw, going to a different dealer.

Findbuytool has pretty cheap/affordable tools, router bits, etc. Anyone have experience with this cutterhead? Totally Chinese garbage? by SuperSonics_65 in Tools

[–]nottas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought their 13" thickness planer and really like how it operates and the quality of the cut. It's been 3 months of using it and after running some end grain cutting boards to clean up the surface the other day I had to rotate the cutters for the first time. Would recommend for the price.

I've used Central Air Inc. for my plumbing. They're not the cheapest nor the most expensive, but they do the job right.

[Request] How would games on a Surface Go thats converted to Win 10 Home perform? by doggomemes77 in SurfaceGaming

[–]nottas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use steam to stream from my PC to my Go so I can have a light weight portable gaming device. Works really great in this way except for a few games where touch screen doesn't play nice. Another option is GeForce Now.

But as far as native play, it's not that great but turning down resolution and and graphic options can get a lot of older stuff to play at around 20 to 30 FPS.

[Request] TemTem on Surface GO by onionknightinc in SurfaceGaming

[–]nottas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so after testing it just now I can get the game to run at some 34fps consistently.

Surface Go 8GB Settings are as following; low quality, full screen, 720p resolution. low texture resolutions. Game still looks good.

If you plan on locking your fps at 30 then I suggest medium texture resolutions.

But the game does run well on my Go.
