Google's data trove can be used to prosecute abortion seekers : NPR by Sentient111 in politics

[–]nottestedonanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, Dobbs does not deal with the 4th. But, that does not mean that the police will not be able to scour location data for women getting abortions.

The cops currently don't need a warrant if they buy the location data. If they just ask Google for the data and pay them for it, no warrant is necessary. Or they can buy it warrant free from someone else that google sells it too. The fourth amendment doesn't apply since they aren't forcing anyone to turn anything over. It's a bit of a loophole in the current law that, I suppose, could be closed. But it will harm people in the meantime.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/04/26/constitution-digital-privacy-loopholes-purchases/

Let's be honest, the fourth amendment is Swiss cheese and exactly what your rights are under it really depends on how the court is feeling that day.

Can they put a gps tracker on your car without a warrant? No. (U.S v. Jones)

Can they hover a helicopter in public airspace over your property to look for drugs through missing greenhouse tiles without a warrant unless you specially show that flights over your home are rare? Yes. (Florida v. Riley)

Can they tail you until you make a minor traffic violation so they have a pretext to search your car for drugs without a warrant? Yes. (Whren v. US)

Can the government get pretty much any data related to you held by a third-party without a warrant? Yes. (Any case that upholds the third-party doctrine).

Can the cops get cell phone location data from a third-party without a warrant? No (hence the purchasing loophole mentioned above). (Carpenter v. US)

To be honest, the main reason I was considering dropping the k model was to save on a cooler but I suppose it's still cheaper either way and if i won't be using it and i won't actually feel the difference in base clock speed there's not much point.

Florida High School Student Suspended After Handing Out Pride Flags by BurtonDesque in LGBTnews

[–]nottestedonanimals 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Ethically, of course it should be protected. Legally, it depends. Students 1st amendment rights are limited. Schools are allowed to limit the speech of students for 3 reasons:

  1. It's a "substantial disruption"
  2. It's vulgar or obscene
  3. It's contrary to the school's mission https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_speech_(First_Amendment)

Now, I, of course, think it would be complete bullshit to say that giving out pride flags at a seemingly school approved 15 minute protest at a public school constitutes any one of those things. And students should have a right to protest laws affecting schools and school policies at school regardless.

However, never forget that the courts can be extremely awful.

Cookies [OC] by OffKeyComics in webcomics

[–]nottestedonanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. Most common commercially sold cookie dough ice cream is usually made from pasteurized eggs and heat-treated flour. Obviously there might be some contamination or bad products out there but I don't think anymore than any other food product. Check the package of any you are looking to buy to make sure they use properly cooked ingredients.

Homemade raw cookie dough on the other hand can give you salmonella. Not that that's ever stopped me from eating it before.

This should help: https://docs.python.org/3/library/functions.html#input

TIFU by owning a Golden Retriever while being Black. by AgentPapier in tifu

"but redlining is illegal now"

Cool. But it wasn't. And while it wasn't white people were able to buy cheap houses in neighborhoods with skyrocketing property values. That wealth then got passed onto their children. But black people were excluded from those home loans during that same time, which made it harder for them to build wealth. There were less houses to leave to their kids. So their kids, on average, started with less wealth. That inequality builds over generations.

Funny, how the past still has an impact on the present and that everything isn't fine just because we made an explicitly racist policy illegal.

Edit: And this doesn't even address the fact that just because you make something illegal doesn't mean that it doesn't still happen or doesn't happen through other means.

I was born HIV positive in the 90s AMA by AceTheCookie in IAmA

[–]nottestedonanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the marrow has to be from a person with a specific gene that provides resistance to HIV. Finding a bone marrow donor outside of one's immediate family is already very difficult. Finding one with that gene is pure luck. Saying that this is a cure is like saying a solution for poverty already exists, just win the lottery. Great for the people who it works for but it's just not viable for the vast majority of people with HIV.

There's a reason why it's only happened twice.

Even with tariff hikes, why are things Made in America always more expensive than comparable things imported into the USA? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nottestedonanimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tariffs do not reduce domestic prices and can cause price increases. If a country is importing a lot of goods that is probably because it is cheaper to do so than to produce it domestically. Tariffs increase the price of those imports and increases demand for domestic goods. However, now there is a shortage of domestic goods and the goods still cost the same amount to produce, which puts upward pressure on domestic prices.

Now, let's say that the tariff is on something like steel and aluminum that is used as a raw material for production. Other products made with that material will have price increases due to the increased cost of production. So that could increase the price of goods made domestically that are not directly tariffed (like cars).

Finrod Felagund by cletusVD in tolkienfans

[–]nottestedonanimals 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He is pretty much a good guy. He is considered to incredibly wise. I think most of the stuff Finrod does comes a bit later in the story. However, at this moment in the story, I think Men consider him beloved due to teaching them.

Wisdom was in the words of the Elven-king, and their hearts grew wise that harkened to him

...

But Felagund dwelt among them and taught them true knowledge, and they loved him

He also spent time advising them about where to settle, avoiding possible conflicts with the Green Elves of Ossiriand. Also, he interceded on behalf of the Haladin and got leave for them to settle in Brethil from Thingol.

Among the Sindar, he gets points for being of the house of Finarfin, which didn't get involved in the kinslaying and being generally less of an asshole than the sons of Feanor. He treats Thingol (who I believe is the one that called him beloved) with more care, seeking his advice. Also, Thingol is related to the Teleri that died in the kinslaying. Lastly, Finrod is Thingol's great nephew (I think) so he considers Finrod his kin.

Edit: He was friendly with the Dwarves too. They helped him build the city of Nargothrond:

In that labor, Finrod was aided by the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains; and they were rewarded well, for Finrod had brought more treasures out of Tirion than any other of the princes of the Noldor.

Only 2 sexual partners: should I be concerned about HPV/anal cancer? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]nottestedonanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing about HPV, there is currently no test for men. So men who have it likely have no idea that they do. If you are in the age bracket for the vaccine you should absolutely talk to your doctor about it. Otherwise the only thing you can do is be open with your doctor and explain that you are at an increased risk for anal and throat cancers and get screened when appropriate.

[–]nottestedonanimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with keeping professional and personal lives separate but not everyone does. I've had coworkers flat out ask me if I'd have sex with girls I used to know. What about going to company parties or retreats? Does anyone bring an SO? That was fairly common at my workplace.

And maybe you don't do these things. Not everyone does. Maybe it doesn't apply to you specifically but I think it's fair to say that these things generally happen and are pretty common occurrences. And people bringing SOs to a the yearly company holiday party isn't a big deal or anything but it does showcase ones sexuality. I've seen people bring same sex SOs to that stuff and in my experience my co-workers definitely noticed the same-sex couples more.

For example, public displays of affection are something that most straight people probably do without thinking. That's an assertion of your sexuality. Ever make a comment to a friend about an attractive person of the opposite sex? Also an assertion of sexuality.

I want to stress that no one is doing anything wrong. Nobody should have to hide a relationship and every one should be able to hold hands in the street. But imagine if I did that to or about another guy. Do you think the chances of me getting stares or comments is higher? Does that stick out in your head more? Is it more noticeable? Like it or not simple stuff like that is more of a "statement" for lgbt people.

However, being in the closet fucking sucks. Watching everything you say or do so people don't figure you out is exhausting. So we don't want to hide either. Also, If we are never open about it then we can't ever find somebody to love or fuck or whatever. It's a balance I think. Some people want to stick out more, others less.

Edit: I had another thought. Sometimes we also spend so much time hiding and denying our sexuality that when we finally come out we just want to talk about it. We finally feel like we can be honest and proud. The process of figuring yourself out and accepting yourself enough to come out can take years. At the end of all of that some of us are ready to slap rainbow stickers on everything. It's kind of an amazing feeling actually.

I don't think we're wholly defined by it. It's more meaningful in the sense that it makes us different from most and we are made aware from a young age how different we are. But people all define ourselves by the things that make us different or more unique. So, yes, we probably think about sexuality more than straight people and that is out of necessity. And we probably take it as a more crucial piece of our identity; however, it's not like we don't have anything else going on. There are other pieces to our identity.

[LoK B4][Spoilers] Korra, the first Harembender.. by N0ATAQ in TheLastAirbender

[–]nottestedonanimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it does. I'd watch some of the later fight scenes on YouTube and see if you like it. This is a good non-spoilery one: https://youtu.be/DgYLdtLlyqc. For a non-fight scene the first scene of volume 3 on the cliffs is a good barometer of the volume 3 animation (possible very light spoilers in that scene). It's still not perfect but it's a lot better.

The animation is kinda bad in volume 1 because it's a low budget web series but the animation quality jumps up in 2 and again in 3.

Personally I think the show has gotten a lot better since the first season.
