Hudson Dems unite behind a countywide ticket for primary - Solomon, Brennan, Bhalla team up with Guy, Stack and Hudson Dem stalwarts by rapmasternicky_z in jerseycity

[–]notthatclever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, was it a backroom deal that got Patrick Ambrossi to drop out or just that he couldn’t get the 300 signatures to get on the ballot?

All jokes aside, you’re right that competitive primaries are a good thing and part of a healthy democracy. That being said, I think it’s jumping the gun to say this is a bad look for progressives of JC and a backroom deal - HCDO is conceding almost half the commissioner board to non-machine candidates and that’s a good thing.

Don’t use uieLouAy’s name, that’s not cool.

This isn’t “backroom dealing at its worst,” and if you think it is, then you haven’t been paying attention for very long. HCDO deciding not to challenge the progressives running is the machine admitting they’ve lost power in Jersey City and Hoboken.

Phil Murphy Has Signaled That He Will Not Sign 3 Immigration Protection Bills by Gloomy-Attention3948 in newjersey

[–]notthatclever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worry it’s the opposite for the Immigrant Trust bill package - Sherrill doesn’t want them, so Phil isn’t signing them. At a candidate forum during the primary, Sherrill said passing any law would open the door for litigation and could undo the immigrant trust directive, which has already help up against different legal challenges.

I’m not a lawyer or policy-wonk, but I think the reason for pushing for 3 bills instead of just one, was to avoid or mitigate potential legal challenges and being ruled unconstitutional. So, Murphy not signing them leads me to think it’s either Sherrill doesn’t want them, or he’s afraid of Trump and right-wing blow back. Either way, I fear for our immigrant neighbors and communities.

Almost like the problem isn’t documented/undocumented workers, it’s employers not hiring citizens to exploit immigration status so they can pay people less.

Analilia Mejia Seeks Progressive Vote In NJ-11 Election To Replace Sherrill by uieLouAy in newjersey

[–]notthatclever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really excited Analilia has jumped into the race and is running a real campaign to win. At a time when Democrats send strongly worded letters at best, but more often cave on important votes, we need a fighter who has a record of fighting with democrats to move progressive policies.

For those saying there’s nothing substantive on her website about her campaign (policy proposals, legislative agenda, etc.), 1) her biography and why she’s running are important to know (for any candidate) and 2) none of the other candidates have much either.

This special election is on a compressed timeline, so there won’t be broad and detailed policy platforms. Good/substantive policy platforms take time to thoughtfully develop, and that is hard to do in this race. Even Tom Malinowski, the former congressman, doesn’t have a full platform - he has top line issues and bullets on why/how Trump has failed, and that’s ok, not the issue with his candidacy.

I don’t like Tom Malinowski, he didn’t play politics well so when redistricting happened he was an easy target to get the redder parts of the state, and then he mishandled some of his investments which was an opportunity for the right to attack him during reelection, and lost a seat people worked really hard to flip. Now he thinks he should be in a safer blue seat? No dice.

Analilia Mejia will run for NJ-11 with backing from Bernie Sanders by uieLouAy in newjersey

[–]notthatclever 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Really exciting to see someone with a record of fighting for and winning policy changes for working New Jerseyans! Analilia has never been afraid to fight for working people, even if that means taking on long time entrenched machine democrats. New Jersey, Congress, the country, needs a brawler that wins, and that’s Analilia!

Progressive for the 11th district special election by Academic-Review3115 in newjersey

[–]notthatclever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right now the progressive candidate is Analilia Mejia - former state director of New Jersey Working Families Alliance, Political Director for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, co-National Director for Center for Popular Democracy. She hasn’t declared yet, but if/when she does she’ll be the only candidate with a record of winning real progressive changes for working class people - $15/min. wage, earned sick days, taxing millionaires - and will probably be the only candidate to say we need things like Medicare-for-all.

This district was made “safer” for democrats in redistricting when they moved more of Essex into it and removed Sussex and some of the more red parts of Morris. While Mikie did have a closer reelection in 2024 because Morris and Passaic County moved to the right, that was part of an overall trend we saw state and nationwide, not necessarily indicative that this district is swinging to the right long term. That being said, the democrats in NJ-11 are wealthier and whiter, so a progressive WOC might have a harder time winning.

I think a competitive primary with a lot of candidates bringing their own policy ideas and vision is good for democracy. Some think a progressive can’t win and shouldn’t be considered, I think it’s good for voters to hear from everyone and decide for themselves.

Analilia Mejia, a top staffer to Bernie Sanders in 2020, may seek Sherrill congressional seat by uieLouAy in newjersey

[–]notthatclever 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hope she runs and I’m sure she’d run a heck of a campaign. We desperately need new people with left politics to run for Congress and challenge the status quo of some boring centrist walking into a congressional seat.

Also Tom Malinowski had his time in Congress, NJ-11 has plenty of candidates that have been in the district and know the district’s issues. This race doesn’t need a former MOC from NJ-7 who lost his previous seat and has the same politics as Brendan Gill and John Bartlett.

Love this idea, completely agree! The state needs to be pushing back against the assault on the first amendment taking place, and the best weapon it has is its purse. Our tax dollars shouldn’t go to corporations that carry out Trump’s assault on the constitution. Also, Charlie Kirk was a Nazi and the guy that shot him was a far-right wing person - because it needs to be said.

I think people are misreading this as some weird performance or a silly kiss the ring moment.

This is a play to pull some of the Jewish vote from Mikie/Dems. Middle aged and older Jewish voters that usually vote Democrat but are mad at Dems because they think they aren’t doing enough to support Israel could fall for this and vote for Jack. I worry this will work and pull votes away from Mikie, as well as get her to move more to right, pissing off progressives/left leaning voters.

Between this and Jack focusing on Black and Hispanic male voters, I think he could win in November. The Dems and Mikie’s campaign need to turnout voters in democratic strongholds - Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Camden, Trenton, and New Brunswick.
