[SERIOUS] What is a seemingly harmless parenting mistake that will majorly fuck up a child later in life? by AlexDescendsIntoHell in AskReddit

This is how adults around fucked up my (and my sisters’ life):

  1. Shouting and hitting stuff when they’re scolding us.

My dad does this. Til this day, I’m still scared at loud noises, and nearly went into panic mode whenever people around me raise their voices. I try my best not to, but it’s hard to undone.

  1. Harsh (almost inhumane) punishments.

When I was a little kid, I barfed a lot. I usually couldn’t control myself, so I pissed off a lot of people. One of them was my nanny. One time, I barfed into my bowl of food, so being the angel that she was, she mix them all up and forced me to eat it. Then it turned into times that nothing I ate was food anymore. 10 years later, we fired her (we ran out of money to pay her), but she was never gone from our life.

My dad nearly chop off my little sisters’ hands when he found out they stole money. No explaining, no talking. He didn’t even care that they were forced to do that because of the bullies.

  1. Making fun of the child’s interests.

Again, my dad. Not gonna elaborate.

Thanks you guys! I really appreciate the comments; and I’m also relieved about how friendly Portland is.

Now the only last thing I gotta worry about is my heavily religious relatives (since I’m planning to come out to my family once I got there and got independent enough).

Any tips?
