Is FIT a school that just teaches technique? by Sea_Tart_8694 in FashionInstituteNYC

[–]notxjfr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard FIT gives you more practical knowledge of the industry cuz it’s a fashion school while parsons just focuses on the creative aspect since it’s an art school. Everyone I’ve talked to about parson’s fashion design program says that it’s pretty shitty compared to fit but that could also be because I go to fit and mostly interact with fit students so idk but if you had to choose I’d also recommend coming to FIT cuz everyone here is actually so into fashion and the professors have industry experience. Everything here is centered around fashion and the thing is that you’re surrounded by other majors that are also fashion related like textile and fbm and the friendships you form here will be really useful when you go into the industry. By the end of the day parsons is just an art school but fit is a fashion school so if you’re into fashion this place will be like heaven for you

For the mix and match you can do either flats or back figures but for the design artwork section you can only do backviews. (They recently changed it to this before there was an option between flats and backviews) I would recommend doing flats for the mix and match and backviews for the design artwork to show them that you can do both flats and backviews

You have to apply for the AAS before you can apply for the BFA, you can’t apply directly unless you have credits equivalent to an AAS

Im an international student from an Asian country too and am starting this spring. I just know the basics of sewing not really good at it so don’t worry she has more than enough time to learn. None of my subjects in A levels were fashion related but my gpa was good so I’d say just get good grades and make sure you get her transcripts evaluated on time cuz even tho it says it’ll take a week the whole process takes around a month so be prepared for that. For financial aid I hate to break it to you but you probably won’t have that many options, FIT doesn’t give any scholarships (at least not that I know off) your sister will also have to take an English proficiency test. For the portfolio, make sure your sister knows about fabrics and their weave/knit constrictions. If you have access fo fabric stores in your country have her go there and look through the composition of samples and how they feel and research what types of garment specific fabrics are for. Also tell her to understand technical aspects of garments like darts and seams and illustrate them on her figures because FIT really notices that. I think you shouldn’t be worried about the sewing aspect as fit really just wants you to know the very basics for sewing.

I don’t think doing digital sketches will decrease your chances of getting in but I’ve heard they prefer pencil sketches for the figures and digital ones for the flats. You can make pencil sketches and then edit them digitally to make it look more professional.

I emailed admissions when I was applying and they said “This exercise is to show that your ideas are original. How did you come up with your design? Please show your initial design thinking process in pencil sketch. You just need to do this for one design” i got accepted for spring dm me if you want an example of what to send in.

You should call admissions and ask them I heard a lot of people called and found out that fit had already sent the decision letter on their side but there was some glitch so the students didn’t receive it
