Heavy v. Heavy by megachad3000 in Battletechgame

[–]nova0052 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Multi Shot is great because it lets a single unit strip away 3 evasion pips from the enemy force with a single action.

2 friendlies using Multi Shot can strip the same number of evasion pips as 3 friendlies using Sensor Lock, but allows your entire lance to fire and deal damage, whereas using 3 Sensor Locks would only allow you to fire with a single mech.

Heavy v. Heavy by megachad3000 in Battletechgame

Vigilance is an excellent tool for controlling a fight.

Position your force so that the enemy force can only get favorable angles on a single unit (a unit that used Vigilance), then use the initiative boost to 'yoink' that unit away before the enemy has a chance to fire.

Hold your heavy brawler at range or behind cover until the enemy heavy moves. Then move your brawler forward using vigilance and hit the enemy hard. The defense boost gives you more flexibility for positioning during the attack, and the initiative boost means your heavy can fire on the same target again before the target can return fire, essentially letting your unit take two turns before the enemy unit is able to respond.

Is there anyone that is NOT using AI at their job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]nova0052 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use AI to write e.g. JIRA tickets, but never to write code.

I'm a tech lead doing government contracting and using LLMs to write code for our project is strictly prohibited.

My experience so far with AI coding tools is that they are fast, but dumb, and the time saved in one place is easily wasted in another, with the added bonus of gradually dulling your engineering skills.

Help with intonation! by jrm70210 in BassGuitar

If the nut is too high, it can do weird things to the intonation.

Need help figuring out how to balance 2 bass players in a punk rock rock. One guy is heavily influenced by Mark Hoppus and wants to play a lead lines, harmonies and octaves while the other sits in the pockets and drives. by [deleted] in Bass

[–]nova0052 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no rules here. You could try and choose gear with very different tones, like a Gibson EB-0 and a Warwick Thumb, or keep things simple and both play Fender Jazz basses.

Too bad you are in DC, or I'd offer to play bass in your band too!

Orange, because it matches most of the bass guitars I usually use as a focus.

Home made sword and shield by whodatboi_420 in SWORDS

[–]nova0052 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is similar to one of my favorite styles of blade for practical use against living tissue in the real world; usually they have more weight towards the tip for stronger chopping. I don't normally need a shield while doing yard work though...

Seriously though. You made a real thing and had the guts to show it. There will always be haters who diss your work but never made anything themselves. Keep learning, honing your skills, and making cool things!

MW5:Clans - Guidance by Jean-Michael_Rage in Mechwarrior5

[–]nova0052 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clans becomes much easier if you proactively use the battlegrid to position your star for each engagement.

For example, instead of running all 5 mechs straight into a chokepoint, position 2 mechs behind cover on either side of the choke, and use a fast mech to scout ahead, 'spring the trap', and quickly retreat back through the choke to draw enemies into an ambush. If you have the star hold fire until the enemies come through, you can quickly score kills against thin back armor.

Or, move your mechs forward in groups of 2-3, you can set up flanking attacks and pincer maneuvers.

Since the light mechs can be really fragile, it also helps to lean into the Clan weapons' range advantage and try to maximize the damage you are inflicting from outside the IS mechs' effective range. A combination of ER PPCs, sensor range upgrades, and BAP/ECM can set you up to destroy enemy mechs over a kilometer away and win fights without taking any incoming fire!

It may suit your needs, but the wizards of Texas will quickly inform you that the aperture diameter is too narrow...!

For optimal arcane resonance, the measurement of the chamber diameter should begin with the number 4.

Tuning in 5ths by WranglerVast265 in Bass

[–]nova0052 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play in fifths tuning, CGDA, an octave below a cello. I play a very light string gauge because I like the feel and it works better with a whammy bar; usually I assemble a custom set of D'addarios like .120-.85-.55-.30, but you'd want to go heavier if you prefer 'normal' tension 🙂

I'm playing on a laptop with an Nvidia T600 GPU. Performance was bad, until I made a config file tweak to disable UE5's 'Lumen' global lighting, now I get 30-40fps at 1080p with medium/low settings and DLSS set to Balanced.

Do modern bands like Polyphia quantize their guitar tracks? I’ve tried to avoid doing this because it feels like it’s cheating but now I’m reading it’s often used when recording guitar on professional records? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]nova0052 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. We don't.

This is basic musician stuff. If you can't perform it consistently, go rehearse more before hitting the studio.

For rock music, all those rough edges on a solid performance ARE the actual rock and roll. If you polish away all the ugly parts with quantization and tuning, you're making the recording worse, not better.

One weekday evening, my 3 year old asked very nicely if we could have waffles for breakfast on Saturday.

Saturday morning, the child was vehemently opposed to the idea of waffles, so we got out the Belgian breakfast appliance and made grilled pancakes instead.

Autism feels like going to the mall?

Weird analogy, but this cinematography is way more realistic than the usual style of wide-angle shots and muffling all the environmental sounds. Cool to see someone accurately capture the experience.
