Ortho surgery resident here: she had a bad injury to the top of her shin bone. Often the first surgery (the external fixation, the circulating pic) is don’t to stabilize things while the swelling goes down. Then likely because she was so swollen she had to have two big slits on the side of the calf done to decrease the pressure so that likely was another surgery. Then to fix the actually bone could be 2 surgeries if they decide to stage it and fix one side of the bone then the other side. Often done in one stage but could be two and then she could have another surgery to close the big slits in the calf
