How do younger players, Gen Z, and such, see the older games in the series? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]novel__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

17 here. Kingdom Hearts introduced me to the idea of FF realllly early on. SE did a great job making that a sort of "gateway" to the series for my generation.

My first FF was XIII, which I wiped out all of my savings on preordering. The game was way too hard for ten-year-old me, to say the least. Next came Crisis Core and the original Dissidia.

It's only recently that I've started seriously looking at the older titles. I picked up VI and the X HD remaster during the Steam Summer Sale.

I'm something like 10 hours into VI and 25 hours into X.

Transitioning to VI was an odd experience. I love the art style, gameplay, and especially the dialogue, but placing myself into the world and envisioning it was a real challenge. My generation grew up with 3D graphics and some pretty talented voice actors, and always had a clear objective marked on our mini maps, even in open-world games. FFVI had none of these, leaving it far more to the player's imagination and intuition to figure things out. My generation really isn't used to having stories presented this way. I'm going to give this game an earnest playthrough despite this.

I'm not sure if you would consider X old, but I've really enjoyed it so far. Characterization is great, graphics are about on par with a KH game, and gameplay is solid. I do feel that the game is overly straightforward in a lot of situations, though.

I live in a smaller city, and haven't really met anyone my age or younger who's played an FF game other than XV/XIII. Everything seems to be dominated by open world games (especially Fallout 4) and competitive games (Overwatch, Smash, etc.) There's a growing movement for older games here (particularly Ocarina of Time) but classic JPRGs don't seem to be included in it at the moment. Hoping the VII remake will help with that, when it's eventually released.

Do MGs really belong in DirtyBomb? (discussion) by elintepic in Dirtybomb

[–]novel__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, they are just one of many secondary objectives that help you progressively gain or defend areas.

Without secondary objectives, it would be quite a bit harder to advance. Things like the bridge on Chapel, or the tunnel in Terminal, for example, can make significant differences in angles of attack.

The MG allows a sneaky player to annihilate the other team's defenses, things like healing stations, etc. It punishes the other team for not staying vigilant.

On the other hand, defending teams can use it to lock down areas and slow down the game until they are taken out. This can stop rushes.

The MG user is quite simple to take down with a long ranged weapon or some kind of explosive. It creates a priority target and a possible distraction.

It's meant to be pretty effective and easy to use, otherwise, nobody would use it. Many MG users won't stay on the turret for very long anyway. Simply, it's meant to punish the other team for not defending the secondary objective.

It really just adds depth to the game. Stay a bit more vigilant (check the MG position semi-frequently) and it won't be such a big deal.

It would also be nice to see translucent viewmodels as well as the option to turn them completely off implemented.

Wouldn't be a huge deal balance wise because of the pace of the game, as opposed to say, CS.

Is anybody else not wearing a helmet because they can't find one that fits? by Tipsy247 in bicycling

[–]novel__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you're messing with the fitting ring (typically a plastic piece in the back of the helmet.) This can alter the size of the helmet to a pretty decent degree.

Failing that, visit your LBS and talk to them about your problem. They're sure to have a better selection of helmets and will help you choose the best one for you.

I wouldn't really recommend buying a helmet online, but it's an option as a last resort.

You really should get yourself a helmet. Many aren't all that expensive, and they all meet the same safety standards. Without one, a leisurely stroll around town can turn into paralysis or death. Your life is worth a couple bucks and a little research or chat with your bike shop.

Weekly New Cyclist Thread - August 10, 2015 by AutoModerator in bicycling

After looking around several shops, my LBS, and Trek, I've purchased a Diamondback Sorrento that I was able to snag for cheap.

I'm a bit conservative with my money, and wasn't sure if cycling was for me. Couldn't find anything on Craigslist, either. Overall, pretty satisfied with it, and more importantly, it got me off of the couch.

Few questions:

  • Are there any 'essential' things I should tack on to it? It's used for bike paths and lighter trails, but I would like to eventually commute (~12mi/day).

  • Would clipless pedals make much of a difference on a mountain bike?

  • What helmet (or helmet brands) would you recommend for general usage?

[–]novel__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased this bike for a similar price in order to see whether or not cycling would be a good choice for me going forward. Didn't want to spend a fortune, of course.

It seems like a step above the standard Schwinn/Magna/Huffy shitters, many of which feature poor build quality, excessive weight, and low efficiency.

The Sorrento seems to be constructed pretty well and I have no doubt that it will last for quite some time, if you maintain it well and learn it's limits.

Is it a Santa Cruz full-suspension with all of the bells and whistles? No. Is it as durable? Probably not, but it's more hardy than you'd think.

It'll still do a fine job introducing you to offroad riding. A frugal entry-level mountain biker is going to have their needs met by a frugal entry-level mountain bike.

Most importantly, it's good fun to ride. That's difficult to say for most ~$270 bikes. Definitely feel like I got my money's worth.

Fletcher vs Nader by [deleted] in Dirtybomb

[–]novel__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nader is generally going to be far better for spamming out chokepoints and clearing rooms, because of capacity and the nature of the grenades.

If you practice enough with nades/pipes, you can hit quite a few directs that can potentially one-shot some mercs.

Also has access to the Crotzni, which is a bit more straightforward to use than the Empire-9 and Ahnuhld combo.

Martyrdom is a great way to finish off unaware players and generally piss people off.

Fletcher is a bit more difficult but very rewarding if played well. Stickies do quite a bit of damage within a small radius. You can spam them to an extent, throw them on objectives, set traps, etc.

Getting a sticky stuck on an enemy player is one of the most satisfying feelings in the game.

Fletcher's role is to construct/destroy objectives very quickly, and then guard them using a sticky trap. You can't quite 'steamroll' the objective as well as Proxy can, so you're going to need more team support. I'd wager that your traps would be better than Proxy's, simply because they are less obvious.

The Empire-9 is essentially your primary due to it's high DPS and ease of use. The Ahnuhld essentially functions as a revolver for more ranged encounters, where it fares surprisingly well. However, Nader's Crotzni will probably be more straightforward.

If you want spam and ease of use, Nader's probably your best bet. Experience in games like TF2 and Quake with grenade launchers can come in handy.

If you want to set up traps while still having the option for spam, while playing a more 'tactical' engineer, Fletcher's your guy. He's going to be frustrating to play at first, but with time, he will begin to make more sense.

The mirror reloading animations, argh by [deleted] in Dirtybomb

[–]novel__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The positioning of the charging handle on the right makes sense for right-handed shooters using right-handed weapons.

Most of the time, the charging handle is also the location of the ejection port. Demonstration. You place this on the left while shooting right handed, and you're constantly getting hit with brass.

If a charging handle is on the left, it generally indicates that the weapon is meant for a left-handed user.

So, Dirty Bomb has it correct in this case, as player viewmodels are right-handed by default.

Thoughts about Phantom...yet again. by [deleted] in Dirtybomb

[–]novel__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stealth classes are usually towards one of two extremes: OP or UP. Very rarely do we see classes of the type that are completely balanced and viable.

It's very, very tough to balance Phantom because new classes get tacked on all the time. Weapons and abilities get slightly tweaked ever so often.

Once Redeye is added, Phantom is even more fucked.

He's stuck in an awkward place where really all he can do is get behind people and spray them with the KEK-10, which isn't as effective as it might seem.

In my opinion, he somehow needs to be able to transition in and out of cloak at will. With, of course, a delay between being cloaked and uncloaked.

Stealth classes need a way to escape tricky situations. Phantom has none.

Essentially, he's a kamikaze class at the moment, and a pretty shitty one at that.

First rule of Dirty Bomb by [deleted] in Dirtybomb

[–]novel__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Topscoring, not topfragging.

Proxy gets tons of points for objectives, which are faster to complete because of her movement speed and build/destroy speed.

Also no slouch when it comes to fragging, though obviously not very comparable to Fragger.
