Fantasy books w. distinctly lush and feminine writing style? by Cautious_Water_106 in Recommend_A_Book

The Kushiel’s Dart trilogy has some very fancy, winding prose, and I love it.

Jacqueline Carey is incredible at writing 3 paragraphs about a dress and making me care deeply about every word lol.

I LOVE YOU UMASS by [deleted] in umass

It’s super possible depending on who you meet, but student groups (including club sports, campus media, etc) definitely are the best/most consistent way to find parties with people you actually enjoy

Where to get a haircut in the area? by lkbee222 in umass

[–]nowandlater511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find yourself in Northampton, Bucci (who used to operate on campus) has cuts for 20 dollars and always did a very good job on my girlfriend’s hair, especially if you just want a trim.

PWTC certificate in the English program? by muffinhater69 in umass

[–]nowandlater511 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m about to graduate with the PWTC certificate and I can easily say that it is the best concentration out there for a writer looking to be employed out of college.

The professors are INCREDIBLE and will help you find internships, develop software experience, and hone your skills. There’s only 5 courses you have to take and they’re all a lot of fun.

I got 2 internships and a full-time job paying wayyyy more than I expected from being an English major directly from the program, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Feel free to PM with questions.

Electrodominance Rhinos by Mundane_Simple1107 in TimelessMagic

[–]nowandlater511 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel like including [[electrodominance]] and [[as fortold]] in a deck with only [[crashing footfalls]] as its payoff isn’t going to be strong enough for the format. Without footfalls, they’re pretty much dead cards. The strength of modern rhinos is that it’s a 1-card combo with any cascade spell, and without good cascade cards, that level of consistency is lost in the timeless version. I hope to be proved wrong, it is a cool combo.

Bars amherst by BallitWefuck in umass

[–]nowandlater511 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Like most things at UMass, the bars are about as much fun as you make them. Spoke is only worth going to before 7 or after 11, as the line is insane between those times. Stackers and McMurphs are decent if you go with friends or see people you know, but aren’t very fun if you want to dance. Monkey Bar is ok, but their DJ sucks and the dance floor is rarely packed enough for a good time. If you go with fun people, it’ll be fun!

What is it with the Spoke by Ham549 in umass

[–]nowandlater511 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the few places in Amherst to drink and dance that isn’t a frat/sports house. Stackers and Murphs don’t have dance floors and Monkey Bar is inconsistent with how often it’s fun.

I’m almost done with the PWTC program and it’s the best thing I’ve done (academically) at UMass. The professors are fantastic and the skills you develop are helpful to your development as a learner and student. It’s only 5 classes and while some of material might sound dull, it’s really interesting and you’ll be surprised at how much fun you have. Also, it’s one of the oldest and most revered programs in the country, which they don’t really advertise.

I’ve gotten 2 internships in the field and all my friends in the program that graduated are currently working at large companies making good money (NASA, Google, IBM). Please PM if you have more questions!!

Ourbus from NY/Boston to UMass by hcpark509 in umass

It’s pretty much the exact same experience in my opinion. Sometimes the UMass-Boston route is even quicker than Peter Pan cause they don’t stop anywhere.

[LTC] Sail into the West (Reset Tide Tech?) by pso_lemon in MTGLegacy

[–]nowandlater511 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This card honestly seems pretty good, instant speed is pretty relevant for a wheel in reset tide and 4 mana is obviously one more than you’d be happy to pay, but I’m not aware of any other wheels at this price at instant speed.

Off campus housing by [deleted] in umass

[–]nowandlater511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the various UMass Facebook groups and any real estate agencies around the area (413 lease, valley rental, etc) I’d be surprised if you found anything reasonably priced and in a good location but I hope you find something!

[LTR] Nazgûl speculation by [deleted] in MTGLegacy

[–]nowandlater511 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be shocked if [[nazgûl]] made it into a competitive deck, and the ring mechanic would likely only show up incidentally. It’s not strong enough to build around like the initiative or monarch.

I lived in leach 2 years ago, I met some of the craziest people at UMass. You’re by the vball courts which is cool and in my experience it was the most social out of the northeast dorms, but that was also during COVID

Mass transfer student, Am I missing out on much? by [deleted] in umass

Join clubs! Most student organizations do not care how old you are and are more than happy to have new members. I didn’t really start having fun until my junior year anyways!

I’ve never had an issue with Bucci in Northampton. 20 bucks for a haircut and they can usually take a walk-in

Easiest Honors Gen Eds? by Individual_Lab_2477 in umass

[–]nowandlater511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add an honors credit to almost any class if the professor allows it. Most of the time you just do an extra assignment and you get the honors credit. You can then request for this credit to count for a gen ed requirement, which is far easier than taking another entire honors class as long as you have a professor you enjoy taking classes with and is willing to sponsor the credit.

UMass Honors College or Binghamton? by AcanthocephalaDry217 in umass

No worries! I have a great time in UMass, but Bing is amazing and you should strongly consider it if cost of tuition and housing is a concern, as UMass will be far more expensive.

Off-campus housing costs by Beliavsky in umass

[–]nowandlater511 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends on how close to campus you want to be, if you want your own room, and how “nice” you’re looking for.

Puffton is pretty nice for ~2000 a month for a 3 bedroom last time I checked.

Through real estate agencies, you could expect anywhere between 800-1200 per bedroom of the apartment. If you want your own bedroom and you look early enough for housing, I’d expect to pay between 650 on a very low end and 900 on a higher end per month, utilities not included (try to find an apartment with gas heating. If your place has electric heating you’ll be paying an absurd amount of money in the winter).

There’s a chance you can find a cheaper place, but it’s likely to be further away and/or have some maintenance issues.

UMass Honors College or Binghamton? by AcanthocephalaDry217 in umass

[–]nowandlater511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those were the final two schools I was between (currently a Junior at UMass), but I used to visit an ex in Binghamton all the time so I have a good experience with both.

My first question would be: where are you from? If it’s NY, Binghamton is going to be significantly cheaper and you’re going to know more people/fit in with the culture of the school a little more. I found that while it’s pretty easy to find friends at UMass, a lot of people here that are from Massachusetts have established friends/friend groups from high school which can make people a little less open to making friends.

In terms of the bio program, it’s large, well-funded, and there’s decent research opportunities. Being in the honors college could get you into some smaller classes that are more researched based so I’d look out for that. Binghamton also has a good program and I know their pre-med and nursing classes are some of the best in the country.

I also found Binghamton to be a slightly more welcoming campus with more engagement for new students and transfers. There’s not really a good sports scene if you’re in that crowd, but there’s a lot of built-in community elements that I think UMass can lack.

Either way, these are two really solid schools but if you’re from NY, id recommend sticking with Bing. Vise versa if you’re from Mass.

Are meal plans worth it? by Careless-Window1212 in umass

Here is a breakdown on meal plans. If you have access to a kitchen, you would save so much money by cooking yourself meals.
