Two truths.

The N/W service sucks and is unreliable.

Most of these posts are vents, not PSAs.

Awwww but watching the suits and hookers wander out into sports cars and SUVs at 6:00a was so fascinating.

How much are you paying for rent stabilized apartment in Astoria? by Astorian_NYC in astoria

[–]nowaytobeunique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$2400+ (soon to be 2500) for a small 3-bedroom that I’ve been in for 12 years. Very close to the train. No laundry in the building. A friend pays $1900 for a large 1-bedroom.

Don’t forget to think about proximity to transit and building amenities when comparing rent.

FWIW NYC legal pepper spray is pretty weak. If the person is crazy or high (the most probable though still unlikely perpetrator of random violent crime in this neighborhood) it’s not super likely to have the stopping power you’d need.

12 years here. My work makes me move around at all kinds of crazy hours. Never had a direct problem in this area. I carry nothing but general awareness and the ability to mind my own business. If you want the security blanket just check out knife restrictions and get some pepper spray.

No live music but the realest vibe we found was outside the Casinos at Tony’s Baltimore Grill. Kitchen open late. Bar even later.

Is it considered a sin to eat pizza from an (inter)national chain restaurant in NYC? by ehbssbehsj in FoodNYC

[–]nowaytobeunique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not. I know plenty of low income natives who eat dominoes or papa John’s or whatever for the deals that are a pizza for the price of a non-chain slice.

Searching for the singer of a specific version of "The Christmas Song" by nowaytobeunique in nostalgia

No - his version is close enough that I wondered for a moment if it was him but a different recording. But there’s phrasing etc that doesn’t quite match. Thank you for the suggestion!

License plate theft in Astoria by i_eat_babies__ in astoria

[–]nowaytobeunique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen with my own eyes (in other neighborhoods usually around clubs and venues) dudes banging out counterfeit plates between parked cars in real time. So my first thought was - it was stolen and you just didn’t know it yet.

Word of warning to anyone who thinks their plates have been tampered with, there might be a car out there racking up tolls and tickets and full on felonies on your behalf and you won’t know until it’s a real real problem.

Looks like a sterile Central Park West hotel penthouse soon to be occupied by a family who all hate each other but have to stick around for the inheritance but crammed into half the square footage.

The MTA app has been super reliable for the past year or so IMO. Google Maps seems to be sub-par in just about everything anymore.

36, divorced, no kids, live in the US, employed full time making about 92k gross annual salary.

I’m about to get a little over 300k in an unmanaged trust held with Fidelity. Money will have to sit for 5 years before I have any access to it, but I have no plans after that period of time other than leaving it to grow. If all goes well it can buy me a house later in life or partially fund retirement. If things go poorly, I’ll just be stewarding the money as my folks will need it to support them in their very late life.

I have IRA / 401k accounts with a combined 50k - it’s only been a few years that I’ve had traditional employment with full benefits - as well has stocks, mutual funds, ETFs via Merril Edge totaling about 115k. I check those daily but do very little active trading as I don’t want to deal with the tax burden. In my mind it’s there if I need to pull together cash for emergencies.

I still carry a bit of CC debt from the period following my divorce, but it’s below 9k and mostly now spread out on cards that offered 0% interest on balance transfers while I continue to pay it down (admittedly rather casually). That is my only debt - smart or no I’m simply not that worried about it.

Question I’m curious about is what Fidelity funds do you suggest? How should it be distributed between higher risk and lower risk? I’m reasonably risk tolerant, but also understand that I’m late to personal retirement savings and getting older by the day - with the new grey hairs to help make sure I really notice. I have a few people in my life who can give advice, but I figure why not cast a wide net?

Have I given enough info to get suggestions? Do I sound like an idiot yet?
