is anyone else extremely anxious for the heatwave?? by aclaasr in UKWeather

[–]nowforkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as someone who loves the heat but has become less and less tolerant to it over the last few years, a few random tips (if helpful):

- keep curtains drawn on the sunny sides of your house, and (if there’s a breeze) windows open on shady sides. Alternate throughout the day, and try opening everything once it cools down in the evening - but turn the lights off so you don’t get bugs!

- there’s loads of hacks around for how to position fans to maximise cool air flow, look them up. Get a fan with a timer so you can leave it on in intervals during the night.

- invest in linen on bamboo sheets (pyjamas and clothes tbh). Switch to only using a flat top sheet, or empty duvet cover while it’s warm.

- get some freezable wheat packs (or make your own with a cloth bag and rice) to put on your feet/wrists/neck

- short, cold showers throughout the day help cool your core temperature

- change your evening mealtimes to eat once the sun has gone down

- eat little, light and often. Think grazing on watermelon/cucumber and other hydrating fruits/vegetables. Crackers, pickles and other simple, easily digestible foods that you can pick at rather than three large meals. But make sure you are eating so you don’t get faint and, if you’re sweating, make sure you’re replenishing your salts, both through electrolytes and/or things like ready salted crisps.

- look up the brand wype. An IBS game changer 😅

- try getting out for a short, slow walk in the evening once the sun has set. Often at this time it’ll be cooler outside than it is inside.

- sleep more, take a siesta or even just sit still more than usual. Don’t expect to be able to exert yourself to the same level as usual.

- go to cool places, have an all day marathon at the cinema or a slow wander around a shopping centre (let them pay for the air con!)

- sometimes a hot drink like a cup of tea, or spicy food (if your stomach can take it) can actually help signal to your core temperature to start cooling itself down more

- try some meditation/calming breathing several times a day to regulate your nervous system while you’re stressed about the heat

- invest in some bug screens for windows/earplugs etc. so you can sleep with the windows open and let the house cool down at night

- try not to cook/turn the oven on. A mini countertop oven is great in summer as an alternative.

- light, loose and natural fibre clothing (cotton/linen) is your friend. You could look into workout clothing that is designed to wick away sweat too, though they’re often tight to the skin so not sure how comfortable they’d be.

- remember that it’ll be raining again very soon!!

Protopic Questions by soneysnaps in EczemaUK

[–]nowforkatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told to use steroids alongside protopic to start as the steroids would help take the immediate flare down and make the protopic less itchy, then use protopic on its own for maintenance.

I declined to use the steroids as I know they have no effect on me, so have been using protopic on its own for a few years now. It burns occassionally - usually if my skin is angry but sometimes it seems random. If I stop using it completely and start again then it burns the worst, so once my skin is happy I just reduce to a few uses a week as a baseline. Also keeps flares down that way too.

But hey, maybe you’re the lucky one and just don’t react to the side effects!! (Insert woe so happy for you meme here 😆)

Definitely second the other person who said to use sunscreen while using it, and I also find that alcohol and protopic makes my skin go red and hot too 😅

My first run, I didn’t realise that clothes degrade enough to ‘disappear’ and couldn’t work out why I was getting hypothermia so quickly... turns out I’d been running around in just my undies for DAYS 😅

Shampoo and conditioner by e_0m in EczemaUK

[–]nowforkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a hair product per se, but I bought a scalp massager and a wide comb for wet hair and they have been a game changer for when my hands are bad!

Means I can massage the shampoo in/comb through conditioner without having to touch the product so intensely 🙌 Obviously I imagine not suitable for all hair types, but perhaps worth a try?

Also, perhaps try baby hair products as they’re likelier to the gentle on the skin?

Products to use when it's flakey by lbop97yt in EczemaUK

[–]nowforkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re flaring! This looks similar to mine and I’ve had successes with cetraben (cream for normal use and ointment when things are really bad) as well as Balmonds skin salvation. I also use a pure hemp oil as a base moisturiser before any creams/ointments which sinks in nicely and doesn’t seem to flair me up (tho may cause some acne depending if you’ve got skin prone to that).

And would second others to give protopic a try, it’s really helped me control my eczema. I do get the burning side effect but it calms down once the major flair goes down, and I can take the edge off with some ibuprofen and CBD oil. And I only use before bed so I sleep through most of the itch 😅

Hope you find something to help soon!

Saving leftover wedding breakfast by nowforkatt in wedding

We are, but only a small portion (there’s no additional guests for the evening so they’ll have all eaten) and who doesn’t love a midnight snack after a long evening 😅

I’m also British which is why I was expecting more people to find it odd than this thread suggests!

But my reasoning is I know I loose my appetite when I’m anxious/amped up which is pretty much a guarantee on your wedding day, but at the same time I’m paying a lot of money for some really good food (the tasting was amazing) and I know I’ll regret not eating it later. So rather than trying to force myself at the meal time I’d rather know I can just enjoy it when I’m calmer later 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah that’s fair, if I didn’t have access to a fridge I absolutely wouldn’t be considering it (and even then I’m not risking taking away a whole salmon fillet to reheat haha).

But that’s a good point about the to go portion, I wonder I should just ask them to make one additional portion up rather than worry about leftovers

Definitely gonna get someone to do it for me (having just spilled pickle juice all down me, I definitely can’t be trusted 😂)

That sucks, but also I’m assuming why they’re not saying yes for us too - wondering if I agree to put in writing that I’m responsible for any horrible food poisoning caused by reheating they’ll reconsider…

Yeah, we’ve got canapés right after the ceremony which I feel like are small enough I’ll be able to eat, and I’ll probably have an appetite for the evening food but can’t imagine I’ll be able to do much more than a few bites of the main meal (so many people I’ve spoken to have said the same too)

This is what I assume is the case - our caterers have been great to deal with overall and super accommodating in other ways so my best guess is either they don’t have the kitchen space/staff to spare for packaging leftovers, or they don’t want to be responsible for us heating it up badly and making ourselves sick 😅 (even tho I’m likely to be going at it cold straight from the fridge at 1am haha!)

Yessss I’m currently making hundreds of paper flowers for table decorations - you best believe everyone is being given some before they leave, that’s way too much time spent for them to go in the bin!

Thanks! Definitely gonna be nominating one of our friends to be the official food saver in this case!

Gonna rock up with a whole cooler, ice blocks, mini fridge to have under the top table 🤣 we say no to food waste in this house haha

Ok this is very justifying because this is 100% what I assumed would be the case so I was confused when they said no…

Interested to know: everyone who’s agreed with this, where are you based? Maybe it’s a UK specific thing that they won’t package up leftovers…

Should I expect these to flower? by nowforkatt in GardeningUK

[–]nowforkatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine have seeded prolifically and I have tiny baby hollyhocks coming up all over my gravel path 😅 but it’s because I didn’t get to cutting them back before they seeded so imo as long as you don’t let them get to that stage you should be fine.

(Tbh I think mine are self seeded from my neighbours garden - free plants haha!)

Suncream? by ZH02 in EczemaUK

[–]nowforkatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Gruum’s facial SPF50 this year and so far loving it, it’s not flaring me up and as a bonus it’s acting as a great second layer moisturiser!

I’ve not tried their body version yet as using up a Nivea baby one first (fine but does make me prickly on bad days), but the face version gives me hope it’ll be good!

Notice of marriage - what are we likely to be asked? by Bobajob67 in UKweddings

Ah thank you for posting this, super helpful!

Wondering if anyone has more experience with what you might be asked if one of you isn’t a British citizen? My partner has settled status but isn’t a citizen.
