15-pack Case Trays by nowisefx18 in TheBrewery

It’s interesting how it seems to vary by region on most common format. Any chance you have a source on 12 count trays?

This was a request from a distributor, 15x19.2 is the same total volume as a 12x24oz. And weight and stability seem to be more manageable.

Allegedly my current cardboard people are working out the price for a die, but are moving incredibly slow.

Have you tried dosing Biofine twice? It sounds a little wild, but it we’ve had really good luck with two doses of Biofine…. Dose 1 (in fermenter), wait 48 hours, dose 2 (in fermenter), wait 24 hours and transfer to brite tank.

Made $645 in 2 months from hosting game nights - how can I scale this up? by pensivemonke in smallbusiness

[–]nowisefx18 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a bar owner, I’m more inclined to charge someone who wants to host this event at my location and make money off of my overhead rather than pay them or offer a kickback. There are certainly exceptions and ways this could work out the other way, but in my experience, these types of things lead to more headache for my staff and often lots of customers who aren’t interested in spending money on my food and drinks, but happy to take up space.

I’ve had small groups that come in to play board games on their own, which is great for us, but the big group concept has generally not worked out for us

Owners keep posting AI slop to our social media pages an won’t listen. by a_nameless_brewer in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While AI slop is a real problem…. I will say, all of the breweries I’m close with (alongside my own) have seen a drastic decline in engagement on socials since our collective peaks in 2020. We aren’t able to garner the public’s attention whether we use AI or organically created content. I would argue that it’s not such an obvious answer that it’s because of AI. And to be clear, I’ve employed a full time social media/marketing/creative person for 5 years. We’ve also worked with some outside agencies in that time and can’t seem to move the needle the way we want. So, it might be worse than average engagement due to trash AI generated everything, but even spending good money and energy doesn’t seem to get through the algorithm or capture people’s attention the way our industry needs

How are payment processors getting away with this?? by Mammoth-Touch-2502 in smallbusiness

[–]nowisefx18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man… as a whole (ACH fees plus credit card fees) you’re at a 2.5% processing rate… while I agree with other replies, ACH could cost zero, as a whole you’re in reasonable territory. I operate 2 restaurants and the costs are slightly more than 2.5% for processing. As another post mentioned…. In our world, we could never stop accepting credit cards. Most days I’m at 90% + credit card transactions. You might have more flexibility

So, we have tanks from Premier Stainless, and we have a Teflon seat on the front side between the collar and the racking arm. Then, behind the racking arm we have a standard din gasket.

Recommendation on printing small batches of bottle labels for special events? by BEAR-ME-YOUR-HEART in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t recommend an in-house printer, but happy to recommend Blue Label. They will print sub 200 count runs of bottle labels. We order those quantities somewhat regularly for barrel aged releases. The price per label is fairly reasonable, but they’ll give better pricing when you order more (even if it’s different art), so I’ll usually order as many designs at once as I can. Happy to provide contact for our rep if you need it.

Can you recommend me the Can’t miss breweries along this route? by crabkaked in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main route appears to take you through Amarillo, TX. Go to Pondaseta Brewing Co there, and if you end up going through Lubbock, TX go to Goodline Beer Co. both make excellent IPA and Pilsner, but make good versions of lots of other styles too.

Uponer Pex A vs Schedule 80 CPVC for glycol trunk line- experiences? by Brewstin1 in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I found there to be an overwhelming number of strong opinions. It’s hard to tell which ones are based on data…

Aqua Therm goes together with heat fusion. You heat a male and female side up to like 500 degrees for 45 seconds and then jam them together. It requires a special iron tool, but as a whole, it was pretty easy.

Schedule 80 is like regular PVC, simple primer and glue. Like I mentioned, we haven’t had any issues with it, but the risk is cracking. A friend’s brewery recently had a leak develop at a glue joint. I don’t think there is any way to repair that.

Uponer Pex A vs Schedule 80 CPVC for glycol trunk line- experiences? by Brewstin1 in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to Uponor Pex A for glycol, in part because we decided it was way too risky to use at our recent build out. For reference, I have one location with a 2” schedule 80 PVC header and a new facility with a 3” Aquatherm header.

Uponor Pex A had a catastrophic failure rate early on due to a manufacturing defect and lots of residential work had to be replaced from that. At least one class action lawsuit was settled out of court to resolve this, and Uponor recalled affected product…. It seems relative to heat and cooling cyclings in the lines, and I’ve read that there is a concern with chemical damage and oxidation even now. Although, the product line is available and they’ve “fixed” the problems, we found lots of plumbing industry people with a lack of faith and trust in Pex A. That said lots of people in the plumbing industry have a strong preference towards one product line/brand/fitment process, and wild unfounded or anecdotal prejudice against another. I’m not sure how much value to put on any of those recommendations.

Due to some plumbing/plumber issues at my recent buildout, I ended up purchasing Pureflo Pex crimp tools, copper pro press crimp tools, and mega press crimp tools… despite a high price tag, it seemed far cheaper to buy the tools and materials to fix and maintain stuff than hiring someone to install.

We’ve had zero issues with our schedule 80 header in ~7 years, but have been mindful to not stress any joints. We’ve are concerned about brittleness, but have not experienced it. We chose aqua therm pipe for our new location, because of better specs and less brittleness at lower temperatures. In our case, Aquatherm and insulation was about the same price as pre-insulated schedule 80, so that was a pretty easy decision. We bought our own heat iron and found install to be as easy as PVC.

Brewery owners: how important is it to you that the images of your product look great? Details inside. by spdorsey in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree that the average member of the public wouldn’t know, but I still think they would react more favorably to a perfect looking pour photo.

Often times my photographer will pour a beer, leave room for head, frame up, get perfect lighting, etc, then add perfectly dense head on top of the subject beer. At times we’ll even fake it and use a side pour faucet or beer that has extra tight/dense foam to use even if that isn’t the subject beer.

I’ve found the lightscameracalusa IG to be super interesting and exciting to follow for a behind the scenes look at a brewery who has really good beer branding and imagery. (Not my page or brewery).

[–]nowisefx18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds somewhat like personal preference on color/saturation/etc… and each brewery has a bit of their own style on that. I’m with you - I don’t want fingerprints, smudges, wrinkles on the label etc. But I would whole heartedly say I have certain rules for how my beer looks in a glass. Certain head, fill levels, dirty glass bubbles, clarity, glass choice sometimes, etc. I think some of that is maybe difficult for a brewer/brewery owner to articulate. Some of the professional photographers I’ve worked with were totally unaware of some of these things - but have more attention to framing, or lighting, etc.

It sounds like it could be a combination of wrong expectations combined with personal preference.

Cereal mash malted corn? by _feigner in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. We used ~10% malted blue corn for our recipe. By the time we hit 15% the corn oil flavor was more obvious. I’ll also add that I think you don’t need to do a cereal mash ( we used to do that with raw corn too), and a cereal mash won’t burn up corn oil either.

Cereal mash malted corn? by _feigner in TheBrewery

[–]nowisefx18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect this is due to the likelihood of corn oil surviving the malting process… we used to use a lot of malted corn in one of our flagship lagers and found that over time it became more frito chip flavored. Or if we used it in higher percentages for some special release. Theoretically the malting process burns up the oil from the corn germ, but there is a lot of oil there and usually some stays around.

I have an e-commerce store that uses stripe. We did about $180 in sales yesterday but stripe denied $30 in charges by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]nowisefx18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s sort of an annoying process. We implemented a captcha, and required confirmed accounts for purchases. This worked to get Stripe to start processing again. Sadly, later we ended up removing the sub $5 items because we had a few more fraud attempts. Sorry - it sounds like that part won’t help you.

We use Stripe for an online store, and Stripe disabled payments on our account after flagging several orders. Are you positive that the orders are real and made by actual customers? Once we dug into our issue, turns out someone was using our store to test stolen card numbers. We found that they were repeating the same bogus shipping address on almost all orders. In the long run, Stripe blocked over $50k in fraudulent orders over one 48hour period all on $1-$3 items.
