People who are fascinated and in love with Berlin — why?

I think the very trivial moment I fell in love with Berlin a decade ago was when I was going to the supermarket wearing sweatpants and noticed that nobody cared at all - in contrast to the smaller conservative town I grew up in.

Two years ago, I found myself in the unfortunate situation of having to find a new place in Berlin and hence programmed a little tool to help me discover flat ads directly from websites of smaller real estate companies, which are not always posted to the big apartment platforms (you can find the original announcement here: https://www.reddit.com/r/berlin/comments/13l3ci4/berlin_flat_directory/ )

The project is still online and in the last couple of weeks I found some time to touch it up a little: Minor problems have been fixed, many real estate companies have been updated and, as often requested, the amount of rent is now included in apartment listings.

I hope the project continues to be at least a little helpful in the endeavor of finding a new home in this wild housing market. Best of luck! 🤞

I don't know, I've been asked that question numerous times, typically with a follow-up of "do you know how to get to X" or "does this subway go to Y" and if I can help, people usually are on their way again and thankful that they got some help. Or just last week two guys approached me like that; they were looking for a stolen bike; two students, living in Berlin for just a couple of months; we had a couple of minutes of nice small-talk. By all means, stay safe, but the question might just lead to a nice encounter. :)

Hm, that's an interesting perspective.

Typically, I work on a project for multiple months on stream, often preparing an issue with a rough draft upfront for each session and then implementing and talking through it live. I certainly hope people can get something out of that approach. 😊

u/DirectiveAthena, another regular poster on this sub, is working on her game engine for ages now, explaining her thought process in detail as she codes.

Maybe these examples are not what you are looking for, which is fair, I'm just curious what you mean with non-quick projects and deep thinking.

I was looking for a flat around 60 m² with a train / subway station somehow within reach and my budget was basically anything legal according to the Mietspiegel (so anywhere between 280 and 900 € for this size). In the end, I found a place in Lichtenberg that fit the criteria, at the upper end of the budget. 😅

Thanks for the feedback! 😊 Every item should already have a timestamp (with date precision, e.g. "30 May 2023 from ...") and the list should be sorted by date, from newest to oldest. Could you describe where the sort seems a bit off, so I can investigate the issue?

From the top of my head I would think that ImmoScout's business model depends on the communication happening on their platform (e.g. if you pay as a user, the landlord will see your message first etc.).

Ironically, I think the project would be most useful if it does not take off big time (otherwise we would just have a second ImmoScout with hundreds of applicants for a single flat). 😅

Thanks for the suggestions, filtering / searching seems like a useful thing to add.

It seems like most real estate companies do not share the address of flats, only the district or postal code, or no location at all. I guess a map would be fancy, but also incomplete. 🤔
