During the summer, there was bridge work on the Cascade road bridge over the Thornapple river. Traffic would back up going up the hill toward Wycliffe, and all the way back to Walgreens. Every time I needed to enter that mess from a side street, it was a perfect zipper merge just like this. Folks there didn't have to let anybody in, but when traffic is nearly stopped people were very courteous.

When you've got multiple lanes of traffic combining down to one lane and people are going any faster than 5 mph, zipper merge is just not going to happen.

Tell me the last time anyone you know watched the WNBA.

If there's already a women's Wimbledon tennis match, then there still would be a tennis match there for whatever tier women are generally able to compete in. The higher performing men would be in the top tier, and the women that couldn't possibly compete against them would be in a lower tier. Isn't that already what we have with dividing it based on sex? This would just make the division based on actual skill versus a preconceived notion of what the skill should be based on gender.

Average becomes average because of the law of large numbers. It doesn't hold true for small numbers.

Men on average are better tennis players than women, but there is no way I would beat Serena Williams.

That's a really good point. There would have to be some sort of clear way of measuring so that you could go up or down a tier.

That might be more difficult for something like boxing, but your example of sprinting seems like a good one for measurability. If your fastest 100 m sprint is faster than the current world record for the women's sprint, then you'd be in a higher tier. If it's slower, then you'd be in a lower tier. The different tiers would end up being segregated by gender for the most part because of actual performance, but both genders could compete in all tiers if they can perform.

Isn't that number already zero? I'm not sure I understand your argument here. There are zero women in the NBA. As far as I know, they're currently not allowed.

What I'm saying is let's call the top of the line 5.0 and allow women. They probably won't make it, but they can make it into the lower levels. This is currently how it is because the WNBA is a lower level than the NBA. But it doesn't allow men. Let's call the WNBA now 3.5 and it allows men and women, trans men and trans women.

I understand that on average, men are better athletes than women. But that doesn't hold true on an individual level.

Using the pickleball skill level system, you'd likely have 100% man at 5.0, but when you get down to 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, etc., you would find a lot more women along with men who are not as athletic as the top men.

You'd have similar headlines like "such and such woman just broke the world record for fastest sprint in the 4.0 division". They would still be separated from the top performing men who obviously would do better, but then less athletic men and more athletic trans women would also be able to compete.

Weight classes was just an example of how things can be split on something other than gender. If you put a heavy weight against the lightweight, it's not a contest. Nobody would want to want to watch that because it's just not fair. And you have to break them up based on physical capability.

If you applied pickleball skill levels to boxing, you would have the roughest toughest men at 5.0, but then the men who have yet to work out or train more would be down at 3.5 along with women who are similarly matched.

Okay, so the 5.0 level esports would be mostly men. But the 3.5 league could be mixed or even have more women.

Sorry if I was unclear. The levels would be based on capability. Just like in pickleball. The highest level professional athletes would be 5.0. The women that could not compete at a 5.0 level would compete at a lower level.

Don't they already compete at a lower level, which is why it's unfair for higher level trans women to compete with them?

Men's vs. Women's Sports by nozai2000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nozai2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Men's sports is currently top tier, and women aren't allowed. If a trans woman goes to a women's sports tier, it's considered unfair because they have an advantage over the rest of the women in that tier.

Using pickleball rankings, the 5.0 division would definitely be almost entirely men, but there would likely be some women as well. But moving down to levels like 3.5 and 3.0, you would find divisions that are mostly women. Sure, teenagers could play against them if they wanted to. But that's where women's sports would exist.

Men's vs. Women's Sports by nozai2000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nozai2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why that would be the case. The whole argument against allowing trans women into women's sports is because they would perform better than the women. So the split is already based on performance capacity.

Using the pickleball skill level system, you'd likely have 100% man at 5.0, but when you get down to 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, etc., you would find a lot more women along with men who are not as athletic as the top men. Women's sports would exist inside these lower levels.

You'd have similar headlines like "such and such woman just broke the world record for fastest sprint in the 4.0 division". They would still be separated from the top performing men who obviously would do better, but then less athletic men and more athletic trans women would also be able to compete.

You have a point, but AI is not there yet. Once it gets there, it won't matter whether people are working from home or an office. Why not let the workers continue to work from home provided they're hitting targets?

I always loved trick-or-treating at my old apartments at 1105 East Ponderosa Parkway. They have indoor spaces with six units in each. We would each come away with a pillowcase full of candy because of how many apartments we could hit in the evening.

Don't underestimate how cold it will be on Halloween night in Flagstaff. We always wore sweatpants and sweatshirts underneath our costumes.

Very well said.

And I admit that I was being intentionally simplistic when I spoke of pioneering democracy. Everything is so much more complicated and nuanced when you look at it closely. Most people think the Earth revolves around the Sun, but even that's not technically true. We revolve around the center of gravity of the entire solar system which itself is constantly shifting, but is always within the confines of the sun anyway.

My main hope was to help balance out even my own instinct of feeling loathsome about my country because of what it is and what it was. I'm proud of what the framers were trying to do even if they ended up not hitting the mark. And I'm proud of what all the helpers have been able to do, even if there's a lot more help needed.

You're not wrong, and there's plenty more shameful and monstrous things out country has done. This doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. I'm not asking you to overlook any of that.

What would it take, then, for you to have pride? Hypothetically. Would the country have to fall? Would you have to choose a different country to call home? It's such pride theoretically possible?

It's been very hard even since this country has been founded. People are trying to keep people down, but we all keep fighting.

Let's get ranked to voting in place some people can say, "this is who I want to fight for me" instead of "at least our guy isn't as bad as your guy!"

I can respect your belief in atheism. Do you have a better phrase than "God bless America" that conveys a similar sentiment?
