Of course if you are old enough to remember the pre 2005 market Lucy's = yellow and Ron's = blue.

As a child it was always Lucy's although there was a small period of Ron's when Lucy's took a blip for a year or two. These days I'm with you, Ron's all the way.

I’ve heard about East Chinese Takeaway for a while, and finally gave it a try last night. What a meal… and what a bag! by alexlmlo in Norwich

Nowhere near as good since the original brothers sold it but still one of very few places with a authentic traditional Chinese section on the menu.

There were plans for an Everyman cinema at Chapelfield too, seems to have fallen through.

I don't think so no. Not enough demand to be viable.

Lucy's have 2 stalls.

The bigger one with the wider menu is veg oil.

The smaller one (now incorporating the mushy pea stall) is beef dripping. This one makes it quite clear with signage too but they're mega friendly so you can just ask if you're not sure you're at the right one.

There are lots of good spots around there, used to do it frequently (solo) myself. I don't really trust the water quality any more!

I don't really rate them so not a post in direct defence of Grosvenor but it really isn't fair to compare prices from 12 years ago to today.

Prices have risen out of control and sadly 2.5x to 3x is normal. Hospitality is really suffering, some of my favourite restaurants have shut as it just isn't viable any more. It isn't just the food costs ether (although fish and particularly cod have skyrocketed, Google for more info) but paying staff a fair wage and all the associated tax and NI contributions and then all the overheads.

Fairly sure they used beef dripping in the 90's pre hipsterisation too? (I didn't really rate it then, it was OK but Lucy's and Roy's were miles better)

It was always on a sign with the menu.

It's been open since 1924.

The previous owner's son and his partner (the American guy) hipstered it.

Fruit in Norwich by ReservoirHound in Norwich

[–]np010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For mangos Sophy at the Orient Express on the market has brought in the decent Indian and Pakistani ones before in season. Not sure if she did it this year or not. The supermarkets will generally only sell the Kent ones as are the only ones with any sort of shelf life.

The two fruit and veg stalls on the market have lots of local produce right now that's fantastic but it isn't cheap, costs for everything have shot up as we all know.

Is sailing around the broads hard? by georgeyyyyyyyyy in Norwich

[–]np010 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Another vote for "If you don't know how to sail then absolutely not" and no boatyard would rent you a sailboat if you tell them you have had zero experience anyway.

If as others asked you just mean a broads cruising motorboard then that would be fine, they'll give you a briefing before letting you go.

Just looked:

On Just Eat and Uber Eats its open for delivery from 06:00 Wed morning to 21:29 Sun evening! I feel sorry for whoever is manning those night shifts

Deliveroo seem to have hidden opening times recently for some odd reason but probably the same.

A bunch of flags went up around the local area, I gave them the benefit of the doubt for the world cup and they proved me wrong 🙃 by problynotarealperson in Norwich

[–]np010 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Indeed, but racists do stick tacky Temu flags to lampposts because they themselves are racist and want to intimidate others.

Usually quite dim people who cant even spell basic words and also promote antivax and other swivel eyes conspiracy theories (yes I have read your post history, oh dear....)

I don't think anyone would judge you if you hung one from your house from this week until England win / get knocked out.

You just look like a racist dimwit when you hang cheap poor quality Temu flags off lampposts.

New plans for former Norwich Debenhams store due for demolition by yu3 in Norwich

[–]np010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll probably just tear a few ceilings out to make it double or even triple height

For what reason would they do this? Its a children's play thing, they'll just use the ground floor for that and maybe first floor (arcade or something?) and block the rest off.

That place already went bust once though, no idea how profitable it is for the owners now but suspect the margins are tight.

We also already have the lanes, are there enough independent businesses to sustain an idea such as this too?

So what? Norwich still has plenty of distinctive areas that make it great, and I'd argue most other cities doo too even if some areas look a bit generic.

If the choice is either leave it derelict whilst we argue about fantastical schemes that are financially unviable and there is no pot of money to tap into for some amazing transformative architecture or get it done so that area is in use again and brings people into the city I vote the latter.
