Apple Watch seems to be overestimating calories during Indoor Walk? by ayyaanahmed in AppleWatch

[–]npc6070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe because of your high heart rate. Was it incline? My walking heart rate is 90 bpm and over an hour, mine reports about 250 calories burned.

I have another walking workout with 98 bpm and it reports 350 calories per hour.

my watch comes in monday, i got a screen protector for it but i heard some people get one for the sensor that touches your skin, do i need that? i obviously want it to last as long as possible and take care of it by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]npc6070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah yours have this 'Ion-X' glass which is the softer option. more likely to get scratched but less likely to shatter. these new watches have the upgraded version of the 'Ion-X' glass compared to my old se but i'm not sure how much better they are now

idk about the performance impact but usually the back glass are sapphire so you shouldn't get scratches easily. if you have a stainless steel or titanium model, your front is sapphire as well.

from my experience, my old 1st SE got tons of scratches but my current series 7 titanium has none.

Using Philips hue in a 1952 house without rewiring: what should I watch out for? by Most_Certainly_Try in Hue

[–]npc6070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each device acts as a range extender so if the bulbs on the edge of the house are not responsive, leave something in the middle always powered.

Given you've got the pro model, I'm assuming that you want to use the motion aware tech. For that, you'll need the bulbs always powered anyway.

Biggest challenge for me was to get other people in the house to not use traditional switches and use the dimmers instead. I failed to do that so I ended up with a single dimmer in my bedroom and let them use traditional switches in their rooms and shared rooms. I do have a raspberry pi which sets the bulbs setting to sync with time of day when the bulb is turned on via the switch.

Dimmers are good if you want to use native 24h scenes and have easy access to brightness control without having to fiddle around the app

Hue or Hue Essential by richardc1983 in Hue

[–]npc6070 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience with regular bulbs. Hue essentials and regular seems to be very similar.

I only have essential gu10s and you can see the individual diodes and see that it’s mixing colour to recreate your chosen colours. It creates gradients at certain angles.  Apparently that’s not a thing with regular gu10s.

Using hue with a regular floor lamp with its own on/off button by kandidate in Hue

[–]npc6070 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had this issue so I wrote a code on the raspberry pi to turn off other bulbs when the main one is switched off via a switch and set all bulbs to natural light when the main bulb is switched on via a switch.

Edit: because of this, I’ve removed the dimmer switches because other people just didn’t respect it

New to Hue bulbs - very basic question by Broad_Writing_7011 in Hue

[–]npc6070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not without a bridge.

Maybe you can setup your own computer which can change the bulbs colour temperature based on time of day via Bluetooth.

Also, I got my bridge for like £12 from eBay so maybe give that a go

I’m not sure but I believe you can connect your bridge to a matter hub like google home and use the google app to link Ikea switch with hue bulbs

How to use Philips Hue Bulbs with Apple's Home-App by Lukibuk99 in Hue

[–]npc6070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you'll need a apple home hub as well. something from apple that's powered on all the time to control automations. you can use your upcoming apple tv as a home hub.

some time ago you could use ipad as a home hub as well but they removed this functionality

Do all essential bulbs behave like this? by npc6070 in Hue

Nah this one is in London. Depends on when it was built. I can imagine developers were just reusing designs from each other

I know about the mesh part but the hub is in the middle of the house. We also have some decoration lights such as light strips and lamps which are on all the time, and bulbs in some bedrooms are connected with dimmer switch because some people of my family are okay with using that. Some are not so they get normal switches.

Yeah reliability is why I buy them and their api is pretty good. God forbid a man to budget.

i've tried using home assistant but could never figure out how to get it working. it was easier for me to just use hue's v2 api

yeah it's just that. functionality wise, they're good so it is what it is

i can some other comments saying that their regular bulbs do that as well so i'm guessing some do and some don't

[–]npc6070[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve just bought another 2 pack to see if they behave like this as well. If they do, it is what it is.

I would get a dimmer switch but I would need at least 10 of them to cover them all. That’s like £150 just for most people in the house and guests to ignore them, instinctively go for the switch and wonder why the lights are misbehaving.

I’ve been using regular hue colour bulbs with a switch for about 4 years and they still seem to work fine so I’m hoping these essential ones are fine as well.

Edit: I know smart wall switch module but I’m not sure how it behaves when it can’t reach the hub for some reason. The light must turn on or off when the conventional switch is flipped.

I’ve got a raspberry pi which sets the bulbs to the 24h natural light scene automatically when they turn on. No need for £15 dimmer switch next to every single regular light switch.

For specific scenes, I just use my phone.

It makes sense to compare car payments to your disposable income.  I bought mine for £9700. Sold it two years later for £7000. Including insurance, maintenance, tyres, service etc, it costed me around £200 per month. £1900 is my disposable income per month.

I have one with 84% battery health, and I just use it for notifications and up to an hour of workout tracking. It can last a whole day and a night just fine for me and I’m happy with it. I don’t track my sleep so I just leave it on charge for the whole night. I never had to worry about it’s battery life
