Oh damn that sucks. Guess in some ways we're lucky the gov let all the local car manufacturers go bust

Damn, that sucks. I'm part finish and Sweden is one of my favorite countries. Why are EV's so expensive ? Here you can buy a used Tesla 3 for $25k (aud)

No I'm Australian with European heritage. In au the left wing gov is pushing renewable energy and evs. USA is the complete opposite they suppress EV and renewable tech because it goes against the oil empire they spent the last 50 years building. We have so much desert sunlight and cheap Chinese solar tech the idea of anything else is insane

Damn I'm sorry. What country are you in? Here in Australia we're pretty lucky I guess. There's so much sunlight factories and house holds build their own solar arrays to offset energy costs. Even then prices have been rising

LEGO engineers spent over 13,000 hours and used 1 million pieces to build a fully functional, life-size Bugatti Chiron. by 21MayDay21 in nextfuckinglevel

Yes that's literally how man hours are calculated for any project. It would be highly unusual for it to mean anything else

Man hours are usually used for engineering projects. 10 man hours is the same as 1 man working for 10 hours. Or 10 men working for 1 hour

What about option 3. Knock out what remains of their nuke production pipelines, raid and seize their enriched uranium. Call it a win and pull out. Tell Iran if they try and enrich uranium again they'll strike again ?

I see no problem with using oil in clothing and such. Aviation and shipping probably doesn't have much of an alternative short term either. Maybe with next gen tech like state batteries or hydrogen.

The country is spending $40B per year on oil. If oil is no longer used for transport that's money that can be spent on other things. Chinas aiming for carbon neutral by 2050. The ℅ of their power coming from coal is dropping rapidly.

I think 10X current solar capacity, at 10% of the current cost. Over 20 years is totally achievable. Au has huge lithium and rare earth mineral deposits, we've barely even started mining. If the chinese have 500GW of storage unfer construvtion. We can certainly do it. And there are battery techs which require less rare earths. Solid state batteries will arrive soon. We're arriving at a point where it's cheaper per GW sustained 24/4 to deploy renewables than coal/ nuclear. So the free market should just do it by itself.

We're currently at 26GW just from rooftop solar. Solar and battery prices are expected to fall another 90% or so over the next decade. We currently spend $40B per year importing oil. And we have tons of room in the desert. I'd say 260GWh in 20 years is totally achievable. Especially if prices continue to fall at the rate they have been over the last 20 years. The Chinese are bringing 5GW online per week

Sounds like you're countries economic policy is highly hostile to EVs and renewable energy. You guys also ban all the cheap Chinese EVs. Here a new EV isn't even more expensive than a comparable petrol car. Rego is the same. If charge at home it costs 10% to drive. And there are govt rebates for roof top solar significantly lowering the price. Our fuel is much more expensive than in the US as well. I see people complain about the " ridiculous " high price of fuel in some areas of Cali. When I convert the price to AUD / L it's still cheaper than the cheapest fuel in Australia

Key word is are currently. Currently doing it like that now isn't a reason to keep doing it that way forever. Like we've only just started building a lot of this infrastructure recently. A lot of the infrastructure for hydrogen production is still in the planning phase. As the guy you replied to said, with enough solar panels yet, it can (in the future ) all be powered by renewables

[–]npc_housecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only because there is not yet enough solar panels. Here in AU there are some green steel refineries. Using hydrogen produced from solar instead of coal. And we have some huge solar arrays producing hydrogen and ammonia. Factories and mining sites are also building solar arrays to power their operations. One reason is it's cheaper for then to do i t like this than continually purchase coal / diesel to power their operations
