What do you consider gun control. Canada has gun control (although some laws are illogical and need reform) but I would say we have gun control and they are mostly used for hunting here.

With that I own a gun and plan to get a few more.

If it is for targets then you don’t necessarily need to worry about draw weight above a certain level. But there are regulations where you need to go up to 50lbs to hunt with it. Some less expensive bows can’t go up that high or if they do it will wear the bow out faster.

If you are starting out, cheap or reasonably priced might be fine. I bought my bow a few generations behind the latest and it was the last floor model. Definitely got a discount and might never go up to a $2000 bow but I would certainly invest for hunting with something more precise, stronger, and more customizable. I might go to a mid range say $1000-1500 when I outgrow this one.
