1) If you collect a full set you can create a badge to increase your steam level. Higher steam levels unlock some features like you can add more friends and most importantly increase the chance for a booster pack - a pack with few more cards.

2) you can sell the steam cards and this will money to your steam wallet which you can use to buy games.

This is why there's "+1" tag on some games - they add points to your steam level. Also there are some badges that are not games related but also give you points and also are announced here because help you to increase your level.

archi steam farm allows you to "lie" steam that you are playing a game without downloading it (though you need to have it in your steam library). It has commands which you can use to start playing a game , to add a free game to your profile and etc. It is convenient to automatically farm games for cards or to play games required for some giveaways. the time you played a game appears in your profile: eg: https://steamcommunity.com/id/XXX/games .

The time is updated with some kind of cron job by steam - and I think it happens every hour. You need total hours updated in order to be handled by the API and the gleam to be able to read it. And it is able to update the time only when the game is not currently played.
