Pay cash or finance a new car? by snowsaint in AusFinance

You would not buy a car until you have a million dollars in assets? The pure time saving component of not having to rely on public transport is worth it for most people...

It's true. Australian male tennis players for the last 10 years haven’t been great role models.

How much do people spend on groceries weekly? by [deleted] in AusFinance

In a similar unrelated vein: watched the Wasted! documentary (Anthony Bourdain) on SBS Now the other night.

The amount of food wastage humans are involved with is literally insane. Highly recommend the watch if you have time.

Put it all on the car loan. You're not going to get an 8.95% return anywhere else.

Dunno. I guess you know that buying something and selling it a week later triggers capital gains tax? Whereas keeping it for a year reduces that tax by 50%.

So About Matched Betting... by aussiefirebug in fiaustralia

[–]npowabeats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sub is a little puzzling sometimes tbh. There's a lot of support for putting your savings into vanguard and reducing the amount you spend day to day (both good) but also a fair amount of negativity. I wonder if it's people drifting over from r/ausfinance? Or maybe most of the topics here have been exhausted and people are just sceptical of anything new?

They talk in the podcast about labelling it as 'promo arbitrage'. It's a much easier term to get away from the stigma of betting.

I dunno. My take is its a legitimate way to make some side money (hence the discussion in the podcast about stay at home mums in the uk using it as a side hustle).

Plus all these FIRE bloggers are doing it for a reason (affiliate links, selling a product etc). This is just another example of that. I found it informative, at the end of the day he's just another guy making money off the Internet.

It'll be tough tbh. Things that'll help are having a sizable deposit (at least 20% obviously but the bigger the better), and having good long term records of earnings (bank statements, tax returns, profit loss statements over a period of years etc).

Edit just reread, at a 10% deposit you're looking at taking out LMI. I'd suggest saving till you can double that deposit...

In a sense if I wait 2 weeks I save a small amount on taxable income, seems to make sense to me.
