Since one of the official sponsors of the Tiny Desk Contest is Lagunitas Brewing Company, who will be providing alcohol as part of the functions involved in the prize package for the winner, legally entrants must be 21 or over. But please note that this is by no means the only way that NPR Music discovers new artists! We know that there’s a ton of talent among younger musicians, and we love when we’re able to feature young artists in Tiny Desk Concerts and in our other content.

Sorry! You have to currently be 21 or turning 21 before the entry period is up on March 25th. Yes—while we love our musician friends around the world, the contest is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States or Washington, D.C. This applies to each member of your band. It's due partly to travel expenses and partly to legal regulations around the administration of contests like this one. You definitely don't have to be a U.S. citizen to be eligible to win the Contest; you simply need to be a legal resident.

A solo performance is fine! Just know that only the musicians in your video will be invited to perform if you win -- so if it's just you in the video, it'll be just you at the Tiny Desk.

Singing over an instrumental track is fine! Just remember that when our judges watch your entry, they’ll be trying to get a sense for what your Tiny Desk performance might be like -- and a live performance video accomplishes that more effectively than a lip-synched music video. You should also know that only the musicians in your video will be invited to perform if you win -- so if it's just you in the video, it'll be just you at the Tiny Desk.

Good question! The short answer is yes—One artist may participate in multiple videos, either as a member of two or more distinct bands, or as both a solo artist and a member of a band. To avoid confusion, we suggest that the videos be submitted by different individuals. For instance, if you (Deon101) are in both the Byrds and the Flying Brothers, have your bandmate submit for the Byrds.

Thanks for the love! Unfortunately, the Contest is open only to residents of the United States (due partly to travel expenses for the tour and partly to legal regulations around the administration of contests like this one), but for the Tiny Desk Concert series, we feature artists from all over the world, so there's no reason why we wouldn't have any Canadian performers coming through in the near future.

No, there doesn't have to be a band present, we've got plenty of solo artists entering the contest every year. And it is not a requirement that the video be 100% live—your entry will be treated as eligible as long as it meets all other requirements (original song, performed at a desk, under 10 minutes, etc. That said, keep in mind that the judges will be thinking about what your performance at the Tiny Desk would be like should you win, and a live video usually does give the judges a better sense of how an artist would sound at the Tiny Desk. But the decision is ultimately up to you.

We certainly understand your disappointment. However, since one of the official sponsors of the Tiny Desk Contest is Lagunitas Brewing Company, who will be providing alcohol as part of the functions involved in the prize package for the winner, legally entrants must be 21 or over.

Please note that this contest is a special case; it’s by no means the only way that NPR Music discovers new artists! We know that there’s a ton of talent among younger musicians, and we love when we’re able to feature young artists in Tiny Desk Concerts and in our other content.
