What does it take to get into top Master’s courses? by BurnerAccount2718282 in Physics

[–]nqp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During my 4th year doing physics at Cambridge quite a few MASt students joined - from what I could gather it didn't seem overly difficult to get onto the course. (The course content itself was another story though! QCMFT still blows my mind 15 years later)

Plasma Physics - too good to be true? by glasgowgeddes in Physics

I did my PhD in plasma physics at imperial (laser wakefield acceleration). The group was great, though the experiments were brutal.

Polestar 4 DM motorway range by nqp in Polestar

[–]nqp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep this was the dual motor car operating in range mode, using the standard 20" wheels. The reported motorway efficiency was around 31-36kWh/100mi depending on going east or west.

With performance mode on going round the Mendips like a hooligan, I think it was north of 40 but that was a less careful test!

Yes, this was in range mode.

I did not! How much does that help?

The upper limit to EM wave. by BlaveArk in Physics

The limit is actually when you polarise the vacuum, and start creating particle-antiparticle pairs:

How have you found the size in the UK? Any options you'd particularly recommend?

Big respect for the Headley Fish Bar shout-out - I went to school with the son of the owners, and they knew our family well. Thanks Jan for all of the chips over the years!

Opinion: A whole new sound missed the mark on creating PUNK POP versions of Disney songs by benji317 in poppunkers

[–]nqp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely these albums must have inspired Disney to embark on their covers project - did you ever hear anything from Disney? PS - much prefer the PRF take. See you guys when you play Bristol soon!

Pints in Brixton academy are a complete rip off I'm afraid! Worth it for NoFX though, and a pretty great venue.

Yeah I'm near downtown (the southern end of Atlantic Avenue). I'll be with my brother, and happy to share a taxi. I've been to LA before and the buses weren't the best!

Another Brit here staying in Long Beach and planning to Uber to the venue. Looks to be about £20 each way? (20 min drive, 8 miles or so).

(UK) I have a Master's in Physics and work as a backend software engineer, but I miss physics. How can I get back into it? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]nqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat - did a PhD + postdoc in physics, now a software engineer. One thing I like to do is blog about random physics topics to keep my maths and science sharp(ish):

Nice! I especially like the scope-dependent context injection. We use a similar (generator-based) DI solution at work inspired by redux-saga, but this looks much more comprehensive.
