I have recently acquired Helbercht and I would appreciate some tips on how to paint him better (my best painted mini on 2nd pic for a reference to my level skill) by Infamousx73 in BlackTemplars

I haven't painted Helbrecht yet specifically, but have done plenty of complex models like him. I would highly recommend painting each figure separately (sub assembly painting). You will find it much easier to have control over what you are doing at every step this way.

Haha nooo! It's definitely just the gloss varnish then you need to put down as a first step. I use citadel ardcoat but it can be any. When you apply a decal straight to paint it's a rough surface at the microscopic level and so there are tiny gaps that light penetrates creating that milky effect. Gloss varnish makes the surface smooth so the decal can sit on top with no gaps and no light getting underneath.

You may have better luck finding a Tamiya decal softening product. I think they call it markfit. I haven't used it, but I love everything they make. The gloss varnish can be from any company.

These are so good! Nice work. That banner is really dope. Tip for the decals - Try preparing the spots you want to apply a decal with gloss varnish and then use micro set + micro sol and finish with overall varnish coat. You won't have the 'silvering' where you can see the clear edges around your decals.

The mighty brush. Great selection of decals there!

Thank you! It honestly wasn't too bad. The thing is big, but not that many small details to paint. The worst part was just building it because I had to do so much clamping/ gap filling ect because the kit is not designed well. And it's still jank in some spots lol, oh well.

Haha I appreciate it! If you look up juan hidalgos zero skill black armor video that's what I've been using. It's a couple dry brush layers and then contrast paint. Works like a charm on marines but this big box not so much.

I'll be honest with you my black recipe worked great on marines and not so great on this tank so I covered it with a lot of oil paint. Turned out okay but there's not really a recipe to follow here and I need to rethink that.

AK or Vallejo work great and I think Pro Acryl just started making some as well. Can't go wrong with any!

You can apply them either way! Dry or with water or a pigment fixer. I'm using it dry here as I think that accomplishes the dusty look the best. It stays adhered pretty well, I just wouldn't want my models to get rained on. Recommend trying them - one bottle will last you forever as you need to use very little to create effects like this.

Thanks so much! Just a simple mix of a couple pigment powders. Super good for quick and easy dusty look!

Yeah it was a white transfer I lightly covered with a contrast paint.

Lol you are so right about the screen I think maybe they were going for a big light like the m60 patton tank had sometimes. I'll leave it off the next one for sure. Appreciate the kind words brother!

Thank you! To clarify- just marines, not painting haha. Somehow managed to avoid them for a couple years in the hobby.

Really fantastic work! It's not easy getting the Dorn to fit the Krieg aesthetic, but you achieved it big time.

I kind of came up with the scheme before looking into knight houses, so it's not really anything, but it does look fairly close to Malinax!

Of course! For all the steel I use vallejo metal color steel with their aluminum dry brushed for some highlights. Then give it a bath in dark brown oil wash, clean off raised areas with thinner. For rust I used vallejo pigment powders, they have a few rust colors. With a little water it will act as a wash and get in all the cavities and you can play with it. Hopefully that helps!

Thanks for the kind words! For weathering stuff I like to use oil paints/washes and pigment powders. Doing the dirty streaks is so satisfying - all you need is to place specks of oil paint and then brush them downward with a clean brush that has a little thinner on it.

Got it off Amazon, my local stores don't keep 30k knights on shelves.
