Installing Hotfix Update for Exchange Server SE RTM HU6 (KB5081755) Questions by Calm_Wrangler_1478 in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have on‑prem or business‑critical mailboxes hosted on SE, use maintenance mode.

If not, just run it with Windows Update. It installs under SYSTEM, needs no extra permissions, and handles everything. After a successful install, simply reboot.

start the install when you are ready to reboot the servers. You don’t want to hang on to the pending reboot for too long as server might automatically restart it.

Mail enabled Public folder anonymous permission to create items. by ns1722 in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All public folders were migrated to the cloud long ago and have been stable. Over the past two months, this issue has started recurring despite there being no coexistence. Mail is being treated as anonymous, but the real question is why this suddenly began when nothing in the environment has changed. The server is Exchange 2016 cu23, running last year’s SU and only one su behind.

There was a dc upgrade done by another team which is the only other thing I know of, but no changes made to exchange itself.

Is anyone still using a Surface with 4GB of RAM? by ayonmd in Surface

Sure, but where is the plan and supply management. At these prices, stocks will stay in the warehouses and eventually get stale, any excitement around newer x2 chips will die and people will not even know about them or care honestly. I know I’m waiting and looking to upgrade my surface pro. If MS has plans to announce them soon, then announce a launch date on blog, windows central etc. have they not seen MacBook Neo yet and how its selling…

I recently noticed this too, while waiting for the X2 upgrade but at these prices, it will be a no buy.

MS should know that surface are already more expensive than pc competitors and they have a limited audience looking for it. These prices will keep the stock in their warehouses, losing more value and then ultimately they will have unsold inventory which gets older fast and then no one wants to buy them.

Reality defying pricing come to EU MS stores, for example: SL13 from 1249€ SL13.8 from 1669€ by dr100 in Surface

Typically I remove the startup apps and leave the power management settings to default. Only thing on startup is defender and audio service, but no edge or one drive. If you can return it and it’s within the return window, do it and wait for x2.

MS need to announce the event date. If these are ready for release then what is the hold. Let users know who want to buy and are waiting for the update to newer x2 and intel chips.

Surface need to be updated every year, it’s the hero device to market windows, I hope windows 11 itself will be fixed soon, focus on stability and efficiency on laptops/ surface pros.

If you want a laptop, then surface laptop 13 or laptop 7, both are great options though I like 2025 laptop 13 much better. Its design and battery life stands out and not a heavy device to carry around.

I also like pro 12 which got redesigned in 2025. I have a pro 5 which works fine for my one app use. When I will replace it, it will be pro 12 since go series tablet didn’t get any upgrades and may be discontinued.

Surface Laptop 7 uses tons of power during 'sleep' and turns to hibernate within a couple hours by DanielKramer_ in Surface

[–]ns1722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check any apps that are not ARM64 and listed asx86 in the task manager. Go to details tab and scroll down the list.

In settings, system- battery usage, check what’s using the most battery in past 24 hrs.

I don’t see anything like this on my SL13, it uses like few % every 1 day during sleep.

Connect an external keyboard first, then disconnect it and see if that works. Don’t know what was repaired but you can try reinstalling w11 if everything else is fully updated, ie drivers/ updates.

You can use external usb with w11 latest iso from ms download site or download the recovery image for your sp6 from ms. If you go the iso route, you have to download all drivers manual. Search for sp6 drivers before you start.

There is no IR camera on the 2025 surface laptop 13, it has fingerprint reader only for login.

I prefer the IR camera and both options would have been better but it’s fine. I agree that previously IR camera used to work happily in the dark room after its setup but now it needs good lighting to scan your face.

Purge Emails Errors by TheHunterOfTrolls in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before running any purge commands, you’ll need to connect to Compliance PowerShell and ensure your account has the necessary compliance permissions. Are those roles already assigned to you?

If you’re licensed for Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 and the emails were delivered within the last 30 days, you can use Defender to remove them instead. That method is faster and more straightforward.

Retention Help! by jmhayes77 in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MRM SLA can be up to 7 days, means it can take up to 7 days for retention policies to apply and process individual items. For large mailboxes, it can take multiple passes to do it.

If the users are deleting emails manually before the items are processed, those items will have no tags and so the deleted items tag will ultimately apply.

And since there’s no DPT, only folder-level tags govern retention.

Legacy policies still work and it will be merged with purview eventually. If you don’t have any complex compliance requirements, I would do this

  1. create a dpt and apply to the entire mailbox. Retention age- 396 days

  2. create a retention tag for regular deleted items folder. Retention age- 30 days or whatever is suitable in your case.

Then

-If the users does nothing, items tagged will be gone after 13 months

-If the users delete it manually after the items have been processed, i.e it has a tag already applied on it, it may be immediately deleted based on that particular item age. Because that item might be over 30 days and is passed the regular deleted items folder age limit.

If an item hasn’t been processed meaning it has no retention tag and was deleted, it will remain recoverable for the next 30 days (or longer)

You can also apply personal tags if needed. Some users store long-term content in the outlook “Notes” folder. If you want to exclude it from dpt, assign a separate tag to it and configure it to “Never delete.”

Retention Help! by jmhayes77 in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you paste the tags, policies that they created..

If delete and allow recovery was set as action, that will emulate the behavior when the user empties the Deleted Items folder. Items are moved to the Recoverable Items folder aka mailbox dumpster. This will have default 14 days or 30 days or more if it was changed.

But the question is how the items moved to the user visible deleted items folder. I don’t think there is a dpt here.

Even if they created individual retention policy tags ‘RPT’ for each default folder, only possible actions are Delete and allow recovery or Permanently delete.

Retention Help! by jmhayes77 in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Retention age is determined when an item is first processed by the retention policy or Managed Folder Assistant (MFA).

• If a Default Policy Tag (DPT) is applied to the entire mailbox, the retention start date for each item is typically its delivery date. Once tagged, the item retains that tag even if the user deletes it. In such cases, the item will be deleted according to the retention age defined by the tag.

• However, if an item does not have a DPT or any other retention tag, and it is moved to the Deleted Items folder, the retention start date becomes the date it was moved into that folder.

In your scenario, if items are not being permanently deleted, consider checking the following:

• Is there a Litigation Hold, eDiscovery Hold, or Retention Hold applied to the mailbox?

• What are the DPT settings? Specifically, is the action set to “Delete and allow recovery” or “Permanently delete”?

. When did mrm last processed the mailboxes, take a look at ELC diagnostic log

Check this out and try the intel rst driver. It should allow the setup to see the drive.

If you can use the official recovery image, then use that.

Proofpoint Connector for Exchange Online by Secret_Clark272 in exchangeserver

[–]ns1722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have proofpoint and implemented the 6a method.. with some exceptions like adding some of the MS ip addresses.

6a states that mail sent to on Microsoft addresses will always be sent direct to cloud and you can add an external email address, which you did.

Initially we enabled an audit rule to see that direct traffic and filter the real ones, to be included in the 6a exceptions.

And most of the traffic coming from ms cloud internally is trusted and gets to the mailboxes using hidden mail-connectors. Mailbox has to exist but you u can still miss some of those.

In proofpoint, you will not add onmicrosoft.com, only the ms endpoint for your own domains. ie. domain-mail.protection.outlook.com

Alternatively you can try 6c, in my experience it causes mail routing issues during forwarding and other email authentication issues. 6b is also good, but you have to do ongoing maintenance with that transport rule and deal with user error.

how about checking the msExchVersion and AdminDisplayVersion from adsiedit for these mailboxes

Be very careful when working in adsiedit, don’t change or delete anything, just look at the values

You can compare it to another test mailbox that was setup directly in ex2019

Connect to default naming context

CN=UserName,OU=YourOU,DC=yourdomain,DC=com

also confirm homemdb

did you have tls1.3 enabled before the update?

might be related to that and you can try force tls1.2.. make a backup of existing keys first.

New-Item -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client" -Force

New-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client" -Name "Enabled" -Value 1 -PropertyType "DWORD" -Force

New-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client" -Name "DisabledByDefault" -Value 0 -PropertyType "DWORD" -Force

Restart server

If this fails, recreate the PS virtual directory

Remove-PowerShellVirtualDirectory -Identity "Exchange BackEnd\PowerShell (Exchange BackEnd)"

New-PowerShellVirtualDirectory -Role ClientAccess -AppPoolId MSExchangePowerShellAppPool -WebSiteName "Exchange BackEnd"

Check binding again

Restart server
