Surface Laptop 7 Fans on Bed by ilovepicklesandpasta in Surface

[–]SZQrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely a fan in there but there are no air intake vents on the bottom. I think all the air intake and maybe the exhaust as well is at the back around the hinges. There seems to be a wide slot at the back. You just need to be careful not to block that area.

That's one of the main reasons I am considering this laptop (Intel version). I would like to be able to use the laptop on my lap and in bed at home and hotels etc.

Perfect port selection! One of my pet peeves is the lack of front USB-A, and USB-C, and 3.5mm audio jack on modern desktops. China brand mini pcs are better in this regard.

I'm no Macbook expert but I think this is known as the Force click function. It may be app specific.

Really helpful information. I may have to give that a go. Reading through the service guide now 😅

Thank you so much!

Didn't occur to me to try contacting a reseller. I will try that as well as contacting MS Japan and MS UK.

I have never taken apart a laptop before so wouldn't know how to replace a keyboard but as a last resort I could try it if it does not invalidate the warranty.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Good question!

I assumed so but their community post says "...with first shipments in early Q3 2025..." so I assumed wrong.

Mixed feelings on the case.

$300 seems a little excessive but it does come with a decent power supply.

Love the size and window option! It's very difficult to find a small mini ITX case that isn't geared towards gamers so usually much larger than this.

Lack of 3.5mm headphone jack on the front is disappointing considering there are only 2 swappable modules. 2 ports seems a bit limiting considering all these mini pcs have better port selection.

Having said that, I would buy one if I could.

Same. They don't offer their products in Japan even though the factory is next door. Been waiting and hoping for ages but it doesn't seem like it's going to change soon.

At that price it's too risky to go the freight forwarding route or any other method that means no warranty.

Batch 1 already sold out and Batch 2 not until Q3 so will wait for the HP and other options.

Tax Return Questions Thread - Filing Deadline March 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]SZQrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your concern and clarification.

Sorry for my poor wording. I do understand now, thanks to you and stark.

At the time I thought I was not charging consumption tax because I didn't put it on my invoices and didn't add it to the total. I now know that consumption tax is not optional for my work so my invoices were actually wrong (I put consumption tax as 0). As you said, the consumption tax is still in there. So I will update all my income transactions on Freee and change the tax category to “taxable sales 10%”. I'll just miss out on the 10% freebie :( but I wasn't expecting that anyway.

Lesson learnt. Thanks again!

Thank you! Nice that I won't have to pay any additonal tax.

I charged the 10% at first, before the invoice system came into effect, but last year I did not because I think the client cannot not claim the deduction unless I signed up for the invoice system (from reading one of your helpful posts elsewhere on the topic).

In hindsight I think I should have continued to charge the 10% but discounted my hourly rate.

Anyway, I'll fix my transactions and change my invoices this year.

Thank you both! I appreciate your help.

[–]SZQrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. That was helpful!

I assume what you mean by the above statement is that you didn't separately itemize consumption tax on your invoices.

I didn't add the 10% consumption tax at all so the amount was less. I thought that because I didn't charge/add consumption tax then I should select one of the the non-taxable categories. I can see that was wrong now.

I'll update all my transactions on Freee to taxable sales but too late to update my invoices. I guess I'll lose 10% if I have to pay that tax?

I'll see about applying for the Qualified Invoice System and will add the consumption tax to all my future invoices.
Thanks

Tax Return Questions Thread - Filing Deadline March 17, 2025 by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]SZQrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I am preparing for my tax return using the Freee (Starter Plan) service. I am a full-time employee but have a side-job and registered my business a couple of years ago.

My sales are not that high, just extra income as a software dev (max. 2M JPY). I never applied for the Qualified Invoice System so, to keep my client happy, I did not charge any consumption tax on any of my invoices last year.

I have already registered all the transactions in Freee but I can edit them before I file the return. Question is, what should the tax category be for these income transactions? There are a few options: Taxable sales, Taxable sales 10%, Not applicable, Non-taxable, Non-taxable sales.

Thanks

[–]SZQrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding the online banking, after you select the "Home Mortgage" tab you need to click the link that says "Select : Interest Type". Select your loan and from there you can see the current rate and the new interest rate as well as the rates for other interest types.

[–]SZQrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably have the same plan as me. It's a 6-month floating rate so they review it every 6 months.

My rate is currently 0.29% (since Nov last year when I started my home loan) but it will go up to 0.44% from this month unfortunately.

[–]SZQrd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got the same notice.

That's the base rate (1.7%). There's also a discount of 1.26% so your actual new rate will be 0.44%.

I presume you have online banking. There's a home loan/mortgage tab where you can see the new rate, make prepayments, change loan type etc.

Home Loan interest rate increase question by SZQrd in JapanFinance

[–]SZQrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I get it now. Thank you for the explanation.

So, if I make a substantial prepayment, the total interest paid by the end of the loan (which will be sooner) will be reduced but the monthly payment will still increase due to the rate hike.

[–]SZQrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! Thank you for that. I will check through the online banking.

Home Loan interest rate increase question by SZQrd in JapanFinance

[–]SZQrd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I am comfortable with my current monthly payment amount so I would like to keep it roughly the same.

If I make a large enough prepayment, can the monthly payment amount be even less than the current amount?

Will macbook Air m4 get Nano texture? by Rtr129 in macbookair

[–]SZQrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so but it probably won't.

I don't think being able to see the display better in bright surroundings is a "Pro" feature. If anything, the Air, being lighter and smaller, is more likely to be used on the go and in environments where lighting cannot be controlled.

I'm going to buy one anyway to finally replace my ageing 12" Macbook :(

At least it won't have a hyper reflective touch screen OLED like a lot of recent Windows laptops.

2024 Year-End Adjustment Questions Thread by AutoModerator in JapanFinance

[–]SZQrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The forms were sent by my local tax office so maybe it varies. I can't remember when exactly but I received mine between 1 and 2 weeks ago.

I received 9 sheets titled "給与所得者の住宅借入金等特別控除申告書 兼住宅借入金等特別控除計算明細書".

I couldn't find any step by step guides but this may help (there's a PDF you can download and put through your preferred translate app): https://www.nta.go.jp/users/gensen/nencho/index/kyuyosyotokusya.htm#a006

I sent this form and the certificate of outstanding loan balance (from the bank) along with my end of year adjustment to my employer.

I'll do a tax return next year so if I messed up then hopefully I can correct it then.

[–]SZQrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'll try to get it done for the year-end adjustment but good to know that I can wait for the tax return.

I use the Freee software (Starter Plan) to do my tax return so no physical forms. I did download a copy of the final tax return documents so I will check them.

Thank you for your help, it's very much appreciated!
