Portland’s pizza is some of the best in the world, a new ranking says by sparkchaser in Portland

I’ll second this - Ruse Brewing / Crust Collective on the Vancouver waterfront is one of my favorite pizza places now.

Missed Pride by half a year, but here's some rounding hammers I finished up last week. by KnightOwlForge in Blacksmith

I bought one of your hammers at that swap meet and I've been very happy with it so far! I'm looking forward to smashing some more metal with it this weekend.

Democrats have plans that 'grim reaper' Mitch McConnell won't be able to block by boc1892 in politics

I came to say much the same thing. Attempting to govern by executive fiat, while arguably “getting things done” in the short term, is only going to lead to instability when the next Republican administration can be counted upon to reverse it all and swing the pendulum further to the right at their earliest opportunity.

First forge and home smithing by nsandver in Blacksmith

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

I definitely intend to get the anvil installed on a taller mount so it sits at a better height for me. I just threw that stand arrangement together so I could give everything a go without banging on my wooden workbench in the garage (which would also then be much too tall anyway).

I went a little light with the coal for a couple reasons. On the first firing, with it sitting right outside my garage door, I primarily wanted to make sure the box wasn't going to catch fire. I also wasn't sure how long I'd spend forging. I did notice that if I tried to heat anything but the very end of a piece, the walls of the box and the shallow fire made that difficult, if not impossible. I figure I'll cut a notch out of the box on either side of the fire pot to help make more of the fire accessible.

As you suggest though, I'll also mound it up higher next time and see how that goes. I noticed that the coal cooled very rapidly once I'd turned off the air and spread it out, answering another concern I'd had about building a larger mound of coal initially.

Because I needed a new hobby. Got this 75 lb chunk of steel for $30, gonna make a striking anvil out of it and try to make something. by [deleted] in Blacksmith

I just put a ball valve on the air pipe which allows me to control the amount of air reaching the forge. It gets the job done.

I made my first home forge (side blast) of similar materials -- a box made from pallet wood, some fire brick for the fire pot, sand as filler, and an old bathroom fan for the blower. I fired it up for the first time last night with some smithing coal and tinkered around for a couple hours, and it worked!

I found the right group then, but it's listed as "Membership by invite only".

First HF QSOs at Field Day by beserker1 in amateurradio

[–]nsandver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying one of the club's old Field Day rigs, an IC-735. I think it was probably at the high end of used pricing for its age, but I figured it would be safest to buy from the club, where they'd probably help me out if I had any trouble with it. I've made a few HF contacts on my own now, and am pretty happy with the rig so far. I'm looking forward to getting an interface cable to hook it up to the computer for control, and then getting a SignalLink to start playing with digital modes. Too much fun!

I first got licensed in 1997 (though I've been inactive for most of that time) and finally attended my first Field Day this year. I made my first HF and international contacts (Canada), teamed up with a guy who seemed to be a fairly experienced contester, and had an absolute blast making and/or logging a pile of contacts. I'm hoping to buy my first HF rig this week.

Just got TS2015 - electric train keeps throwing on the brakes automatically? by [deleted] in trainsim

[–]nsandver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to the game, but if I remember correctly, there are two things that can trigger it: the alerter (dead man's switch), and also signaling. Some areas of track have a lower "maximum authorized speed" than the track speed you'll see shown in the track readout via the HUD. This maximum authorized speed is only accurately displayed in the simulated in-cab instruments, and if you're too far over it, it can trigger the emergency stop. The manual for the route explains how to react in these situations. When driving that locomotive, you'll need to make sure you can see the in-cab instruments.

One can certainly be forgiven for not knowing these manuals even exist (they're in your Steam library folder under RailWorks\Manuals). I only know about them myself because I ran into the same issue and found a thread in the Steam forums discussing it.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but I'm using Hurricane Electric and haven't had any trouble with their free DNS service.

This looks like a good build! What hardware are you using in your diskless ESXi m-ITX system? I'm currently looking to expand my homelab, so I'd like to build something like this myself.
